I recently sold an item on ebay and the buyer sent the money, and I posted the item.

Now, I did post 3 days late but I was on tour and didnt get the email with his address til I got back. I apologised to him, and explained that I was away. He seemed okay with it.

I have had about 15 emails from the buyer, claiming that he never recieved the item.
I have douvle checked the address with him. It was the right one. He has now opened a dispute on paypal and ebay about me and i dont know what to do. he is asking for POD number (?) and delivery number (again, ??)It was just a normal 'post in a jiffy bag' thing, so i didnt get anything like that?

I dont know what to do, and am worried as i have spent the money (it was nearly £200)

THis happened to me once but I had a proof of posting, did you not get one?

fireflyfairy2 · 24/03/2007 21:33

Sorry, but with something nearly £200 I would have definitely gotten a proof of postage receipt, or even paid extra for insurance.

Don't you have a receipt from the PO?

twinsetandpearls · 24/03/2007 21:34

The proof of posting is free.

BassMama · 24/03/2007 21:35

No.. really wish i had.

Basically, I had a jiffy bag and i put the things in it, and took it to the post office, they weighed it and gave me the stamps!

I took it outside and stuck it in the letterbox.

I know, I should have done some kind of recorded delivery but I thought you only had to if the buyer chose it, and it would have cost me £6.. Seems silly now, i really should have just spend the bloody £6.
So.. what now?

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 24/03/2007 21:37

sorry I don't know, it may just be taken up by ebay, maybe he has done this before and you may be vindicated.

KristinaM · 24/03/2007 21:37

sorry but I woudl complain too if I paid £200 for an item and didnt get it and teh seller had no proof of postage or anything so I coudl claim from teh royal mail

BassMama · 24/03/2007 21:41

Obviously I would complain too.. but how do I know he didnt receive it? In the same way that how does he know that i did post it? IYKWIM

I am very worried - if he has done it before then maybe i am in with a chance, but what if not?

Do they generally take buyers or sellers sides?

I cant afford to lose the item and pay him back.

always send stuff recorded now, three weeks ago, i didnt, 2 out of 3 parcels didnt arrive so i am massively out of pocket.

So now i refuse to send standard post, its recorded or nothing.

unfortantly this week i sold 3 dolls to overseas buyer. dispite me saying thats it best to take the insurence option on the overseas postage, two havent(£60 dolls). so they can go jump if they dont arrive as I am not taking responsibility for it this time, i have proof of postage, its their fault they didnt take insurence.

schnapps · 24/03/2007 21:48

I think that if you paid via paypal then they will simply take the money from your account to reimburse the buyer. This is what happened when I made a complaint to paypal over a seller.

Unless you can prove that you sent the item.

It's very infortunate for you though

sixlostmonkeys · 24/03/2007 21:49

oh no!
The recorded delivery/insurance is for the sellers benefit, not the buyers, so always get it whether the buyer asks or not.

have you actually told him that you haven't sent it by trackable means?
If you haven't then don't let on just yet. tell him you will track the item and in the meantime could he possibly check with his neighbours and his local sorting office.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed here that he just may admit to receiving it.

I'm afraid I have a bad feeling about this though. If he received it and noted that it was sent normal post he knows full well that he can now get his money back by claiming it was not received.

unfortunately you will have to refund and if he paid by paypal they will just freeze your account, and without the tracking number you will lose your case.

So sorry

schnapps · 24/03/2007 21:49

*UNfortunate

BassMama · 24/03/2007 21:51

Thanks Jules

I didn't get any proof of delivery. I realise this was silly, but its done now. Obviously next time i will get proof of delivery.

I offered 'standard postage' which i took to mean normal posting. I told him it was first class so there was never any indication that it should/would be recorded delivery.

I dont really have much feedback, I have only bought 5 things and they habe all given me positive, but have not sold before.

How can i get proof that he didnt receive it?

Have been to the post office, but they said there is no way of tracing a random parcel.

