Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. yes they've given Porte and Froome the same time as Mollema.

Callmecordelia · 14/07/2016 17:05

Gary and Chris will be writing this highlights show right down to the wire!

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 17:05

on the same day as Greipel attacks on a mountain stage! Just what??

MrSlant · 14/07/2016 17:07

BLOODY HELL!

MrSlant · 14/07/2016 17:09

Sorry, watching on catch up. Poor, poor Porte, just watching his face smash into the back of a motorcycle. Checking the GC and Froome's in yellow at the moment on the official tour website but the write up says he's lost the jersey. Must be having an interesting moment in the organisation tent getting this one sorted out.

MrSlant · 14/07/2016 17:10

Loved Greipel attacking.

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 17:10

Tell you what. The Vuelta has A LOT to live up to!Grin

MrSlant · 14/07/2016 17:11

It certainly does!

Callmecordelia · 14/07/2016 17:11

Team Sky have put an update on Facebook which says: "Thankfully the Tour de France organisers have credited Froomey with a new time, ensuring he retains yellow and leads by 47 seconds!"

MrSlant · 14/07/2016 17:16

Phew!

Well we all said Bastille Day on Ventoux would be something amazing Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 17:19

I liked a tweet that read " So discontent and outrage in France on the 14th July. Not for the first time." Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 17:24

From this thread's OP :
The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world.
Doesn't disappoint!

MrSlant · 14/07/2016 17:35

Grin Bike 🏃🏼Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 17:35

What I liked also was the way the ever polite Froome placed his damaged bike against a moto. Didn't trash it, didn't throw it. Placed it carefully so it wasn't damaged any further. What a guy.
He's surpassed Brad in my affections just for that!

And Sylvain Chavenel did our League name proud too.

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 17:38

And Porte could have given his mate a "twos-up" to the line surely!

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 18:15

I think Froome was channeling his inner Kate Bush there.

maamalady · 14/07/2016 19:16

It was incredible, wasn't it? What a bloody entertaining shambles. I just hope that the riders who tell aren't injured, it could really impact on future stages.

lljkk · 14/07/2016 20:05

Can't believe no one got very injured. Is Stannard ok after his crash?

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 20:08

I didn't see Ian S's crash at all, but so much has been over-shadowed, hasn't it? ITV finish with Kate Bush. Cool.

Gerrans has a broken collar bone. Poor Porte's face smashing into the camera lens. Ooooch!

Flanderspigeonmurderer · 14/07/2016 20:08

Wow I never expected to see that today! What a shame for all the riders, it would have been interesting what the results would have been had the crash not happened.

Callmecordelia · 14/07/2016 20:10

Froome was lucky not to be more seriously hurt if another following moto went over his bike frame.

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 20:10

Froome was going away from Quintana and he's really unfortunate to have only a minute's lead on him.

Callmecordelia · 14/07/2016 20:14

Yes, Quintana couldn't follow could he? And his attacks looked pretty weak compared to Froome, Porte and Mollema.

msrisotto · 14/07/2016 20:17

Bloody hell! What a stage!

Poor Porte looked swollen, in shock and close to tears. Fucking Quintana smiling as he crossed the line was really scummy IMO.

Were the crowd booing Froome? Because that would be harsh, maybe they were booing the UCI?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/07/2016 20:27

Why didn't the riders stop? They used to, when something like that happened, or did I imagine that?

I was very confused as watched the highlights to see them say at the beginning "Froome is STILL in yellow" with him getting booed and I could not work out what on earth had gone on!

Why did they boo?
