Anyone know why this board seems so bloody basic?

I guess it is something that has been bothering me for a while but i have never asked. Why is it so behind the times guys?

I don't want it to turn into an 'all-singing-and-dancing' flashy ad-filled nightmare like some others - but surely they can up-date it a little so we don't have to type stuff like smileys in and other basic things that are too numerous to mention?

I know there is some discussion topics occasionally about the changes that people would like to make to it - but i am confused as to why it actually hasn't been updated to move with the times before now.

There doesn't seeem to be any presence of staff/moderators either - apart from deleted posts. (Not that it is sophisticated enough to show who they are anyway....) It just seems very strange to me as i work for other websites that are not the fanciest out there - but are technically miles ahead of this.

Finance?

I got the daisy chain! It's still here, sitting on my lap. Withered, but still here!

The last gasp of summer ...

"Am metorphorically standing beside pointy with said brush, saying "bring it!" "

ok

an feeling uneasy

pointydog · 21/09/2007 21:38

at the trumped up assertion that 'cause there's a gang of you, you are therefore correct and giving a pasting.

I like being the sole voice of reason.

I farkin hate eric. He pissed off right royally, didn't he

Desiderata · 21/09/2007 21:40

Pan always speaks in metaphors, Pointy. He's a figment of our nightmares imagination.

JeremyVile · 21/09/2007 21:49

Pointy - I think Pan was defending you with his big, stiff DIY implement...

so Pan is the Glasshopper of mn?

DaDaDa · 21/09/2007 22:29

Bugger, I'm always late for a ruck. I like MN the way it is apart from having to 'flip thread' all the time because I'm always late for a ruck.

Oh, and quote and edit would be handy too.

Don't think that the OP or title was particularly confrontational anyway. Sheesh, don't get so defensive!

pointydog · 21/09/2007 22:33

I think the tech must be a regular munter's mum or something

Good grief - this has certainly run away since i last looked.

(Err - what's a ticker by the way?)

I'm not criticising the board as such - just asking why it has remained like this when most other boards have up-dated themselves with features such as quote, edit, and other features such as shhowing who is on-line and such.

I guess you lot have given me the answer - you don't like change and would see any changes made as an attack on your beloved board.

I shall go get my coat before i get lynched for asking any more inappropriate questions that can be misconstrued................

I still don't understand why this was posted in the Blokes bit of MN, not Site Stuff. Unless it's because we pretty little things can't be expected to understand such big butch Y-chromosomal stuff as the internet?

Blandmum · 22/09/2007 10:11

this is a ticker

They get out of hand. On some sites people have two or three different tickers at the bottom of each posting.

that, with avatars that are INHO too big for comfort and Blinkies, the board ends up too 'busy' to read with comfort.

And people leave these things on all their posts, so you have to wade through a mass of stuff that yu might have already seen dozens of times before.

It gets tiresome, IMHO

I run a message board myself, and while we do have avatars, the size is limited. the smiley facility is easier, and we make links in a different way (not that much easier tbh)

oberall if I had to choose from MN, or MN with more facilities and it ending up like babyworld, I'll take MN, for the good of my retina!

fryalot · 22/09/2007 10:11

oh eric me dear, you did get a bit of a flaming, didn't you?

Blandmum · 22/09/2007 10:12

Nothing big or butch about the Y chromosome MI, it is a weedy little thing!

It has to be basic because otherwise I'd ruin my manicure

fryalot · 22/09/2007 10:33

It has to be basic or it would ruin my pedicure

pointydog · 22/09/2007 10:33

It's basic because otherwise all the pretty pretty colours would just turn a girl's brain to mush.

EricL · 22/09/2007 14:17

My God MB - i very nearly vomited over my keyboard with that sites colour scheme.

Tickers do seem a little bizarre and 'needy'.

I agree about the flashy ads and ridiculous colour schemes - i work for a board myself and it is fairly basic and simple and i like it like that. There is a happy medium i guess.

I shall sit here and simper a while into squonks warm embrace......

......feeling better already.

I came here from another parenting forum when it went all-singing & all-dancing. It was fine as it was before & a lot of people stopped using it when it changed. I'm partially sighted & all the tickers etc were doing my head (not to mention my eyes) in. They did change it back a little after getting a load of complaints but I don't think it's nearly as heavily used now as it used to be.

btw a lot of the complaints involved the little signature 'quotes' as some of the TTCers were putting in way more info about their cycles than most people off the TTC boards wanted to know - including how many times they'd done 'it' so far
