39 years stolen by kindness, I don't know where to put my rage or process

MoonSilverwing · 09/10/2026 23:44

In June I lost 39 years of a partnership, through what turns out to be the crulest kindness I have ever experianced. Not by a bad man, a kind man, a man who loved me in his way as a friend. A man who, after 10 years together, was offered two choices, neither of which would have taken me out of his life.

We had been togther 10 years (since I was 18 and he 23) We had known each other as friends since I was 13 and he 18. At 28 I said I wanted to have children with him. I said I understood if he didn't want children (he'd said as much before) and if that was his choice then I would go to a sperm bank. However if I did the latter, then he and I couldn't be a couple anymore but I would always be his friend and in each other's lives if he still wanted.

He thought about it for a week and then said, ok, lets have kids together. I thought that meant he loved me like I did him. I thought he hung the moon and stars and, I don't know, I never imagined he didn't want that life with me, he said yes right?

Right. Wrong. The kindest man in my life was it turns out a people pleaser. He knew how protective I was of being able to make my own choices in life. He knew, he knew me.

3 children and 2 months off our 39th anniversary together I sat him down to talk. Really talk because he was quiet man. Were there red flags during those years? Absolutely. I thought it was me. why did he never reach for me first, why was it always me? why did he think me carry our child made me unattractive, he never said but I could see it. I thought a man would see the miracle, our child, growing inside me and a man would find that beautiful. So when he didn't, I thought, ok, it's me. I'm not pretty enough, skinny enought (pregnant!) I'm too strong a personality, I'm not loveable enough. Anything as long it was my fault, because the alternative was unthinkable. if I was enough, why wasn't I enough.

I worked, supported the family, paid the bills, not because I wanted to be in control, because he never took notice about that stuff. No one was going to fight for me, or even better, stand by my shoulder and fight with me.

A kind man. A great father, patient, all you could ever wish a father was, that is what he was and still is. I should also say, a very high functioning autistic man. I never knew that for years, I discovered it slowly, so slowly.

The talk. Simple, I asked direct questions about us. What I learnt was this. He thought loving me as a friend was the same as being in love. He never really desired me, I don't think sex ever meant much to him whoever it might have been in his life. When I gave him that choice all those years ago this is what he did. He sat with it. Then he made a the decision that my choice to be a single parent wasn't good and so he agreed to have children with me. He never told me, never indicated anthing at all. he let me believe he wanted it, he wanted us and a future. He didn't, not like that. He is a man that stole at a minimum 29 years of my life and truth to be told 39 years. He is a man who gave up his entire life as well, because he didn't think being a single parent was good. That's it. The whole truth.

I moved into the annex, he helped me. I still support the family, pay the bills. The house is for our kids, that was always the plan. they are high functioning autistic but two are still at home and I need my family to always have a safe place they can just be themselves in. I will continue to do this because that is who I am.

For him, nothing has really changed. The house is there, we live there only I sleep in the annex. I still do my thing and he still educates the youngest. Only difference is my sleeping/living location which is in the garden.

I have so much rage inside me and I have no where to put it. I cannot put it on him. it would be like whipping a puppy. He made a choice because he's a kind man and a people pleaser. I cannot find an outlet but I need one. Something, anything but I'm so full of hurt, rage and I feel like I'm beeing knocked to my knees everyday. I shove myself up and power through, go to work, help others because it's my job and I love it. Then I keep falling to my knees and I'm as so tired of fighting but I don't know how to be anything else after decades of fighting for everyone. I get, go down, get up and all the while the rage consumes me with nowhere to go. All I can do is write it down to release the pressure valve, that is why I'm here.

Not because I think anyone can fix me but because I need some human contact that see's me, after so many decades of not truely being seen I need just one human being to see me and say it's ok. That I'm enough. Not enough for him, I know I'm not, I just want to count somewhere on this earth and know I'm seen.

thank you for listening.

What is this load of self-pitying rubbish? Take some responsibility for your own decisions for gods sake.

UbiquitousPistachio · 10/10/2026 12:51

What on earth is this nonsense?

