Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. It looks treacherous out there!Shock

Froome will need his own Bike

EndoplasmicReticulum · 22/07/2016 20:21

Ah, it's good to see Jensie. Was a bit scary out there today. Does G get points in the league if his bike makes it across the line with Chris Froome on it? (probably not, to be honest).

Callmecordelia · 22/07/2016 21:13

Chapeau Drama, regained the Yellow Jersey!

DramaAlpaca · 22/07/2016 23:15

That was a dramatic stage, scary stuff on that last downhill.

prettybird · 23/07/2016 09:45

G's tweet is hilarious https://twitter.com/geraintthomas86/status/756526252702494720 - a true super-domestique who knows his bike is the best size for the team leader ShockGrinBike

Next year G will have learnt to "like" riding on asymmetric rings Wink

ThisPanCanCan · 23/07/2016 10:19

That was sooo funny. I've told him his bike will be down Saint Gervais Market. That's what they do round there. Bastards.

prettybird · 23/07/2016 12:04

What is David Millar wearing on his head? Hmm

AtiaoftheJulii · 23/07/2016 15:22

Peter Sagan's tanned thighs, glistening in the rain .... ShockGrinBlushBike ... Now that's what I call cougar bait!

Sorry to lower the tone Grin

AtiaoftheJulii · 23/07/2016 15:30

Tbh, I'm surprised Ned hasn't rhapsodised over Peter's thighs yet, he's clearly completely besotted with him.

prettybird · 23/07/2016 16:25

I could barely watch the descents - peeked out through my fingers.

ThisPanCanCan · 23/07/2016 16:44

I normally go to make a cup of tea while they descend in the wet. Today I stuck with it..and realised exactly why I normally go to make a cup of tea at that point.

I see Atia is making a bid for the 'blue' jersey.Grin

AtiaoftheJulii · 23/07/2016 16:53

In Freya North's Cat, which I'm sure you've all read (except Pan, probably a bit racy for you, my dear!), I'm pretty sure (haven't read it for a while) she says that Cancellara has the best thighs in the peloton. I reckon Peter has taken that title these days Grin

Dh and dd decided to watch on the penultimate descent today - spotted them just as Pantano went past in the lead. (They are the two yellow and black blobs just by his back wheel, lol!)

I only caught the last 1/2 hour of live coverage & may miss highlights. What did Sagan do today? ITV presenters were going on about some riding Sagan had done today. I know PS got overall Most Combative rider of the tour, too.

ThisPanCanCan · 23/07/2016 17:25

Golden Thighs led the ride out up and down mountains. Despite poss saving himself for Paris he 'buried himself' to keep the pace up in the break away so that Kruesiger who was in the break could possibly get on the podium, as teams back in the peloton didn't seem interested. For a while it was working - the break had 6-7 mins for a while, but Astana picked up the pace. Selfless and heroic.Bike

lljkk · 23/07/2016 17:46

Thx!

Callmecordelia · 23/07/2016 18:37

Old habits die hard. David Millar is still my favourite. DH teases me by calling me Mrs Millar

Callmecordelia · 23/07/2016 21:56

The ITV cycling podcast is very funny again. They didn't have enough interviews so they did impressions instead.

MrSlant · 23/07/2016 23:01

Ahem, Spartacus STILL has the best thighs in the peloton. Sagan can have the accolade next year for now it is my baby's his. Love that book though, re-read it every year Blush.

I am finally above both of my teens in the MN league, yeeessss! DS1 Thinks he will take it back tomorrow, it will be a fine run thing that's for sure. I have more people high in the GC but he has Froome.

I'll look up that podcast Callme, sounds ace.

AtiaoftheJulii · 23/07/2016 23:38

My absolute, future-Mr-Julii favourite is the one and only motherfucking Jens Voigt.

I'm quite conflicted about Sagan because he reminds me of my son (the eyebrows and the drollery, rather than the thighs!). It's disturbing really.

MrSlant · 23/07/2016 23:50

They shouldn't be allowed to be so young really, there should be a law against it! When my future DH retires at the end of the season I'm going to have to give up fancying the riders altogether because it just feels wrong. Will just have to admire them for their sporting ability, which, obviously, is all I've ever done after all Blush Grin

The one and only motherfucking Jens Voigt is a legend. Does he have something like 6 kids similar to Boardman? Something very over competitive even there!

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/07/2016 00:05

They shouldn't be allowed to be so young really

I quite agree Grin Very inconsiderate!

Yes, Jens also has 6 kids. He seems like a lovely dad, and just think of all that excess testosterone ....

Callmecordelia · 24/07/2016 08:50

Is anyone else a bit glum today? It's nearly over. I've never found the Vuelta or the Giro quite as fascinating. Sad

FelicityLemon · 24/07/2016 09:21

Well have resurfaced briefly. This years TdF experience having been somewhat ruined by work Angry for some reason for the last fortnight it has been non stop with urgent stuff and last minute matters. So I am going to have to wait until my anual leave in a couple of weeks to catch up on Velon and youtube.

Roll on the Vuelta. The Tdf is king because the top guys race it Callme but as I love race days in the mountains and I'm a huge fan of Spain I enjoy the other two just as much but in different ways.

Callmecordelia · 24/07/2016 10:06

It's all bound up with sentimental stuff for me - I got into the Tour as a little girl in the eighties, watching it with my Dad on Channel 4 and it was lovely having that bonding time, just the two of us.

I tried the Vuelta a few years ago, but the commentary was dreadful and Gary seemed to be doing the links from a dingy locked basement. I've just found it not quite so spellbinding, I try every year, but somehow I end up skipping a stage here, and a stage there and then I just don't bother. I shall make more of an effort to watch this year, as I like mountain stages and Spain too. Is there usually a thread on here? Perhaps if there was another velogames league I'd be more disciplined....

ThisPanCanCan · 24/07/2016 10:42

This year's Tour has gone so quickly! It just doesn't seem like 3 weeks and a day since they were rolling out of Mons S-M, and Cav pulled on yellow. A LOT has happened but it;s all passed as fast as a Manx Missile.

Outside of Le Tour I prefer the Giro - partly the sadist in me admires the brutal thinking of the course designers, and partly because the Italians are just nuts for biking.
It must of been nice to have that thing to bond over Callme.Smile

We also have La Course today! My virtual g/friend, tweet buddy and future MrsPan Gracie from ORICA-AIS won't be in it today, as she is heading off for training camp in Italy prior to departing to Rio for the road race. She'll be super-domestique in the Aussie team but throws herself around quite a lot. All important information!
