Anyone interested in a £300 by Easter ebay selling thread?

carrotsandcelery · 05/01/2012 23:05

Inspired by the threads before Christmas, I was hoping we could get another thread going to motivate us as we sell and ask each other questions as we go along.

I am hoping to start selling again once the dc go back to school next week.

Anyone else want to join me?

Well I've made £19 so far and have 44 items still running. I'm trying to be ruthless with all our stuff - basically we have a spare room but as our next baby is due in June it needs to be emptied. it's quite satisfying though!
And as for the maternity clothes I've bought - they're Isabella Oliver and Topshop so I'm hoping to sell them on afterwards and then they wont cost me much at all (hopefully!) - I might take photos of them now though as I'm going to be soooo busy with a newborn baby and v active toddler lol

mogs0 · 01/03/2012 22:45

Jardy - sorry, should have re-read my post!

Thank you and Blush. I have a serious weakness for lovely things...bags, shoes, pushchairs and many more. It does come in handy when I'm trying to raise funds though because I can always find things around the place to eBay which I can be fairly confident will reach a good price - false economy or what?! Grin

Tortoise · 01/03/2012 22:53

Most of my items end tomorrow. Jack Wills items not getting as much.interest as I hoped. Most watchers, 23, are on a mini Boden dress!

Tortoise · 02/03/2012 18:42

Mini Boden dress upto £12.99 now Shock
Slowly getting a few bids on other things.

Mousey84 · 02/03/2012 18:53

Hey everyone - I was on the xmas thread but life got busy and i didnt come on mn as much! I did make the target and more which was fab and now ebaying for a charity fundraising thing, so while Im a bit late in the game, Id love to join.

Heres the stuff I listed last weekend

Off to have a nosey at others. Anyone selling clothes ages 12-13? Or workboots in a size 6?

jardy · 02/03/2012 20:23

I am upto 150 pounds, thats half the target of 300.My little shed is arriving on Monday, thrilled to bits! All from selling stuff around the house on Ebay. Its surprising what you find that people are prepared to pay for and even get excited about.I have found that dried flower arrangements ( in good taste) go well, also vintage anything, vintage pens, vintage old toy train set, they seem to generate a lot of watchers.

Tortoise · 02/03/2012 21:10

I made £74 tonight, well happy with that Smile.
Fee bits still to end over the next few days. Will re-list all Sunday i think.
Also will see what else i can sell! Grin

PinkPanther27 · 02/03/2012 22:38

I've been busy adding stuff tonight - now got 87 items on! It's such a boring tedious job though - have to do it while I'm watching TV. Hope they all sell!

jardy · 03/03/2012 13:56

Well done Tortoise and yes Pinkpanther,I usually put off doing it until sunday night before the free listing goes! I am upto 180 pounds,so feeling delighted

PinkPanther27 · 03/03/2012 22:42

How is everyone doing? I now have 100 items listed (phew!) and still have more to add, but not doing it tonight! I've made £40 so far but only 5 items have ended so hoping to make a lot more. So lookign forward to a (reasonably) clutter free house :o

rebecklet · 03/03/2012 22:59

Not happy here. Having more trouble from buyers. Have had to open 2 non paying bidder cases and a real nightmare yesterday!

A buyer wins 2 items and before they pay but after the auction closes they send a message saying that postage won't cost what I have listed so will I charge less. I explain that it is postage and packaging and that they should not have bid if they did not agree. They insist they can pay half the P&P and I should not send recorded which I will not agree too. Mostly because of their attitude I think they will leave negative feedback about charges whatever I do :( I have now tried to cancel both transactions and they have asked again what price I can do and AGAIN I have said the P&P charges are clearly listed in the listing. I think even if the transactions get cancelled I may get a dreaded negative feedback :(

My blocked buyer list is growing by the day!

mogs0 · 03/03/2012 23:08

Pink - wow, you have been very busy!!

I currently have 19 items listed and bids on 10 of them.

My total is approaching £1,000 but that's partly made up of the crazily expensive buggy or 3.

I'm pretty sure I could raise the same amount again from the bits and pieces that I don't need in this house but it'll take me half a lifetime to get around to listing it all.

Sitting in a cupboard, gathering dust, are a set of Royal Doulton wine glasses. I don't drink wine and they have never been used (have some non-special ones for when friend's come round) but I'm not sure whether eBay is the best place for them...I'm worried they'll only sell for a couple of quid or get damaged in the post...any suggestons?

CointreauVersial · 04/03/2012 14:14

Sixteen items finishing this evening, but only three have bids; luckily one is a bid of £20 for a Hugo Boss jumper which my parents gave DH a couple of years back, that he didn't like and never wore.

I must list some more stuff; let's face it, it's such a grotty day I have no intention of leaving the house this afternoon. I tried to list more clothing last weekend, but it said I have reached my allowance Angry. I'm looking forward to when I don't have such restrictions.

Mogs - I'd say eBay is as good a place as any to sell your glasses. Maybe do a completed item search to see if anything similar has sold recently. That reminds me, I have a similarly unused set of cut crystal whisky tumblers - I'm not a cut crystal fan.....

