who have your school employes to cover ppa time

ok for htose of you who dont knwo teachers now have half and ady per week (!) to do planning preparationa and assessment

in that time your kid will be taught by someone else.

a lot of schools have recruited trained teachers for it BUT a lot of schools are doing it ont he cheap and using tas " supervised" byt he head. PSricularly on a friday after noon!!!( when kids are high as kites)

the staff do not have to remain on site at this time so there coudl be one head nad 10 odd tas.

i woudl urge you all to find out what your school has done for this time adn who is planning and supervising.

No my school or child's school, but a friend of mine (an experieneced priary school teacher) has been employed this year for 2 days a week at a local primary school to cover classes when the teachers have their PPA time.

Is the PPA time not staggered betwen teachers. I can't imagine they all get to have it at once.

Also may of the TAs (LSA, etc.) being employed are doing the high level/skills TA stuff, so not just a completely unexperienced/unqualified person.

Is the planning not still done by the class teacher, with the TA/cover just following that plan?

But I do agree - find out who is looking after your child's class. I would not be happy with no qualified memebr of staff not being around.

There's 2 part time teachers been employed for DS1's school so he'll always be taught by a teacher . They've also got an amazingly large number of TA and LSA's too!

Not sure I'd have been willing to have a week less holiday though Cod - I did enough work in my own time as it was. Think most teacher's do. The PPA is for ongoing planning and prep and marking, not something you can do in just one week all at once. Has to be some time each week. In the past teacher's did it at home or in shcool in their own time. PPA IS needed for teachers, but I agree it ought to be fully qualified members of staff doing the cover.

cod - my new job is SO easy!!! I really enjoy it, it is interesting and everything. But no stress. I only do 17.5 hours over 3 days - and that is it. Not planning and prep in my own time, no marking. I get paid almost same rate as teaching, and I get 13.5 weeks holiday WHEN I WANT IT!!! No, I am certainly not going back!

I really like the sound of your job Hula - am keeping an eye out for something along those lines (looking to return to work in a year I think).

A lot of schools are employing a specialist teachers to teach class whilst teachers are doing PPA. the TA is on hand as they will know the childrena dn can help the guset teahcer to keep the children following the rules so thir should be continuity for the children in class. I am training as a Teaching Assistant and it is made very clear on our course that we should never be left in charge of a class on out own. We should instead be supporting the relief teacher in the task. It is also how the schools are getting the specialist in for Dance, music, art, Pe in more strucutred way and have 2 class togther in the hall prehaps

Also a as school governor I have been involved in making sure that the cover is properly provided. At the nursery they use a dance specialist

at dd/ds's school PPA for KS1 teachers is covered by a HLTA, work planned by classteacher. for KS2 teachers, there are 8 of them, PPA is covered by tecaher who was in Y5 last year and isfloating this year.

where i teach (unit for asylum seekers and refugees) PPA has not been mentioned. we never have staff mettings, etc etc. we have 2 new members of staff who have asked about pPA then decided that as we finish at 3pm threy will accept that as PPA! despite the fact that we do playground duty and luchtime supervision EVERY day ( don't have luchtime sipervisors)

At DS1's first aschool, where he was until half term in June, the classroom assistant covered one day a week, which we were not happy about as they had 35 kids in the class. Don't know how they got away with it, apparently all schools in area were over subscribed. At new school, they have changed the role of the deputy head, who apparently specialises in minitoring Maths progress, from class Teacher to floating specialist- she covers the Teacher who is having their perp time.

AuntyQuated- didn't know you did that for a job- EXACTLY what I want to do! Doing my world religions degree (with global citixenship modules at suggestion of Uni) now, then a PGCE. Never met anyone else who wanted to or did work with asylum seekers- excellent!
