Anyone still out there?!

OP posts:
Myriam35690 · 28/02/2014 17:32

Grammars results will be out on Monday - good luck to all DPs that are waiting on these results. For those of you that are familiar with the National Offer Day process, could you please clarify how it works? Do DPs that submitted their CAFs online get notified automatically by email or are the offers all sent in the post?

MrsSteptoe... if this is of any consolation - we are also torn. Facing the prospect of an agonizing choice if DS goes is offered a grammar place. DS and I fell in love with Whitgift but DH is not convinced that the scholarship is enough to turn down a free grammar place... aagh!

pooziepuzzle · 28/02/2014 18:13

If you applied online you will be sent an e-mail on Monday from about 5pm. Postal applications will have to wait for the post to arrive hopefully the next day!

Myriam35690 · 28/02/2014 19:06

Thank you, Pooziepuzzle. Good to know it won't be before the end of the working day else I would have found myself clicking refresh on my inbox all day long!

It's one of those nights/mornings, waking up at that stupid hour. I am at the beginning of my journey, I still have another 1.5years before I go through what you guys are going through.

Having read about culling, if my DS is now not very academic, he's hovering average, probably more near top than bottom, should I tutor him to get into W or T and later get culled as he was the one that got tutored, will probably need tutoring throughout as he's so not into homework. I was wondering, are your DSs one of the top 5 or 10 in your prep for them to get offered a place? However, he loves his music on 2 instruments, but only on Grade 1 now, means I gave to push him to do 2 grades next year!

I keep reading, what is the big deal about music/art scholarships? Just for a fee remisision? It seems music/art is not a very highly paid profession, unless you are really really good . How does that help you get into university to do say accounting or medicine if you are good at music but not academic? Sorry, am I contradicting myself(why would a non-academic child be doing those subjects).

I did have my heart on a state school for him, no stress and he can do it in his own pace, no peer pressure, but I'm worried about the type of kids he will meet as he is easily influenced/attracted to trouble!! But feel bad as I will be sending my DD to a private as she got an excellent academic scholarship offer. Best I've heard!

basildonbond · 01/03/2014 08:37

Eek we have decided! Dd off to Alleyn's in September - feel relieved to have made the decision (but do still have to send form back ..)

Happy decision-making vibes to everyone still dithering Grin

Mummytummy, sorry to read about your woes. IMO, it is way too early to predict where a child will be in 10 years time, now. All we can do is guide them the best we can and provide them with the best education we can. Even the very clever DC, mostly get tutored, you are helping your DC. It's also about learning exam techniques. Also sometimes they need to be in the right environment to bring the best out of them. Everyone has a gift, and hopefully with the right schooling environment they discover it, some early, some a bit later. With giving your DS the best opportunities you can, I'm sure he will do very well and you will look back and wonder why you were so stressed about it, when he was only young.

I honestly, don't worry too much about culling, we know it goes on everywhere ( generally speaking), even in some state schools, again it is about engaging the school and making sure your DS, doesn't get lost in the system. If he needs help as GCSEs draw near, then you will do what you have to do when/if that time comes, but chances are, in the right school for him, he will be fine and not need extra help. I think it is more difficult when you have children and one is very academic and one isn't, you compare them ( subconsciously), but each will develop at their own pace.

One of my work colleagues has 2 children and her DS was the same and is now a doctor in surgical training. Her DD, was the very academic one and she continued to do very well and she is an accountant.

Again IMO, art/ music scholarships are just as fantastic ( apart from the fees remission), the schools give extra attention to their scholars ( and others who do well in these fields), and they get exposure and experiences they wouldn't otherwise get, which will stay with them for life and may open doors for them in future which they wouldn't ordinarily have.

Well done to your DD. And all the best with your DS.

MrsSteptoe · 01/03/2014 11:13

Mummytummy, I thought I would stop worrying around now: alas, no. Getting offers has made DS more miserable than exams because he's absolutely at a standstill with the fear of making a mistake when he chooses; I think I will spend the next seven years worrying about fees and anything else my mind drifts towards. We are a family of worriers.

