Hello,
would anyone be interested in joining a thread to support each other as we support teens with eating disorders @MNHQ - I'm tagging you in as am conscious of triggering issues and wanted your ok/ground rules to such a thread..

Happy to share our story with DD if others would feel it is helpful...

@myrtleWilson yes, the balance is so tricky. I think if I'd said 'actually, please admit', the paed would have done. He actually said to me that he has a colleague across the country who won't admit for less than 3 weeks. I think he was giving me permission to say 'this is too hard'.

On that note, this is so hard!! DD1 refused breakfast, then missed snack because of her hospital appointment. Then at the appointment, the dietician said we had to add 500 calories per day, minimum, to get adequate weight gain.

So this afternoon DD1 had a smoothie for snack (330 calories). Dinner came (6.15 ish) and she had shepherd's pie, which DH had to feed her to get it eaten, then pancakes which she wolfed down.

9.30 came and I thought that she really should have her evening snack. She needed 362 calories, so I offered yoghurt and either a glass of milk or Fortijuice. She said she was still full from pudding. I said 'Shame, but it's on the plan'. She started to refuse, but I told her I'd be phoning the hospital. She had the yoghurt. Then I gave her Fortijuice and she said that she couldn't have it, she'd be sick. We've heard it all before, tbh, so I persevered. After one mouthful, she took the next but refused to swallow it, looking for something to spit into. I told her that I'd have to measure the amount and give her something else. She promptly vomited. All over the dining room table, DH's tablet, uncontrollably sick.

The poor girl had been telling the truth and she really did feel sick. I felt awful for pushing it, and guilty that I couldn't help seeing all the calories that were wasted Sad. How stupid is that? I'm thinking 'oh no, poor DD1...oh no, that's pancake, so all those calories are gone...'

It's all just nuts when I look back at my early posts on this thread.

Oh bless you Lougle that is a crap end to the day 🙁

I suppose with the hidden calories thing it sort of depends on whether you believe that weight gain cures the anorexia 😕 from my understanding the theory is once they are weight restored (ideally plus a bit extra) all the anorexic thinking/behaviour stops 🤔

I'm not totally convinced myself as dd had body confidence issues before the ED so I can't see that that will magically disappear unfortunately.

Camhs day tomorrow, psychiatrist in the morning and cbt at midday.

Lougle · 16/02/2021 23:02

I can see the logic both ways with calories. In terms of weight gain, DD1's Consultant referred to them as 'life-saving calories'. So if you can get more in unnoticed, then that's great for health and not alarming for your child. However, as highlighted above, the consequences could kick in down the line, that your child believes they've been having 1800 calories and putting on weight, so if they get more ill mentally, they will think they need to restrict even more to control their weight or reduce it, and they won't believe you that they don't need to restrict to that level, because they have the lived experience of gaining on '1800 calories' when in fact they had, say, 2300 calories.

myrtleWilson · 16/02/2021 23:25

lougle you've expressed my thoughts re hidden calories and my DD much better than I did. But thats all it is - my thoughts - I firmly believe it works for some and you have to make a judgement call for your DC. And god knows, we're making judgement calls all over the place - we all just do what we think works for us in the moment and thats absolutely all we can do...plus navigating our judgement calls against what the illness is dictating at any one point - so for example, we used to have a pretty even distribution of calories for snacks and an even distribution for meals. But right now, DD is tired and not great at dinner and supper, so we've adjusted the plan to try to decrease dinner and supper at the same time as meeting the ED requirement about the amount of elements at any one meal Did it work yesterday - yes, did it work today - no!

We're all second guessing ourselves constantly, I think. I don't know whether I should be praying that DD1 is readmitted, or thanking God that the Consultant decided not to readmit this morning. He himself didn't seem to know, because he told us he was going to readmit then changed his mind!

Scr1bblyGum · 17/02/2021 06:19

Hi Myrtle

No behavioural stuff here( sounds great). We have FT, meal support and individual therapy fortnightly. From what they’ve said that’s it. IP or Olanzapine next.😩

Girlie when did you start getting CBT?

Lougle · 17/02/2021 07:43

@Scr1bblyGum I think antipsychotics can be really helpful in AN. Olanzapine seems to work by increasing appetite, but DD1's new Psych prefers aripiprazole, which works by reducing distress around eating. <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/brainstorm/201905/why-are-there-no-approved-drugs-anorexia%3Famp&ved=2ahUKEwjVyf2XtfDuAhVSoVwKHbZMBBYQFjAJegQICBAB&usg=AOvVaw3AUdxkIAd92Gh87BNCDcfm&ampcf=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">This article is helpful.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/02/2021 10:14

It's really interesting the pros and cons re hidden calories, I hadn't really thought about the issues down the line but yes that makes sense. I suppose I'm hoping that dd gets to a healthier weight, starts to eat more as she starts to recover and cares less about weight gain. I'm also hoping dd never knows her weight again!

Not hoping for much am I? 🤪😉

Scribbly she's been having it via zoom for about 3 weeks, not made any difference yet...

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 17/02/2021 15:15

Hi All, I have just read a few of the posts and will be going back and reading more. I am just starting off on this rocky road with my DS 13. It's so nice that there is a support page like this.

Valleyofthedollymix · 17/02/2021 15:25

Hello @SoTiredNeedHoliday - welcome to a place you'd rather not be. I'm a relatively new arrival (things blew up just before New Year) but it's been so helpful and everyone is so generous with their time and hard-earned wisdom.

What I would say generally is please push for help from CAMHS - there are protocols that need to be followed so you should get seen soon (ideally). Though they're overwhelmed at the moment. At the very least get a meal plan emailed as this was all we had for a few weeks but following it meant that DD didn't lose any more weight and put a tiny bit on.

myrtleWilson · 17/02/2021 15:42

hello @SoTiredNeedHoliday (very apt username for this thread btw!) sorry you find yourself here but welcome. We've all been in your position and although Valley is a newish arrival, what I've learned and seen time and time again on this thread is how quickly we become experts in the world of ED.

When you're ready tell us a bit about what you're going through and if you want advice, someone will no doubt be able to furnish that if you want to scream into the void, please do so and do share any success you have - we love to be able to have a moment to cheer someone else's progress.

@SoTiredNeedHoliday glad you found us here Smile

@myrtleWilson I think we need a new thread!! Are you going to start a new one? Smile

exLtEveDallas · 17/02/2021 18:13

If someone does start a new thread please make sure you tag us all - I’d hate to lose you!

Not great here right now. DD was doing her food tech GCSE practical at home today and it bought up a load of issues - not least that she wouldn’t taste anything she was cooking because it would be ‘extra’

It was weigh day yesterday. She’s put on 400g but I saw the look the two HCPs gave each other - I think it’s because she’d put on a kilo the last 2 weeks, so this weeks was a drop (even though it was still a gain). But I don’t know - because they didn’t tell me!

myrtleWilson · 17/02/2021 21:25

Eve - food tech practical must have been your idea of a cosmic joke at the moment... How difficult for you both..

I've started the second thread - here is the link but I'll tag you all too - don't want to lose anyone and not just for my own selfish reasons of needing you all!
