After being totally abandoned by stbxh back in January, selling the house and living in a friend's spare room since April, my and my little cat are moving into a tiny little flat tomorrow that I managed to buy.

I'm absolutely cacking it about living alone for the first time at 40, but know it needs to be done.

It's been a long road to get here and the support I've received on MN for the last 9 months has been phenomenal. Just wanted to drop this little post to let people know that it's not easy but it DOES get better. There's light at the end of the tunnel!

I'm sure you'll find it an exhilarating experience when you get it made all nice and homely and just how you like it. My exH was utterly vile and I married again and that went tits up for different reasons (we are still friends). Since the kids left home, I live alone and I've never been happier. I have my cat and dogs and I love having a 'party for one' with just us! I make a tray of nibbles and I place it on my gold (ancient M&S) tray, which I still love, with a glass of vino, and I'm so happy and at peace. I don't have much disposable income, but I have my own space and it's bliss 🥂

Me and my dc have been in our "new" house for a year now, and I've overcome challenges too numerous and overwhelming to list here but OVERCOME THEM I HAVE and it's brilliant.

Today is my day off and I've got a wash on, done some decluttering and generally felt at peace.

18 months ago I had a lovely huge dream house but shared with an abusive man. His arse could be diamond studded and his cock made of solid gold but no man is EVER living in our lovely, cosy nest. It's small and it's often broken but it's all mine.

Congratulations!! When I've talked about leaving my husband has no concept of why I would rather live alone (with dc) than live with him. To not be beholden to someone and have that control is the dream!

Are you starting from scratch or do you have furniture to take with you?

Starting from scratch as a proper adult knowing what you like and don't sounds quite exciting.

I would paint everything white and have white furniture but with pops of bright coloured accessories and soft furnishings and art work.
A small double bed - big enough for you and a cat, but not too big it takes up too much space.

If there are trigger points of the day when you wobble, you could intro a new ritual to turn it around and make it positive. A wind down yoga routine before bed, an aromatherapy bath, putting your fave music on loud, getting into a good new book. I also find listening to podcasts out loud around the house is comforting. I’m really enjoying Michael Rosen’s podcast Word of Mouth on BBC Sounds at the mo.

There will probably be moments of sadness OP and it’s important to feel them and acknowledge them. But there is much happiness to be had too. You sound like a good egg and I think you’ll be just fine xx
