Anyone know why this board seems so bloody basic?

I guess it is something that has been bothering me for a while but i have never asked. Why is it so behind the times guys?

I don't want it to turn into an 'all-singing-and-dancing' flashy ad-filled nightmare like some others - but surely they can up-date it a little so we don't have to type stuff like smileys in and other basic things that are too numerous to mention?

I know there is some discussion topics occasionally about the changes that people would like to make to it - but i am confused as to why it actually hasn't been updated to move with the times before now.

There doesn't seeem to be any presence of staff/moderators either - apart from deleted posts. (Not that it is sophisticated enough to show who they are anyway....) It just seems very strange to me as i work for other websites that are not the fanciest out there - but are technically miles ahead of this.

Finance?

Not that there is anything wrong with bump pictures, just not sure I want to 'share' that much

It is a scientifically proven fact that the use of nausea-inducing language (eg 'hun' (non-German sense)) and txtspk increases 147% each time a fancy feature is added.

callmeovercautious · 20/09/2007 18:42

At least MN is readable, some sites are so slow to post messages as they are moderated I get bored and leave before I get a response. Also the layout makes life easier, you can BF and read at the same time well not you OP but us Lady BFers!

Blandmum · 20/09/2007 18:43

blinkies!

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Please god noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

lulumama · 20/09/2007 18:44

what everyone else said

except for EricL

pointydog · 20/09/2007 18:51

lol at the lofty opinions of the 'content of the messages'

pointydog · 20/09/2007 18:52

Up the Eric!

MrsBadger · 20/09/2007 19:44

the trouble with sigs and avatars is they appear on every single one of your posts which in a long conversational thread gets eyestabbingly repetitive.

I like the MN compromise of having a profile page where one can post sig-type quotes and an avatar-type pic that people can look at if they like but which doesn't interrupt the flow of conversation.

morningpaper · 20/09/2007 19:50

I saw one recently which was a massive graphic that said:

205 days and 4 hours until I see Meatloaf in concert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd rather know my date of death TH

Blandmum · 20/09/2007 19:52

he's a vegetartian now, you know......

Look at the blinkies, if you dare

LOL

Kathyis6incheshigh · 20/09/2007 19:55

Signatures are so annoying - someone puts a joke or a quote at the bottom that they think is funny and maybe it was, once, but by the time they've posted 20 times it is decidedly not.

WigWamBam · 20/09/2007 19:59

Meatloaf a vegetarian, you mean?

Surely that would be Nutloaf then ...

Blandmum · 20/09/2007 20:00

Yours could be I [heart] the dalai Lama

Kathyis6incheshigh · 20/09/2007 20:30

Martianbishop! Shhh! I thought everyone had forgotten

pointydog · 21/09/2007 00:12

and what's with this asterisk every single word to make it bold? Why on earth does that still seem to happen on mn?

That is really clunkity. Are you all happy with that?

makemineadouble · 21/09/2007 00:18

eric good for you!! I spend all day making website holders happy!

sometimes this site drives me mad. x

pointydog · 21/09/2007 00:19

ah, here comes the cavalry. hello makemine

makemineadouble · 21/09/2007 00:21

just answering original post hello anyway

oggsfrog · 21/09/2007 00:39

The board is "bloody basic" because we like it "bloody basic".....now "bloody bog off".
If you want a more high tech board then go and set one up.
I for one am staying here.

Pan · 21/09/2007 00:40

Has the temperature round here just dropped a few degrees?? Just how far are poster's tongues down their throats?? Good question Eric, though I've nothing to compare MN to though..

fairysnuff · 21/09/2007 00:45

I have just read through and I notice that the OP has not returned??

I think it is fine the way it is. I have tried others and just did not click with them. Hav been on Mn for about a year now and I like it the way it is too.
DH has another site he likes but it has all the blinkies and the signature bits. It's just too much!

Pan · 21/09/2007 00:49

Eric is a fine poster, and hope you all haven't pissed him off.

Happynow · 21/09/2007 00:55

Can someone tell me how to open a thread? Can't work it out.

JeremyVile · 21/09/2007 00:57

Can you blame him?

He asked a very valid question and has not only been told to bog off in a dozen different ways, he has had the MUM of Mumsnet emphasised for him(why? if we absolutely must put up with men, they should at least have the good grace to question nothing and be eternally grateful?)AND he's had a derogatory comment about the size of his manhood.
I know this isn't the most serious of threads and I dont want to over react but I cant help but think how we would all react if it was a woman asking the same question on a predominately male site and being called frigid or bucket minge or bee-stings-for-tits...

You know, that kind of witty repartee

Classy.
