Anyone still out there?!

ALice You do need most of the sports kit I'm afraid. My DS has two pairs of rugby shorts, and uses the white ones for gym rather than having the extra pair. Similarly he has one pair of trainers with non-marking soles which he uses for all sport not requiring boots. He has one pair of (cheap) football boots which he has been using for football and rugby. He will need both tops, two pairs of shorts, rugby socks, white socks, and swimming trunks. They do all seem to have the locker bags - TBH they need something to put their kit in and they seem very practical and reasonably strong too. The only thing I may be tempted to skip at first if your DS is really not sporty is the tracksuit. I think my Ds has only used his for travelling to rugby matches - they always take uniform to change into to travel home Confused At least have a look at the second hand sales before buying new!!
For anyone already made up their minds T second hand uniform sale Saturday 15th March 8.30 - 11.30!!

Seeline · 22/02/2014 10:25

Oh I wouldn't bother with the base layer either unless sporty (in which case he may already have one - they don't seem too fussy about colours as long as reasonably unobtrusive!!)

LadyMuck · 22/02/2014 10:26

And don't bother with a coat until you can be certain that they will wear it. Basically wait until they beg you.

LM I was expecting this but surprisingly, a large number of boys at T DO seem to wear coats of some description!
A lot of the boys seem to prefer High Street jumpers rather than the school ones - less bulky I think.

LadyMuck · 22/02/2014 10:38

Personally I'd still wait though... For whatever reason it seems easier to get a child into a black superdry coat than one of the standard school coats. And in fairness he won't need it for the first few weeks, after which time you can work out what his peergroup might be doing...ditto phone if you have a basic option.

I think that this is the earliest point at which uniform buying has been discussed on these now annual threads! It sounds as if lots of posters have made up their mind already. Are many still waiting for grammars, or is everything done and dusted? I know MoS is. Anyone else?

pooziepuzzle · 22/02/2014 10:44

On a financial basis waiting to see what the grammars bring but heart with W.

carribeanqueen · 22/02/2014 11:06

Ladymuck When did the W fee started to include the Lake Garda trip I recall Paying £90 for the trip back in 2011 is this a new thing

carribeanqueen · 22/02/2014 11:20

Confused sorry it was 2012

basildonbond · 22/02/2014 11:35

Lake Garda included in 2007..

Croydonmumtods · 22/02/2014 11:40

carribeanqueen cost about that last year as well but to cover food and incidentals as far as I remember not the actual cost of travel and accommodation which is free.
Second hand uniform sale in w is great with real bargains. I bought some new some second hand. Ds wears jumper but has no intention of ever wearing coat so next year there will be a brand new unworn coat in the second hand sale. Uniform price list is on website facilities - shop - download PDF but you don't need all of this probably less then half and m&s black trousers are fine.

carribeanqueen · 22/02/2014 11:42

Thanks Basildonbond

carribeanqueen · 22/02/2014 12:05

Croydonmumtods thanks for clarifying.
Re-schooluniform no need for separate boots for rugby and football my son use same boot for both the optimum brand from the W school shop are a very good value

burntoutdad · 22/02/2014 13:23

Carribeanqueen - footbal and rugby boots have different studs for a number of reasons. So one boot with interchangeable studs is possible but Wearing football studs or blades for rugby is very dangerous and rugby studs for football also.

carribeanqueen · 22/02/2014 13:32

Burntoutdad you are perfectly correct regards the safety issue with the studs the boots are interchangeable but my son just use the rugby studs for football

burntoutdad · 22/02/2014 16:18

Fair enough caribeanqueen! Although might be worth noting that they can hurt themselves playing football with rugby studs too as they are longer than football studs and can get caught.

Hello, thanks to everybody for all the information on W and T, has been a great help to us! Could someone clarify how afternoons in Y6/7/8 would probably look like at W.

Do boys attend many sports and extra-c clubs after school or are they mostly offered at lunchtime? Do many of your DSs do clubs other than sports?

Appreciate your help!

havinganightmare · 23/02/2014 09:28

Clubs are lunchtime and after school. If you look on the website you see the calendar which will give you a flavour of the gazzilion things on offer. I think the sports have their own page to the extra curricular clubs. In year 6/7 they have extended lunch break but from year 8 they have to juggle eating to get the lunchtime ones in- but still manage it usually with a packed lunch for the sports ones. They overdo initially and then work out that some lunchtimes/after schools sessions are useful for homework!
School like them to balance the extras between sports and academic/fun clubs but the reality is that if they do football/rugby/cricket there may not be enough time for DT/camera club/robotics etc. mine just does sports now and the occasional science club if he can get there. They can also swim at lunchtime and use the gym (which they love for about 3 weeks and go every day!). The extras programme is phenomenal at W and I believe at most of these excellent schools. Lucky boys Envy

misu · 23/02/2014 11:33

Thanks, that helps a lot. Will have another look at the calendar.

pooziepuzzle · 24/02/2014 07:50

Does anyone know if Whitgift boys use the tram link to East Croydon?

Croydonmumtods · 24/02/2014 07:57

poozie tram is about a mile away from the school so not really used but most of the boys go to south Croydon station and walk from there which is about a 5 min walk. Every am and pm loads of children of all ages take this route and I know some would be going to similar areas to you.

pooziepuzzle · 24/02/2014 08:04

Can you get train from East to South Croydon?

Hipster1 · 24/02/2014 08:06

Yes you can. It takes about 3 mins.

Seeline · 24/02/2014 08:13

There are also several buses that go from East Croydon to W itself. (466 springs to mind).

pooziepuzzle · 24/02/2014 08:15

Thanks all!!

I've booked in to visit Dulwich College and Alleyn's this week in order to help DH and I decide which to choose for DS. Not sure whether to take DS or not....

We are still unsure which to choose, did anyone find they found some clarity on visiting after offer day? Anyone have any questions they would ask in the same situation? I am going to ask about bullying, falling behind with work, Y7 jitters, etc....
