Anyone know why this board seems so bloody basic?

I guess it is something that has been bothering me for a while but i have never asked. Why is it so behind the times guys?

I don't want it to turn into an 'all-singing-and-dancing' flashy ad-filled nightmare like some others - but surely they can up-date it a little so we don't have to type stuff like smileys in and other basic things that are too numerous to mention?

I know there is some discussion topics occasionally about the changes that people would like to make to it - but i am confused as to why it actually hasn't been updated to move with the times before now.

There doesn't seeem to be any presence of staff/moderators either - apart from deleted posts. (Not that it is sophisticated enough to show who they are anyway....) It just seems very strange to me as i work for other websites that are not the fanciest out there - but are technically miles ahead of this.

Finance?

find the topic you wish, and then click on 'add new thread', and away you go...

Happynow · 21/09/2007 00:59

Thanks!

Pan · 21/09/2007 01:01

"Just how far are poster's tongues down their throats?? "... that's obviously for the other site I frequent, along with "Reckless Eric"... How far in your cheeks reads slightly better....

JV - exactement, mon ami.

JeremyVile · 21/09/2007 01:02

I did wonder about that one Pan, I did wonder...

Pan · 21/09/2007 01:04

Freudian.... As my buddy occassionally reminds me, 'it's been a long time, hasn't it?!!'.

welliemum · 21/09/2007 02:02

Yes but yes but

Eric asked a perfectly reasonable question, but look at how he did it. It was bound to get people's backs up.

If he'd posted saying, "I'd really like to have clickable smileys, does anyone else think this would be a great idea?" he'd have had a lot less grief.

Eric, the board layout isn't simple because no-one knows or cares how to improve it, it's simple because it really works. The conversation flow on here is brilliant.

I would be horrified if MN mutated into one of those boards where every post takes up a whole screen because it's so full of avatars, pictures, tickers, animated smileys and farking stupid witty signature quotes.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/09/2007 02:57

However the answers were phrased, it was still a resounding "NO" to any changes, tickers, avatars, signatures, blinkies or heavily present moderators.

Such an overwhelming response can be pretty intimidating but thats just the way the cookie crumbles on this particular issue.

If anyone wants slightly more flashy and heavy moderation - Netmums is your man/woman/thang.

If you want self-edited posts, easy access to smilies and less moderation - go to BMC.

oggsfrog · 21/09/2007 07:23

Not being a member of any of the all-singing, all-dancing boards I hadn't actually realised that this one was basic in any way.

Having seen some of the sites with flashing lights and tickers etc I just thought that this one was classier .

pointydog · 21/09/2007 16:59

The question is perfectly reasonable. The over-reaction is surprising.

pointydog · 21/09/2007 17:01

welliemum - eric asked in a perfectly reasonable way. The 'grief' is completely undeserved.

hunkermunker · 21/09/2007 17:34

"Anyone know why seems so bloody obtuse?"

I don't think it's a particularly well-phrased question.

I like my witty discourse unframed by less-than-witty signatures and blinking smilies.

After all, if you want that sort of tosh, you can go numerous other places on the interweb. Nothing is stopping people posting wherever they like, is it?

I like the plain look - it means no distractions.

As for the Meatloaf concert ticker, MP - I'd want to take my eyes out with a fork if I saw that posted over and over again

TheHerdNerd · 21/09/2007 17:51

I think that MN is a perfect example of something simple that works very well, and would only be worsened with "improvements".

The simple layout is very easy on the eye. The typing in of short sequences of chars to change fonts and display icons is very intuitive, and means you don't have to move from the keyboard or message box to get them.

The absence of avatars and all that bollocks means that people are a lot more imaginative with their names, and more prepared to change them and play around a bit.

I like it. And I'm a bloke.

So there.

pointydog · 21/09/2007 19:45

Eric's thread title is a little confrontational, perhaps, but then titles often are, to grab interest.

His op is very polite. Have none of you read it?

And why all this' o go and post elsewhere then'. No one is saying they don't like mn. They're just not impressed with the design. That's a a big difference.

Slubberdegullion · 21/09/2007 19:48

Hey pointydog, are you needing a pair of \ / these?

I'm happy to bring mine out and cover your flank if needs be.

Slubberdegullion · 21/09/2007 20:00

Ahem, on re-reading my last post (and to those who do not know of the kung fu arms symbol: \ /) it might appear on first glance that I was offering to do something possibly quite rude to pointydog. I do not and have not and will not.

I apologise to pointydog for any embarrassment caused.

Thankyou

pointydog · 21/09/2007 20:01

whey hey! Begads, hands off my flank, slubber.

I don't really know why I'm continuing with this thread. Maybe I should sweep out with a \ /

Slubberdegullion · 21/09/2007 20:02

\ /

pointydog · 21/09/2007 20:02

Aha. Yes, hence my riposte.

Take that, you die-hards \ /

pointydog · 21/09/2007 20:03

\ /

(ok, out safely now)

MarsLady · 21/09/2007 20:05

I would imagine as EricL has been an MNer for some months now that he's big enough to take it pointy.... though of course I'm sure he'll be happy to have you onside lol!

Besides....he'll understand the benefits as he's nappy changing and winding his wee one whilst posting witty ripostes on MN

Heathcliffscathy · 21/09/2007 20:06

mars please come and see my gorgeous french rugby boys picture...i KNOW you will appreciate it

hunkermunker · 21/09/2007 20:08

There's only a couple of people not impressed with the design. The vast majority like it. There are other places online that have avatars and tickers and nauseating quotes that people hope mark them out as witty or a bit edgy or different but really, really don't - that's why the "try somewhere else if you don't like the style here" comments, I would imagine.

Miaou · 21/09/2007 20:10

hunker - need you on breastfeeding please!!!

pointydog · 21/09/2007 20:11

A couple of people on this thread and about 6 storming in to defend it.

I've brought this up before and been flamed. Not conducive to an open chat.

Aitch · 21/09/2007 20:14

okay, blah blah blah to eric, i think his question has been well and truly answered, the poor sod. we like it the way it is. it was a fair question, although lol at the way he posed it.

back to the bump pictures... is it unsisterly of me to wtf??!! at this? apparently there's one up on her mum's front room wall. oh god i hope she's not a mumsnetter. if she is, then i have an apology ready...