CointreauVersial · 04/03/2012 14:17

Forgot to say - rebecklet - maybe you should discount the postage, as it surely will not cost double to send both items together in a parcel (assuming they are in the same package). But if they are worth more than £50 stick to your guns on the Recorded Delivery.

fergoose · 04/03/2012 15:25

also if you do refuse to combine the postage then you will have to send them in separate parcels

but yes do send recorded - it is for your benefit not the buyer's

mogs0 · 04/03/2012 17:57

Could someone look at this and this please?

I have just realised that I didn't put in the description that the dog tags aren't included in the listings. Do you think i should revise each one and add this information? Do I have to cancel the bids on the one auction before I can add to the description?

CointreauVersial · 04/03/2012 21:07

Mogs - I think if it's a Radley bag people might expect the dog tags!

With the one with no bids, just revise the description to make it clear they aren't included.

With the one with a bid, I think you should contact the highest bidder and let them know, to see if they want to withdraw the bid.

EmmaCB1 · 04/03/2012 21:14

Hello, I am a lurker! I have been watching this thread and learnt loads, thank you. Who knew second hand perfume would sell so well! I think between us, Dh and I are up to £240ish so I hope by Easter we can get to the magic £300. I have 2 questions though if you don't mind me joining you at this late stage.

Firstly, I have been putting a starting price of .99p and this seems fine for popular items like grobags, mini boden etc, but just now 2 separate pairs of as-new gap jeans went for 99p and £1.04 Hmm. Most of the things I have left to sell may well go this way too, and I know every penny helps, but what would you all do? Wait for a free listings weekend and try for a bit more? Or just accept the fees, and keep re listing if things don't sell first time? If someone wants some jeans surely a few extra pounds wouldn't put them off?

And secondly, if you are still with me and haven't dozed off, I have lots of bundles to get through. I plan to keep the autumn/ winter ones until sept but for spring/ summer what's best? Looking through other threads, people seem to be saying stick to 4 or 5 items and put the highest quality label in the title. Does anyone have any more tips? I will look at what other sellers are doing, too.

Thanks everyone, and good luck with your listings.

mogs0 · 05/03/2012 10:21

Cointreau - I've revised the two listings and emailed the highest bidder. No reply yet, though. I'm cross with myself for not putting it in the first place. I sold another one a couple of weeks ago which also didn't have the dog tag and listed it as such but for some reason it completely slipped my mind with these two...maybe it's my subconscious telling me that I don't really want to get rid of them Grin

Emma - I hadn't fully appreciated the value of used perfume either! Mine have loads of watchers and one has gone up to £7 overnight - they're not going to make me a millionaire or anything but they've been sitting in the cupboard for years, not being used so if I get £30 then I'll be really happy!

I'm not sure about clothes bundles. I've only sold a few things. I did sell a group of three tops last year that were George and possibly next which went for £12...I was quite surprised as only expected them to go for their start price of £2.99.

I've got loads of ds' summer stuff to list. We've just been on holiday and nearly everything is too small for him now. I don't know whether to do a couple of outfits in a bundle or a set of 2 or 3 tops then another set of shorts.
I try to think of how I like to buy clothes off eBay but it doesn't really help me to decide HmmGrin.

mogs0 · 05/03/2012 10:24

Also, it's really annoying when things, which you think will be popular, only sell for 99p.

Whilst I don't like having to pay a listing fee, I think it's worth paying a listing fee of 15p if something sells for £2 or £3 more.

rebecklet · 05/03/2012 11:09

That's the annoying thing, I do offer a discount automatically! I charge £2.25 for the first item and 40p for each extra item and she says I should send just send it second class and charge her £1.

Glad it's going better for everyone else :)

Lougle · 05/03/2012 11:43

I've been lurking but thought I'd pop on with a boast Grin

We're moving house in the next few weeks, so thought it would be about time to sell off stuff we don't need.

Since 20th February, I have made £1,417.43! (£1573 inc postage, but ofc that is money spent!).

My best one was a large item which cost me £700 3 years ago and I sold for £1000 last week Grin grin]

I've had a couple of bigger items which didn't go. It's hard - Minimum reserve is £50, but postage is £20 so overall it gets pricey for the buyer, but I couldn't bear it if a crib or moses basket in mint condition went for 99p Sad

I've also advertised some Bumgenious nappies on clothnappytree and within about 10 mins had my first sale for £42!

carrotsandcelery · 05/03/2012 13:04

Emma when I started off I sold a lot of nice clothes for 99p but got fed up with it. I started listing entirely similar items for £2.99 and £4.99 etc and found I at least got that or that it often sparked people into a mini bidding war for them.

At the moment I am waiting for free listing weekends for stuff like that but as mogs said the extra 15p doesn't really matter so much once the price has gone up a bit.

Now when I sell something I ask myself if I would be happy for it to sell for that amount when I set the price and adjust the price accordingly.

mogs have you looked somewhere like China Search to see if they sell your glasses and what they would offer for them. Someone might be looking there to complete a set. I think they would then advise on packaging or send someone for them.

OP posts:
mogs0 · 05/03/2012 14:27

Reb - your postage charges sound more than reasonable and your buyer is being very unreasonable. I hope you get a positive outcome.

Lougle - wow, that's an amazing total!! What was your £1000 item? Blush

mogs0 · 05/03/2012 14:29

Carrots - thanks, I'll investigate china search.
