There are quite a lot of football fans on MN, and also loads of football-haters. If we hide here in Dadsnet, none of the detractors will find us. But if they do, they are welcome to come here and moan.

You don?t have to be male to post here, of course. (No-one would say women can?t post in the Dadsnet section, just like no woman would EVER say men aren?t welcome on Mumsnet?)

Footy fans please sign in with

Could someone clarify to me, or link me to an article which does, HOW this Keys/Gray private conversation was recorded, then leaked to the press?

The mic was left on when it should have been off (or so they thought). No one has come forward saying who leaked it but obviously someone who has an agenda, knowing the damage it would cause. You could say the same for Ron Atkinson as well, was that not leaked?

BelfastBloke · 26/01/2011 06:35

Have you seen

I find it far worse than the video Andy Gray got fired for.

Truckulente · 26/01/2011 07:10

I'm not defending Keys, but if secret recordings become common place at work wouldn't a lot of people get into trouble?

Saying things about colleagues or bosses,or something that can offend, it getting recorded and then being anonymously handed over.

I say risqué things at times that I wouldn't want put on YouTube that wouldn't go down well.

They're being slowly stitched up.

BelfastBloke · 26/01/2011 07:41

I say plenty of things that I wouldn't want broadcast. Not sure I say them at work, actually, but it's possible, given I work with friends.

But there is the symbolic aspect of this to consider, not just the individual issues. This will be a spur towards a more equal society, which is why Sky is forced to sack them both.

I'm seeing the word 'Misogyny' used a lot on here to do with this (and other things)

Has this word changed its meaning or replaced the word sexist?

I always thought Misogyny meant the hatred of women.

BelfastBloke · 26/01/2011 09:48

And you don't think calling a woman "it" is about the clearest example of misogyny there could be?

Using "Would you smash it?" to mean "Would you fuck her?"; how can that be anything other than misogynistic?

OP posts:
Truckulente · 26/01/2011 10:37

I think it's sexist and seeing women as objects, I don't see it as hatred.

BigGitDad · 26/01/2011 19:26

Hearing that Andy Gray has consulted his lawyers has made me wonder of he has a case for wrongful dismissal. After all the video of him were leaked then he was sacked as a result of the leaks. You'd be pretty pissed off if your employer treated you the same way.

Truckulente · 26/01/2011 19:28

He was warned about his conduct.
And then sacked about something that happened before he was warned.

He does come out of this as a bit of a knob though.

BigGitDad · 26/01/2011 20:06

Absolutely no doubt he has behaved like a knob. But I get a feeling Sky have handled this badly.

gingercat12 · 26/01/2011 20:20

BelfastBloke My understanding is that Sky wanted to get rid of Andy Gray, so they leaked the tape. Whoever did it was playing with their own job, so must have had the gaffer's consent.

I'll try to remember never to sue the Murdochs.

Truckulente · 26/01/2011 20:26

It does like a stitch up.

Truckulente · 26/01/2011 20:27

It does look like a stitch up, I mean.

gingercat12 · 26/01/2011 20:29

What I would really like to know is why did they tap the phone of this sorry little man when they could just record it all at work?!

Truckulente · 26/01/2011 20:34

I'm sure it'll all come out.
Gray will probably end up getting a pay off.
And he'll get another job.
Life's not fair.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 26/01/2011 20:50

I think it's possible to agree with BelfastBloke that the recorded conversation was misogynistic and with Truckulente that it was a stitch up - after all, Murdoch and Sky are not known for their deep commitment to feminism and women's rights.

Liverpool, btw! Dunno who DS will end up supporting - Exeter City, poor lad, if he ends up supporting a local team.

Did anyone see the Guardian's interviews with random men-on-the street seeing if any of them could explain the offside rule? Some hilarious stuff there.

Truckulente · 26/01/2011 21:01

Exeter have a good rugby team.
I player at their ground once in my youth.

Anyway as a FA qualified coach I made a point of knowing the offside law, it is a bit of a nightmare though.

And we've had some great female refs this season and some crap male ones, I've not heard any sexist comments and if I did I'd soon put them right.

In my experience most footy fans don't know the offside law.

My favourite law is the LBW law in cricket that really sorts out who knows what.

eeore · 26/01/2011 21:08

I realise that to defend Gray and keys is heresy, but I do wonder about the culture in which they worked - female presenters in nuts, this kind of conversation being common place - and why a week after Gray threatens to sue them, these tapes start appearing.

As for why they might have tapped his phone - probably because they could. The NOTW was only a bit part player in all of this, it seems the Mirror and the Mail were far more active - seems they were all at it, and if it gets proved they are facing two years in jail - if the police don't lose the file.

Not that that has anything to do with the all the papers inciting the mob

eeore · 26/01/2011 21:09

So as Richard Keys might say...

Who's going up and who's going down?

gingercat12 · 26/01/2011 21:10

I've seen the interviews Grin

As a matter of fact, my top-top favourite team isn't English and neither is the team I hate with a passion.

I would probably have trouble explaining the offside rule in a meaningful way. But I am pretty sure there are many things Iknow better than Mr Gray.

BelfastBloke · 27/01/2011 16:16

Hey, congrats Gingercat. See you at Wembley?

Who is the team you hate with a passion? Would that logically reveal your favourite non-English team?

Not quite sure what David Lammy put in his tea. I had a quick think about the ramifications of his claim.

Shepherds Bush Rangers
Parsons Green (formerly Fulham)
Fulham (formerly Chelsea)
New Cross (formerly Millwall)
Upton Park United

As for Arsenal, who took their name from being an Army team, I guess they'd have to become "Limited Company" or something.

Crystal Palace could be "burnt greenhouse".

eeore · 28/01/2011 18:51

good point.

Does anyone know who is paying for Lammy's proposed legal action? - assuming that he is just doing it for the publicity.
