Its kinda the same but not!
You fill in the CAF with four choices and they can be a mix of grammar and non-selective, the CAF has to be in at the end of October.
You take the 11+ at the end of November.
You then get the allocation from Essex CC from 00.01am on the 1st March, the results for the 11+ are emailed from 5pm on the 1st March.
So, you will know what school has been allocated before you know the 11+ results.
Your results give you a ranking for each grammar you put on your CAF which is basically your marks compared to everyone else who took the test and chose that school.
So if you applied for Southend and are ranked 115 you would have a place.
But you could be ranked 210 for Chelmsford grammar and not offered a place.
However..... if you put Chelmsford down first you would go on the waiting list for Chelmsford and you would then move up the rankings according to how many offered places accept or decline.
In the meantime you would accept Southend. This has an effect on Southend wait list as well.
So.... you could get a letter in August telling you that you are now offered a place at Chelmsford...
Its a really shite system, Kent is better I think. You get the results before the CAF goes inso you know whether or not it is worth applying to grammar schools.
With Essex you can essentially be wasting choices on your CAF if you see what I mean.
