39 years stolen by kindness, I don't know where to put my rage or process

In June I lost 39 years of a partnership, through what turns out to be the crulest kindness I have ever experianced. Not by a bad man, a kind man, a man who loved me in his way as a friend. A man who, after 10 years together, was offered two choices, neither of which would have taken me out of his life.

We had been togther 10 years (since I was 18 and he 23) We had known each other as friends since I was 13 and he 18. At 28 I said I wanted to have children with him. I said I understood if he didn't want children (he'd said as much before) and if that was his choice then I would go to a sperm bank. However if I did the latter, then he and I couldn't be a couple anymore but I would always be his friend and in each other's lives if he still wanted.

He thought about it for a week and then said, ok, lets have kids together. I thought that meant he loved me like I did him. I thought he hung the moon and stars and, I don't know, I never imagined he didn't want that life with me, he said yes right?

Right. Wrong. The kindest man in my life was it turns out a people pleaser. He knew how protective I was of being able to make my own choices in life. He knew, he knew me.

3 children and 2 months off our 39th anniversary together I sat him down to talk. Really talk because he was quiet man. Were there red flags during those years? Absolutely. I thought it was me. why did he never reach for me first, why was it always me? why did he think me carry our child made me unattractive, he never said but I could see it. I thought a man would see the miracle, our child, growing inside me and a man would find that beautiful. So when he didn't, I thought, ok, it's me. I'm not pretty enough, skinny enought (pregnant!) I'm too strong a personality, I'm not loveable enough. Anything as long it was my fault, because the alternative was unthinkable. if I was enough, why wasn't I enough.

I worked, supported the family, paid the bills, not because I wanted to be in control, because he never took notice about that stuff. No one was going to fight for me, or even better, stand by my shoulder and fight with me.

A kind man. A great father, patient, all you could ever wish a father was, that is what he was and still is. I should also say, a very high functioning autistic man. I never knew that for years, I discovered it slowly, so slowly.

The talk. Simple, I asked direct questions about us. What I learnt was this. He thought loving me as a friend was the same as being in love. He never really desired me, I don't think sex ever meant much to him whoever it might have been in his life. When I gave him that choice all those years ago this is what he did. He sat with it. Then he made a the decision that my choice to be a single parent wasn't good and so he agreed to have children with me. He never told me, never indicated anthing at all. he let me believe he wanted it, he wanted us and a future. He didn't, not like that. He is a man that stole at a minimum 29 years of my life and truth to be told 39 years. He is a man who gave up his entire life as well, because he didn't think being a single parent was good. That's it. The whole truth.

I moved into the annex, he helped me. I still support the family, pay the bills. The house is for our kids, that was always the plan. they are high functioning autistic but two are still at home and I need my family to always have a safe place they can just be themselves in. I will continue to do this because that is who I am.

For him, nothing has really changed. The house is there, we live there only I sleep in the annex. I still do my thing and he still educates the youngest. Only difference is my sleeping/living location which is in the garden.

I have so much rage inside me and I have no where to put it. I cannot put it on him. it would be like whipping a puppy. He made a choice because he's a kind man and a people pleaser. I cannot find an outlet but I need one. Something, anything but I'm so full of hurt, rage and I feel like I'm beeing knocked to my knees everyday. I shove myself up and power through, go to work, help others because it's my job and I love it. Then I keep falling to my knees and I'm as so tired of fighting but I don't know how to be anything else after decades of fighting for everyone. I get, go down, get up and all the while the rage consumes me with nowhere to go. All I can do is write it down to release the pressure valve, that is why I'm here.

Not because I think anyone can fix me but because I need some human contact that see's me, after so many decades of not truely being seen I need just one human being to see me and say it's ok. That I'm enough. Not enough for him, I know I'm not, I just want to count somewhere on this earth and know I'm seen.

thank you for listening.

Just because he says things OP it doesn’t mean they are true. I very much doubt his version of events. It sounds like a story designed to wound you and also make him not at all responsible for causing any pain - plus he gets to believe he’s the good guy. Plus he still gets the bills paid. I heavily suspect the truth is he didn’t want to lose you but is emeoiotnally stunted and doesn’t like admitting any fault so constructs weird narratives to make himself look ‘good’. For some reason you believe him. Leave the idiot OP and reclaim some freedom.

Exactly.

A very perceptive response. That's what I was thinking but didn't have the words. What is love? The Christan definition is that you love someone if you are prepared to die for them. I suspect, in that context, this lady's husband loves her

This.

There are many issues with expecting conventional romantic and sexual love from an autistic man.

This is what makes working through those worthwhile. Knowing in your heart they would die for you.

Donniemac · 10/10/2026 20:56

Maybe I'm just a sweetie-but I think so. Opinion of course.

Donniemac · 10/10/2026 20:59

Not just an autistic man-any man. We're profoundly programmed to provide and protect. But not to create emotion of the kind portrayed as romantic love.

Maisey1991 · 10/10/2026 21:00

OP I’m sorry ❤️ a very close friend if mine is in this exact situation. She has multiple hobbies now the kids are older. She goes on holiday with the kids, her friends and once a year as a family unit. She also will be living in the annex soon. She also had a breakdown last year. Pleaseeeee find a therapist, before the repressed anger consumes you ❤️ and maybe some exercise like running swimming or lifting weights might help process things too! Running is good for grief processing and I suppose this is somewhat grief aswell as anger x

queenMab99 · 10/10/2026 21:12

I don't know how to resolve your anger, or how to improve your situation, but I don't think the problem is that you weren't enough for him, but that you have more to give than he wants or needs, and you want more from him than he is capable of giving. Do not ever think that you were, or are not, enough. My circumstances were different but I was very angry in my 40s and divorced my exhusband, I have since realised that my mistake was, thinking my husband was the right person for me, and I for him. How are we to blame, in our teens and 20s, we are not mature enough to judge characters and needs. Marriage is a bit of a poker game at the best of times. It's took me till my 60s to make peace with past mistakes, even though I remarried in my late 40s.