I really cannot afford to just refund him - the money has been spend on something that cannot be returned (a £2000 amp for my band that we all had to pay £400 towards) and i sold the item purely to raise this money!

I am SO worried. I dont even have the money in my bank if paypal try to take it back! (i get paid cash mainly for the gigs i do so dont really keep money in my bank account)

OP posts:
BassMama · 24/03/2007 21:55

Thanks sislost monkeys..

I have told him already. I am pretty sure he is conning me to be honest, i dont understand how it could not have arrived?

The guys in my band are all for ready to drive down to where he lives (MANY miles away) and go round his house! its all i can do to stop them... maybe i wont!

Joking obviously..

Dont know why I am joking, I am nearly in tears about this. laugh or cry i guess

OP posts:
sixlostmonkeys · 24/03/2007 22:01

I too reckon he is conning you.

as it is so much money and obviously you haven't got it I think the only thing you can do is something along the lines of closing your ebay and paypal accounts. I'm not sure how paypal would treat this. If you were to change bank accounts so that there isn't any money in the one that is connected to paypal then they wouldn't be able to withdraw....

Not the best of advice, but as I reckon he actually has the items then the karma levels aren't going to be shattered.

A lot of hassle but better than losing £200?

I've only heard similar tales from the buyers point of view who say they can't get their money back because the seller is longer a member

sixlostmonkeys · 24/03/2007 22:02

oh and, you can always sign up at ebay again using a different email address and bank details.

schnapps · 24/03/2007 22:03

Pakages often do go missing in the post. I ordered 3 books at the same time from different buyers on ebay and only 1 of them turned up! And the buyers had proof of postage, so not trying to rip me off.

BassMama · 24/03/2007 22:04

How terribly unethical!

Love it. Might have to do this.

Such a shame, its pretty much put me off ebay anyway so dont think i'd bother opening a new one.

I can just close the paypal account then? Even though I paid for something on it only today? will that still go through?

OP posts:
sixlostmonkeys · 24/03/2007 22:06

tbh I don't know the ins and outs of closing paypal - nor the comebacks -

I have heard a lot of how paypal aren't too good so hopefully this will work in your favour as they may not physically chase you for the money.
have you got another bank account you can use from now on?

fireflyfairy2 · 24/03/2007 22:07

Ebay will know it's her surely.. can't they check IP addresses?

sixlostmonkeys · 24/03/2007 22:09

as far as I know they don't check IPs.

I hear a lot of people saying that a seller ripped 100s of people off then simply started off again using a diff account - ebay are notorious for doing nothing about this. If they don't do it to the people who are ripping off thousands and thousands of pounds then i dount they will investigate for this

You can have as many accounts as you want on ebay - they just need a diff email addy for each one

BassMama · 24/03/2007 22:11

Oh god - i feel like a criminal?!

I have done nothing wrong. Just thinking that selling something that, to be honest, i really didnt want to sell, in order to try to get more/better work, would be fking easy on ebay.

DAMN. I do have another bank account - should i change it and take the money out?

Like i said, there isn't really money kept in my accounts as i generally get paid in cash.

I wouldn't usually suggest something like this but as I say, I reckon he does have the goods and well, what else can you do? You haven't got the money.....

It's up to you really, I know it's bad cos you will be thinking "what if he's genuine..?"

Sleep on it maybe?

Some years ago my local housing office claimed not to have received a letter i sent them. i didn't believe them and so I contacted the royal mail and they actually investigated it. I received a reply explaining the results of their investigations and assurance that all mail was reaching the said address. i passed this on to the housing office who looked very shame faced indeed. Maybe, if you did the same, i dunno, something could come out of it?? If he lives on a quiet round the postie may actually recall posting the jiffy bag? It's a long shot though, and would it stand up as proof?

JanH · 24/03/2007 22:20

paypal do know who you are. When my originally registered credit card hit their £500 spending limit I tried to register a new one and couldn't; so I tried to set up a new ID using an alternative email address and a different card and I still couldn't.

They Know Who You Are