You have him an ultimatum
He has shared 39 years of marriage and family with you
Then you sat him down because he is quiet
Now you are in the annex continuing your stable family life because you didn’t like his answers but don’t want to leave

Where is your personal responsibility?

All this “moon and stars” and “fall in to my knees”????? Give over. Either you are dependent on AI or you are a total drama llama.

Some marriages drift apart and it’s sad and hard to process but don’t turn this into some big story about DH deceiving you.

Gemilo · 10/10/2026 13:05

With respect, why isn't he sleeping in the annexe? Especially as you support the whole family.

Aluna · 10/10/2026 13:06

I can’t believe the number of people on the thread who are falling for his twaddle.

She didn’t pressure him into anything. She like most women, wanted kids and said: if you don’t want kids that’s fine but I’m off to get me some.

He didn’t want her to fuck someone else. So he married her and had kids.

And now he’s saying he never fancied her and he married her from charity to ensure she wasn’t a single parent.

I’ve never heard such great buggery bollocks in all my life.

Any woman on this thread whose husband said that would be pissed off to say the least.

Yes ok OP’s a bit over dramatic but that’s par for the course on here.

Quite.

cowandplough · 10/10/2026 13:18

Don't know what to say except concentrate on the positives. Your wonderful children, the happiness they have brought you. You need to divert your rage. Is sleeping in the annex helping especially if he is not interested in sex
Sorry that's all I can offer.

Because it is her who wants to change the sleeping arrangements, not him.

dottiedodah · 10/10/2026 13:27

I think when u look back at 40 odd years ,you are tempted to say why? and see the whole as imperfect. Most people married this length of time will think this .In truth , people find Marriage is convenient and gives each partner stability and a home (cheaper to share than live alone!) Of course some of the lucky ones marry the love of their lives but many dont .If u look back at sections like when DC are small it seems like they are the centre of the world ,as they get older less so obv .This is natural and to be expected really.

Not sure random men, or any man, is going to br the answer.

She wants to be desired and wanted. That's what this is really about I think. Other men can indeed give that to her. She just needs to move on. Go overseas on her own, have a few flings. Then she will feel better about the whole thing and maybe they can even work it out. But she has to get that out of her system first.

Why would he be sleeping in the annexe? My dh earns 3x my salary, doesnt mean he gets to boot me out of the house if he decides I don't love him in the right way.

Bitsostuff · 10/10/2026 14:28

@BrickMaker yes, and emotionally supported and understood. And those are totally valid things to want and strive for.

@MoonSilverwing by all means move on. If his best is not good enough it's fine to look for more. I just think your levels of anger, recrimination and self-recrimination will harm you if you are not careful.

Well that's simply not on the cards for everyone.

Some things you cannot have, especially if you made choices that meant you had other things instead (children).

Live with your choices.

Whole things sounds much more like a middle aged man's wailings about why his wife doesn't love him enough, or in the way he wants be loved (ie more sex, or acceptance of his fetishes) and why it's her fault that he isn't happy.

If we wouldn't accept this from a man, I don't see why we should accept it from a woman.

Bitsostuff · 10/10/2026 14:36

I disagree. Yes its a midlife crisis but I actually think it's fine to reevaluate once the kids are grown up and decide you want something or someone different. Better than living the rest of your life in ever-growing resentment.

Obviously the grass is not always greener but I think thats something people get to decide for themselves.

Peachie31 · 10/10/2026 14:48

Gretalpetal · 10/10/2026 03:28

I think people pleasers are selfish. They do it to avoid discomfort within themselves. They could be honest but choose not to be honest. It’s not done out of kindness to others.

This is a wild take.
Could it be true for some people? I guess so, but ultimately for a lot of people it comes down to genuinely wanting to make others happy

DiNozzoComingBack · 10/10/2026 14:59

I think you have every right to be angry. And hes not kind. He should have left you to live your life. You probably would have found someone.

Meanwhile, why are you oaying all the bills? Why are you in the anex? Sounds to me like this man had a nice easy life and didnt want it to stop. Even just the original friendship sounds odd to me - 13 year old and 18 year old aren't friends.

