TTC - First time home insemination

First time posting so bare with me.

We are in a same sex relationship, and I just thought i'd share our story so far to see if anyone else is going through the same or has any advice/tips for myself and my partner.

We first went to a private clinic, and payed hundreds for scans, blood tests, screening etc, only to be told my partner couldn't donate her eggs (we were counting on this as it lowers the price by about 3-4000 pounds!), we were then told we should try IUI at the clinic which would cost us about 2-3000 pounds. We went home after this appointment and had a chat, we decided to try home insemination first, and if it doesn't work after 2 times, we will then go back to the clinic, but I wasn't finding them very helpful, and they were quite rude to us!

We searched online for sperm banks and came across cryos in denmark. We researched all the legal complications and know all about it, and decided as so many people do try this, we were going to as well. We ordered our anonymous washed donor sperm (MOT20) 2 vials (all we could afford.)

It arrived on tuesday (it lasts for 7 days in a nitro tank), and I started using the clear blue dual hormone predictor kit. I also use a fertility app and have been vaguely monitoring my cervical mucas. I tested negative from monday (the start of my fertility window) until yesterday (friday) i went straight from negative to peak on the clear blue monitor! I researched this to make sure it was right and I saw that a lot of people go straight from low to peak, especially if they missed their surge (which i may have done). The app also said I was due to have peak fertility friday and saturday, so i'm confident in the test and we decided to inseminate one vial on friday at 6pm (8 hours after my positive result) and we inseminated again on sunday at 6am. Just before I had the insemination, I was getting pretty bad cramps and I think ovulation may have started, although i'm not 100%. I got some cramp after inseminating too.

Frozen sperm lives in the body for 12-24 hours (apparantly) but some swimmers can last longer. So we inseminated at 6pm which will cover me (hopefully) until 6pm saturday, whilst also inseminating at 6am saturday which would cover me until 6am (hopefully) sunday. We sat and talked constantly about the timing but we just decided to go for it, as like everybody says, even if the timing is perfectly right and your CM is perfect, there is still only a 10-20% chance of conception.

I'm just praying my clearblue test was correct and my peak is friday and saturday like it shows. (My app also shows this like i said). I have a 29 day cycle and it's hardly EVER irregular, so I think we've done all what we should have.

Now we're onto our two week wait which i'm not looking forward to! Like I keep saying to myself, it is our first time trying and we could have done a number of things wrong. It is just trial and error from here on out! If anyone else wants to share their story about home insemination with frozen sperm, using clearblue monitors / success stories, i would really appreciate that!

Hey @LouMill really sorry to hear about the pcos but amazing job losing the weight I'll keep my fingers crossed all goes well for you. And thank you x

Waiting2BAMummy · 06/07/2019 15:25

My donor is now coming around 9pm as he's travelling and his plane is delayed. I offered for him to do tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday insisted if he was tired from travelling but he said he's still happy to come tonight.

In my head he was going to be gone by 9 so that's just another hour of stressing! Arrrggghhhhhhhhhhh

Is it Tuesday yet?!

It's all going to be worth it..... it's all going to be worth it....

LanieM87 · 06/07/2019 17:54

@Waiting2BAMummy ahh not ideal, but he seems very keen not to let you down, so I’d take that as a plus!

Of course it will all be worth it! Fingers crossed this is your month for sure 😊 x

Freezerbump · 06/07/2019 20:29

@Waiting2BAMummy you ok lovely? X

Waiting2BAMummy · 06/07/2019 20:45

he isn't here yet @Freezerbump due any minute.

How are you feeling? x

VogonPoetess · 06/07/2019 20:46

Hope it’s okay for me to hop on this thread! It’s been so encouraging to read and so thrilled for @TimeIhadaNameChange!
I recently decided to give ICI a go. I’m 36 and Mr Right is nowhere in sight, so am going to do this on my own. My plan is to get two or three MOT10 straws from cryos and space them about 12 hours apart in a couple weeks. I’m relying on the clear blue ovulation kit for this try, but will also start monitoring my bbt. Fingers crossed!

If ICI doesn’t work after a couple of tries, I think I will jump into IVF. Any suggestions on finding a doctor/clinic who won’t judge you for wanting to do this without a partner?

Waiting2BAMummy · 06/07/2019 20:55

welcome to the madness @vogonpoetess I haven't been anywhere near a clinic so unfortunately cannot help you with that. I am using a donor who I found on a co-parenting website in fact he is currently in the bathroom doing his thing!

VogonPoetess · 06/07/2019 21:03

Thanks, @Waiting2BAMummy!
Smile and that is awesome! Good luck!!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 06/07/2019 21:56

Hope all's going well @Waiting2BAMummy! Let us know that you're OK, please.

Thanks for your good wishes, @VogonPoetess! Unfortunately Cryos no longer deliver to private addresses unless you're a health professional. But there is an alternative which is mentioned in this thread (Sorry, am on phone).

Freezerbump · 06/07/2019 21:57

@Waiting2BAMummy just welfare checking you lovely xx
I'm good, exhausted and no af yet but sore boobs so think she's en route :/
Let me know when you're done!

