Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

GORGEOUSX · 28/02/2011 11:35
Wine

Tom o orrow, Tom o o rrow, I Lo o v e You TomOrrow, You're o only a day a a WAY....

weblette · 28/02/2011 11:42

Tomorrow afternoon for us. We're Bucks so because we had a successful 11+ appeal she should get her first choice - the catchment single sex grammar. Bit nervy for some of her friends though, in catchment but the school usually only takes to 6-7 miles out and the number of first preferences is already over the PAN.

crazymum53 · 28/02/2011 11:43

Our LEA have obviously listened to parents (for once) and are now sending out allocation emails as well as letters tomorrow. So the wait will be shorter than I first thought - so definitely need Wine now!

jodee · 28/02/2011 11:44

Cheers Gorgeousx, is that your first glass, that singing sounds slightly sloshy and slurred!!! Wink

GORGEOUSX · 28/02/2011 11:46

LOL! No, can't use that as an excuse - I'm just an appalling singer Grin

bigTillyMint · 28/02/2011 12:17

Got my fingers crossed for you all - I went through this last year.

Ingles2 · 28/02/2011 12:25

Hi all...
Have been totally ignoring this and have taken a head in the sand attitude. But all of a sudden I'm feeling all sick to the stomach.
We'll be getting the 4pm email tomorrow. Ds1 is hoping for 1st choice grammar, I'm nervous as we're furthest possible distance and his friend in the village already has a sibling there.
I think we might get 2nd choice grammar which is a super selective and ds will be going alone,...he won't be happy.
We'll probably get the comp.
I just want it to be ovvveeerrrrrrr.

DayDreamingDaisy · 28/02/2011 12:34

This is our first time at this and I was perfectly calm until the thought entered my head last week that my DS1 is actually going to Secondary School in September!
We do not have grammer schools in this area and have put down a CE school as our only choice..... beginning to regret that now!
Although we applied online it doesn't mention anything other than letters will be posted out on 1st March so I assume we will play the waiting game til the letter arrives.
Good luck everyone, hope no-one is disappointed with the school allocated to their DC's.

recycledteen · 28/02/2011 12:41

Our kids' primary school was the last choice for most parents in our town. We were new to the area and didn't know. Blessing in disguise. Huge school building built to hold 1400 pupils, we'd small school roll of 400, best of equipment courtesy of eligible area including a 'deprived' estate - loads of help in the form of grants, plus teachers who stayed locally and had attended the school themselves. Cared about the pupils and head teacher, easily accessible. Local comprehensive similar.

Perhaps we were just lucky. Both self and DH went to private schools. Not a happy experience. Comparing the standard of care and classroom education with our kids schools, I'd choose local over private any time.

swanriver · 28/02/2011 12:44

feeling all nervous, so thought I'd check I could still login to online site - of course I'd forgotten my password [panic] They've sent me a new one, with a vegetable in it Grin

Perhaps I should plan some sort of celebration tea for ds1 whatever school he gets into, and that would make waiting less irksome tomorrow. 5 pm is the time of notification here in West London!

CointreauVersial · 28/02/2011 12:45

I am starting to REALLY TWITCH now. Just mentioned it to my colleagues, and found out there are three of us all in the same boat. So we just had a mutual panic session.

Just like you, Daisy, getting the letter will really bring it home to me that my ickle boy will be off to senior school.

But which one??? Aargh!

CointreauVersial · 28/02/2011 12:47

Oooh, Discussion of the Day!!

You betcha!

pot39 · 28/02/2011 12:58

Madame Cholet
This has a happy ending
Our fantastically kind, cheerful and wonderful first son was in the horrid and unenviable situation of not getting a place 4 years ago, despite us putting down 6 local schools (7 actually)and him getting 97% in the Wandsworth Test.
When pre-children we bought our lovely home secondary school catchment areas weren't on our radar. Ten years later we certainly weren't prepared to cheat another child of their rightful place by moving temporarily to a 'catchment' address.
So from 1st March we got on the phone on a daily basis and in the end on about 21st March the local authority called us to say how pleased they were that they could offer our son a place at his 3rd choice (our 1st choice school).
My son has thrived academically and emotionally at this local school and his brother can't wait to start there in September (luckily this being a bog standard Comp (how I HATE that phrase) it has a sibling policy).
Not getting in on the first day isn't that unusual and gets sorted pretty quickly, with support from family and friends a child will get through it and by September it'll be forgotten as they look forward to starting at the new school.

CupAndSaucer · 28/02/2011 13:00

Only 28 hours to go! Shock
Have so far managed not to mention it to the DC. Bet I'll crack tonight! And I bet it's the hot topic at school anyway Grin

EllenJane1 · 28/02/2011 13:06

Oh my God. All the letters have come a day early in Gloucestershire, due to them using second class and having to post them out earlier! My DS2 has got his first choice so pretty happy here! Grin Grin

CupAndSaucer · 28/02/2011 13:07

Interesting post pot39.

Those of you who don't get your first choice, will you be accepting the place you're allocated, or will you be doing as pot39 did and hoping for some movement in the allocations?

i always said I'd accept whatever was offered as I'd be happy with any of our three choices - but now the time is almost here I'm changing my mind! But I don't know if DC will find it too unsettling to keep trying for a different place - especially when classmates will probably all know where they're going.

urrghhh....the next 28hours are going to pass so sloooooowly!

CupAndSaucer · 28/02/2011 13:07

Yay....great news EllenJane! You can relax now - and celebrate!

CointreauVersial · 28/02/2011 13:10

CupAndSaucer - AFAIK you can accept the place you are given, but still be on the waiting list/appeal for the ones higher on your list.

Sportsmum · 28/02/2011 13:11

Good luck to all of you waiting to find out about school places - will be thinking of you. xx

mummytime · 28/02/2011 13:11

Walked past a group of year 6's today, and they were all discussing school choices. The ones going private know now, so its just the others waiting.

Don't panic. I got my 3rd choice with DC1, just after 1/2 term in the summer we were then offered our 1st choice, a bog standard comp which is wonderful.
There will be some movement.

But good luck all of you!

EllenJane1 · 28/02/2011 13:12

Thanks CupandSaucer. Hope you all get what you wanted, or at least what you'll settle for. Hoping I don't sound smug at finding out early.Blush

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2011 13:12

Very pleased for you EllenJane :)

miniwedge · 28/02/2011 13:19

Depends cupandsaucer - we are waiting on 11+ as well as non-selective so if dd doesn't get offered a grammar place straight away she then goes onto the waiting list and offers are sent according to your ranking.

In Essex there is loads of movement in the grammar school offers as parents also apply for indies and other grammars.

Even so, dd will be very very lucky if she gets a grammar school place as there are so few places available.

I am hoping she gets the RC comp in the event of her not getting into grammar as it is a lovely school but she is more likely to get our 4th choice of a comp on the other side of town which has no sixth form provision. Hmm

CupAndSaucer · 28/02/2011 13:25

Sorry CointreauVersial, I meant 'accepting' as in 'settling for' - I didn't make myself very clear.

I'll definitely be accepting whatever we're offered - just deciding whether or not I'd settle for 2nd or 3rd choices, or wheher I'd want to go on waiting lists and hope a place came up.

At the moment I feel like I'd be very happy with 1st or 2nd choice - but if it's 3rd choice I may just go on a waiting list Blush