ElectricLegs · 10/10/2026 21:18

As others have suggested, therapy sounds like a good idea.

He hasn't stolen anything from you, judging by the marital hellscape some describe in this forum. Be thankful for all of the positives, including all those years of stability.

TinaBeliever · 10/10/2026 21:35

Beautifully written fiction.

Wildgoat · 10/10/2026 21:35

I’m not sure what he’s stolen either,

TinaBeliever · 10/10/2026 21:35

Beautifully written fiction.

If it's fiction there are plenty of others living through the same book that the thread will help.

Challenger2A7 · 10/10/2026 21:39

Maybe you concentrated too much on what YOU wanted. Men are not usually sentimental about babies in the way that women are. If you pushed and shoved him into becoming a father, that's not good.

Thepossibility · 10/10/2026 22:25

borntobequiet · 10/10/2026 07:44

This.

You engineered the situation in the first place.

I thought this as well. OP is entitled to her feelings, but it sounds like this man has always just been himself? I guess she didn't realise early on he was autistic but it doesn't sound like he's tricked her at any stage pretending to be something he wasn't.

Brokentoes85 · 10/10/2026 22:56

Did AI write this or are you trying to write a book or something? Do you talk like this in real life?

Waytoohothot · 10/10/2026 23:16

But you chose him and you knew he was emotionly unavailable and to be fair very unavailable and he wont change..its not his fault you chose him and its not his fault he cant do feelings or give you what you wanted, i think you are angry with yourself for staying, it sounds like you do everything so why dont you just leave, i say this with kindness but you sound like you are being a martyr and now i have to look after the kids too( that you chose to have)..no one forced you into this life and its a bit odd to be 13 and "friends" with an.adult whos 18

grindergirl · 10/10/2026 23:24

Love can take many forms. The hearts and flowers stuff is just a concept, an illusion. The woman you were at 28 is not the woman you are now, OP. And neither is the man. We are all like snakes, shedding skins, and growing into different realities. It's probably middle-aged angst, but pining for what might have been serves no purpose. If you don't want to go through the rest of your life feeling bitter and angry, you have to come to terms with the choice that YOU made

ItsNotLoveActually · 10/10/2026 23:30

What, 39 yrs later you realise he is autistic? What about the rest of your life together and the kids?
Ok, you might be coming to some crisis in your life and summing everything up but to blame him for something you knew full well about from the start, is mind boggling. What do you want out of this?

Becausemymumtoldmeso · 10/10/2026 23:31

You need to switch your mindset. Nothing has changed if nothing has changed…. You say the only difference is where you are sleeping. You knew something was off and you looked within and thought it was something you were lacking. But look at what you do have, your lovely family, happy secure healthy kids, à family home, and he has helped too. Not in the standard way, ypu say financial etc, but without him there you wouldn’t have achieved this and have the same family. Accept he has autism and use that to rewrite your history, start seeing it through his eyes and accept it’s different to him. In his eyes your life is completely different- black and white and he is probably confused about everything you are delivering now. Rewind and go through every resentment, every time you felt misjudged by him and try relive it through his eyes too, then work on it in your mind how both of you are coming to such different outcomes and feelings. This built up over years leaves you to two completely different lives and only one of you thinking they are happy. Try marriage counselling, a good one will understand his autism and help you work together and give you the tools to work through differently and potentially change the outcome of your relationship, you have nothing to lose technically so why not. Good luck xx

Invest some of what you've been investing in others, in yourself. Find a good therapist so you've got your safe non judgemental space where it's just for you. A space where you're seen and heard for who you are and where you can unpack the hurt, rage and all the other emotions. Invest in yourself by having weekly sessions to begin with.

smilingontheinside · 10/10/2026 23:49

41 years with someone who never loved me. When the children had left home I asked myself why I was still there. I couldn't give myself a goid answer so I got an appointment with a solicitor and petitioner for divorce. When I told him there was absolutely no emotion at all. I didnt know where I would go or what I would do. But 10 years later I am happier than I've ever been. I took solo holidays, got fit, went dancing and met someone new. We have a lovely life now, holidays, theatre trips anything we want to do. The year after I left my marital home I was heartbroken and sad about the wasted years but then realised that I was now free to do me.My home is how I want it (new husband loves my style anyway) I now wear bright clothes, have tattoos and piercings that I always wanted and am me and my new husband loves me. Good luck, I hope you find peace, just don't waste the years you have left. Go live for you xx

Stopsnowing · 10/10/2026 23:52

I think you are angry with yourself.

WhisperGold · 11/10/2026 00:56

I didn't really understand a word of that.

SixtySomething · 11/10/2026 01:01

I may be dense but I don't actually see what upset you so much that you moved out.
I also don't understand about the talk, why he would say such things to you.
Also the story is terribly long. The way it's written seems somehow a familiar style of writing, something I've seen before numerous times?
I think if some raw emotion broke through into the writing, it would read better.

This is why id never have that convo with my husband. Married 35 years. I was told by a friend a couple of years in that he never wanted to marry me. Ive just kept on.
Who knows? Is he high functioning autistic too?

That person is categorically not your friend.