You need therapy yo explore this because currently you feel like hes a nice man so you dont have the right to be angry. I dont even think hes a nice man.

ChuffinCharlie · 10/10/2026 15:10

I’m sorry you are going through this. It is hard but hopefully you will come to see that the decades with him will also have given you a lot. Stability, love (albeit differently to you), your beautiful children.
I have recently left my husband of 25 years as he could not cope with my absolute zero sex drive and didn’t want to be married to me if I couldn’t change that. I tried everything, counselling etc. I had 10 years of serious illness and can’t take HRT. Basically I felt that ‘I’ was not good enough without the sex, and I couldn’t cope with that forever. Am I sad, yes very, but I also now have a certain amount of peace in my mind. I wish you the very best of luck. Enjoy Italy, it’s amazing. I’ve just had my first very solo trip which was also to Italy.

Breadcat24 · 10/10/2026 15:17

Well apart from saying poor me what are you going to do about it?
You seem to have been tolerant of this for years?
You presumably love your children so that was a positive in your life not "x years stolen".
If you do not love him and he does not love you sleeping in the garage is not going to solve this

Grammarnut · 10/10/2026 15:27

In what way has he not loved you and the children? He has given you his life even though it was not the life he chose. Presumably you have been happy? Why did you put him in the position of having children with you when that wasn't what he wanted? Why didn't you go and find someone who was 'in love' with you, not just who loved you as a friend, which a better basis for marriage, btw, than being 'in love'? That feeling lasts about five minutes and frequently runs off at sight of a nappy bucket. So he didn't find a pregnant woman fanciable, at least that is what you think, he never said it. But he did not run away, become unfaithful to you in any way. You have built a home together. In what way is that not love?

People pleasers are incredibly selfish. So I want to offer you this view. It is not because they are for the greater good. It is because not doing what someone else wants makes them deeply uncomfortable, so to protect themselves, they people please. Regardless of the consequences to themselves and others.

He has stolen a lot from you. You deserve to feel cherished.

Please get some therapy. I hope you find your angry, move on in your love life and discover what it feels like to be truly seen and wanted.

Totally agree with this.

Go overseas and have a few flings ? of all the very dubious advice dolled out on MN, on almost any topic under the sun, this just about takes the biscuit,,,,I mean, what on earth could possibly go wrong

Grammarnut · 10/10/2026 15:30

ThatCyanCat · 10/10/2026 10:43

She wasn't wrong to say she wanted children so she'd walk if he didn't. What was she meant to do? Stay and be miserably, unwillingly childless? At 29?

But I think it's interesting that she said she'd go and use a donor, not seek another relationship with someone who wanted the same things she did.

So she opted for a relationship where the 'in love' bit (the hearts and flowers) were all on her side and her DP loved her as a friend and was father of her DC and loved them all.
What is the matter with you all? He has shown love. Friendship is a better basis for marriage than a Romeo and Juliet affair (and that play is not in the least about romantic love but the consequences of unregulated relationships and feuds) which lasts five minutes. He has stuck with her and brought up the children. There a women the world over who would give their eye teeth for this, a man who is there and builds a home with them.

The annexe might be a peaceful private space where OP can arrange everything as she wants it, and go to the main house for meals and family activities.

It must have been devastating to hear what he said to you. But he didn't steal 39 years of your life, nor you his. He gave you 3 children, companionship, love, security and stability. The most passionate sexual chemistry I ever had with anyone was the most violent relationship of my life. Life is not like the movies and most of the married couples I know are in coparenting friendships with a bit of sex thrown in if the guy feels like it (and often he doesn't care much). You need to grieve what was lost but appreciate what you do have. And go out and start meeting other men.

Why does she need to meet other men? She has a partner who gave up his life for her. I think she - and lots of people - don't understand love, which is caring for someone, being with them, sharing a life with them. It's not the passionate stuff that generally ends in tears.

You should never have had kids with this man surely??? I never understand people who force something that isn’t naturally there - this was the biggest mistake!