@VogonPoetess love that name! Oh Freddled grunt buggerly, thy miturations are to me.....

Feel free to ignore me if that means nothing to you...

Welcome :)

Waiting2BAMummy · 06/07/2019 22:06

Thanks for your concern @TimeIhadaNameChange @Freezerbump he's gone and I'm okay.

I was so stressed out though that I couldn't get the aoftcup in ended up spilling 'the goods' everywhere! I got the cup in in the end and anyway as there maybe still be one or two troopers hanging in there!

VogonPoetess · 06/07/2019 22:11

@Freezerbump thanks! And I adore the hitchhiker’s guide. Grin
@TimelhadaNameChange I actually live in the US (in London atm for work and stumbled across this amazing forum) and will be back home when ready for the magic mot sticks to be delivered Smile Per their website, they can send to home addresses, so hopefully that’s right.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 06/07/2019 22:35

Glad to hear you're ok, @Waiting2BAMummy! Sorry to hear it didn't all go to plan but you still have tomorrow and Monday. And as DP says, it only takes one!

Do you transfer the sperm in the softcup? Isn't that tricky? I did it by squooshing into me and then using the softcup to keep it there. Well, DP did the squooshing but it would have been easy enough to do myself, I think. Lying down. But don't change what you've been doing if it's normally fine.

Waiting2BAMummy · 06/07/2019 22:40

He does his thing straight into the cup @TimeIhadaNameChange I have no idea why I panicked so much.

Nevermind, as you say I still have tomorrow and Monday.

As yet though I haven't even had a flashing smiley face on my OPK. I tested Thursday and got my expected blank circle (as you always get that for the first test each cycle) but then didn't test yesterday. I tested this morning and still got a blank circle, I wondered if that might be because I didn't test yesterday but did another this afternoon and still an empty circle.

We'll see what happens tomorrow.

How are you feeling? x

LanieM87 · 06/07/2019 22:46

@Waiting2BAMummy glad to hear that everything was “legit” hopefully you’ll have better success tomorrow and Monday! Hopefully you’ll be less stressed out now that’s he been!

Welcome @VogonPoetess !

LanieM87 · 06/07/2019 22:49

@TimeIhadaNameChange could you please let me know how many insems you did this cycle and how they related to your +OPK, I’m trying to decide whether it’s best to do insem day before and day of!
Are you experiencing many pregnancy symptoms at the minute? x

TimeIhadaNameChange · 07/07/2019 07:38

Bloody typical that you've not had a high OPK, @Waiting2BAMummy! Hopefully you'll get it today. Have you checked with a cheap one-off test?

@LanieM87 - I pushed the boat out this time and got 3 MOT20 straws (instead of MOT10 which I'd got before). Following advice from successful people posting on Cryos FB page we did it a about an hour after the first solid smiley, then 12 and 24 hours later. I put a softcup in afterwards, and lay with my bum on a pillow for as long as I could stand.

My biggest symptom is almost continual period-like cramping. Not bad, but then I usually don't get them too bad. It's just an annoying niggle. My boobs are sore if I touch them, and I go through phases of nausea (threw up once, but I think that was the power of suggestion) but nothing too bad at all. Oh, and I'm tired a lot of the time but I often am so I'm not sure if it's linked or not.

I hope you're all feeling this way very very soon!

Waiting2BAMummy · 07/07/2019 09:25

Glad you're not feeling too ghastly @TimeIhadaNameChange most people say the nausea really kicks in around 6-8 weeks but hopefully you can avoid all of that. Are you going to wait until after your 12 week scan to start buying stuff?

I just got my first flashing smiley face, hope I still get my peak tomorrow. I think it's all messed up because I usually start testing on day 7 but didn't start until day 9 this cycle and then I missed day 10.

Freezerbump · 07/07/2019 09:42

Well.... I'm now 1 day overdue....

I'm going to hold out until day 31 as that's my longest ever cycle and with the surgery I might just miss it this time I guess but

Interestingly @TimeIhadaNameChange I used 2 10's and 1 20 this time..

Waiting2BAMummy · 07/07/2019 09:48

Fingers crossed for you @Freezerbump it would be lovely for us both to get our BFP's this month. x

Freezerbump · 07/07/2019 14:21

Bit weird... after all this, what if I am?!

(She says balancing on her good leg painting the kitchen..)

Waiting2BAMummy · 07/07/2019 15:12

It's funny you say that @Freezerbump, I had that exact same thought this morning. As much as I absolutely want this, I suddenly thought, OMG, what if this actually works?!

That said, another 2 attempts like last night and I don't think I'll need to be worrying about that!

Freezerbump · 07/07/2019 15:16

@Waiting2BAMummy 😂 when's round 2 and 3?

Waiting2BAMummy · 07/07/2019 15:18

Tonight and tomorrow @Freezerbump

goodnightsugarpop · 07/07/2019 22:45

Hi all, another newbie here :)

I'm gonna be meeting up with my sperm donor for our first try in the next few days - probably going to ovulate around Wednesday I think? I'm nervous & can't think about anything else but I assume that's normal...!