However, on the culling thing, far wiser minds than mine have said (and I find this very plausible) that once they're in, it's all about engagement and application - a belief underpinned by the fact that two of the three schools we visited post-offer were very clear that being chucked out after GCSE was (a) usually somewhat self-inflicted, and (b) rare!

Personally, because I know that I WILL just look for things to worry about and it can get quite irrational, I've decided culling can wait as a focus for my fretting until he approaches the next natural departure point, which would be 13. If DS seems to be struggling, I will move him then to a gentler academic environment. But really, I don't think it'll be necessary - by and large, I think we can probably trust the admissions process to get it right by picking the right children for the school.

Marmitelover55 · 01/03/2014 17:31

My DN was culled from one of the schools mentioned on this thread. I think it was an awful experience that the family weren't prepared for at all. It was tricky to find a place at another sixth form so close to the start of term.

pooziepuzzle · 01/03/2014 18:41

I have heard of two people receiving offers from Wandsworth today so it appears some have leaked early which must be huge error

pooziepuzzle · 01/03/2014 18:50

Actually just heard of another one do make that 3!

AliceLostinWonderland · 01/03/2014 21:37

Poozie, how is that possible that some parents hear of the offers and others don't. We live in Wandsworth and we have not heard anything?

Truda11 · 01/03/2014 22:15

Poozie, have you heard from W regarding bursary yet? We are still hoping... wishing...dreaming of a affordable outcome.

pooziepuzzle · 01/03/2014 22:20

I don't know Aliceinwonderland, these 3 offers have been via post which should not arrive until Tuesday earliest. I was sceptical when heard of the first one but now heard of three. It is very very odd.

pooziepuzzle · 01/03/2014 22:23

Truda11, had some discussion with W and like you hoping for a miracle but time is running out........ Have you been back in touch with them or them with you?

pooziepuzzle · 01/03/2014 22:52

Has anyone heard of anyone being successful in gaining either a bursary or scholarship award after offer day due to being reconsidered?

AliceLostinWonderland · 03/03/2014 05:16

Where is everyone? We won't know until 5pm!

MotherOfSuburbia · 03/03/2014 06:16

Decisions day.... We also won't hear until after 5 today and then we'll need to finally make up our minds. eek!

Stressedbutblessed · 03/03/2014 06:59

Good Luck everyone - thinking of you all today

pooziepuzzle · 03/03/2014 07:13

Good luck all! It's going to be a long day......

AliceLostinWonderland · 03/03/2014 08:03

Trying very hard to keep myself busy but mind keeps on drifting to what destiny would offer!

MrsSteptoe · 03/03/2014 09:14

Good luck, all. We too won't get ours till early evening, and we'd have to have a major change of heart to turn from the indie we're leaning towards, but I'm still going to be thinking about it all day!

bananadrama · 03/03/2014 09:34

All the best for those hoping for grammar places today, so wish we didn't have to wait all day!

ladydepp · 03/03/2014 09:46

We are not waiting any grammar news, but I feel for all of you. Best of luck and hope the day does not drag on too long.

We have chosen Dulwich College for DS, I hope we have made the right decision. He seems happy, I feel slightly sick.....but I think I would feel that way no matter which school we chose. It feels strange to turn down a great school like Whitgift or Alleyn's but he can only go to one school...Smile

JustAnotherUserName · 03/03/2014 10:04

Well done, Lady D. DC is great (and was always our first choice)..... DS really excited about it but not as much as us.

LostinLondon · 03/03/2014 10:22

We're turning down DC and accepting W today. Strangely nervous about doing so as it was a tough decision, especially as DS1 already at DC, but hard to turn down sports scholarship from W.
Good luck to everyone hoping for state options. We got our state offer via post on Saturday - shocked to get it so early.
