Binge eaters accountability thread

A thread to check in and say how we are feeling with no judgment. Taking one day at a time.

OP posts:
Difford · 15/06/2022 19:49

I'm currently listening to an audio book called Just Eat It by Laura Thomas and it's brilliant. I'm trying my best to practise 'food neutrality' to stop the binge/restrict cycle. I've also had a big clear out of my wardrobe to get rid of the stuff that hasn't fitted for years, feels very liberating!
Like others have said, I think the key is focusing on how I feel rather than what I weigh.

cheeseisthebest · 15/06/2022 21:12

I've realised something.
When I think fuck it I will put up with being fat I eat what I want.
Then when I decide actually I need to lose weight I get into the zone I'm focused for a few days but get annoyed cos progress is so slow. So I get back into the bad habits cos it takes so long to see change.
Does that make sense?

I'm going to look for that audio book. Getting rid of clothes that don't fit really helps to remove negative feelings. I'm giving up on weight loss myself and I'm trying to heal my fractured relationship with food. I had quite a lot of snacky foods yesterday but I didn't go into the binge zone.

That completely makes sense. If I'm restricting food to the point of obsession then I want 2 stone off in 2 weeks for my efforts. If I'm off the wagon I eat like a rabid animal. What I'm trying to learn is the in between, the normal way to eat. I'm so used to being on or off a diet that I've forgotten how to just be 'normal'. I think once you learn normal then your body will naturally find it's happy weight.

Haha this is so me! I’m so impatient!

I had a real word with myself, and so did my husband, about setting unrealistic goals that make me fail and then binge.

So as much as it pains me to slow right down, I actually feel happier because I’m reaching those goals and the boost it’s giving me each day is insane.

sleepwhenidie · 16/06/2022 10:06

Can I suggest ‘The Slow Down Diet’ by Marc David - NOT a diet book as the title suggests!

sorry I haven’t posted much, work so busy. Lots of very positive updates here 😊.

Buster suggest you make a list of things that bring you pleasure/joy/absorb you. Big changes sound like you may have lost yourself a little along the way, definitely not unusual. How can you find yourself again, is it a hobby, a course, a sporty skill, a job, volunteering? Nothing that has to do with the rest of your family, as much as you love them!

sleepwhenidie · 16/06/2022 10:06

Sport or skill!

1moreyear · 16/06/2022 10:14

So today I've took advice and bought some new summer clothes that fit me! I look 100 times better in them because obviously you look less fat if you're not bursting out of your clothes!

I'm now eating a guilt free coffee and cake because it's not a binge and doesn't need to be the start of a binge. It's just coffee and cake....the end.

🤞🏻

I've been thinking about this a lot over the past few days. Asking myself do I still want to do this life, weighing it up in my head. I do need to find myself again but it's so hard. I think my key thing is loneliness. But then I find it hard finding friends like myself. I suppose I've given up here in Egypt as I knew from the get go we wouldn't be staying. Fingers crossed our next destination is more likely to 'us'.

I'm so pleased to hear this. Well done on the new clothes and even more well done on the coffee mad cake. I'm really proud of you. 😊☕🍰

SquirrelSoShiny · 16/06/2022 10:38

Marking place. I have ADHD which has helped explain why I literally forget to eat and drink all day then demolish 2000 calories in the evening.

Gmamaofboys13 · 16/06/2022 11:42

I'm in the UK, and have been on a NHS waiting list for an eating disorder clinic. I was offered the momentum program in conjunction with BEAT. See link below or search momentum beat on Google for a pdf for more details. I don't know how to get referred onto the program, but to be refered to the eating disorder clinic I contacted my GP and they did it.

During the program they use the book by Dr.Christopher Fairburne Overcoming Binge Eating. This book can be used for self help.

I'm really liking this thread.
I've discovered dark choc rice cakes, together are really nice and I'm having one each evening with a cup of tea.
Hits the sweet spot but low calorie.
Taking it one meal/snack at a time.

cheeseisthebest · 16/06/2022 15:14

They not together!

Guess what I have just spent the last few days doing? The flights for our holiday next week were cancelled and it’s been a stressful week at work. I have just been roaming around the house eating stuff, buying more stuff, promising myself I’m done and doing it all again. The only treats that I buy are stuff I don’t like, so I have been eating stuff for the sake of it. I feel like crap and I’m out if the house now waiting at school. I saw the dr this morning and I have now tipped over into very obese. I need to stop now. Loving reading the thread tho

Just checking in to say hello. I'm on holiday currently, and am making a conscious effort to eat healthily, move more, etc having realised I could barely squeeze myself into the airplane seat. Lots of relatable comments on here re self loathing, self sabotage, etc.

I'm sorry to hear that, I'm in the same boat, my flights are cancelled and we need to wait to see if we're rebooked on the new schedule, 24 hours before its due. Not sure why they can't just book us on it now! 😬 Give yourself a break, you've had a stressful time and have reverted back to your coping mechanism, things, will calm down and you'll move past this.

Yes. Unfortunately binge eating literally makes you loathe yourself which feds the devil on our shoulder. I was reading about a hair salon that has a curtain that can be pulled across the mirror, so the client doesn't sit there for hours scrutinising their face whilst they get their hair done. It brought a tear to my eye as I always leave the salon feeling like a great big lump of lard. 😔 We are so horrible to ourselves.

notaflyingmonkey · 16/06/2022 16:36

I had to explain to my hairdresser that I hate having to sit and look ay myself for an hour, and so had stopped going for years. She thinks I'm mad because for most women it is a treat.

BusterGonad · 16/06/2022 17:51

Isn't sad how hard we are on ourselves? I used to love a haircut, and for some reason I'd always buy a Mac lipstick after. I suppose to go with my new look. Where did all my confidence go???

LucyLatimer · 16/06/2022 18:09

Thanks @BusterGonad . Tomorrow is another day

sleepwhenidie · 16/06/2022 18:22

LucyLatimer you say the only treats you buy are things you don’t like..could you try buying food you do like? If you are going to eat something (anything) why not make it the best quality thing that you can get that you will enjoy the most, whether that’s a cake, an avocado or a piece of meat?

LucyLatimer · 16/06/2022 20:55

Hmm, right now if I bought things I really liked, they wouldn’t last long. I think I would want to eat them until they’re gone straight away. It’s so childish but I can’t remember when I last had a treat food that I like in the house and didn’t. Good for meals is always good quality and I mostly cook from scratch

Your comment made me think @BusterGonad I used to take pride in my appearance, had my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon in Carnaby St, so have been trying to track back to the point that hair cuts changed for me, and I think it is tied up with when I became a mother/deciding I was rubbish at it, and beating myself up for it. Starving myself then binging seems to be part of that mindset.

I am close to 60 and obese, having been diagnosed with all sorts of health problems because of it. So the question is, do I have the self awareness to get on top of this and start to take pride in myself again? I am sick of wearing the equivalent of sack cloth in order to try and make myself invisable. I am sick of the person that I have become.
