Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. Oh, that was a brilliant finish, loved it Smile Bike

Fab to see the four of them working together today, unlike yesterday!

Callmecordelia · 13/07/2016 20:14

That was extraordinary!

msrisotto · 13/07/2016 21:26

That was great, a really exciting fun stage!

I love how attacking Froome is being, however I am slightly concerned that Quintana's legs will be fresh when Froome's won't be for the Ventoux tomorrow....

msrisotto · 13/07/2016 21:48

By the way, if anyone isn't aware, there is a very active sub-reddit called Peloton which is really good. It has a race thread everyday and then a results thread after with loads of links to info about the stages, interviews and gifs of crashes, exciting moments etc.

Oh and here's an absolutely epic Everything you wanted to know about the tour, but were afraid to ask thread.

msrisotto · 13/07/2016 21:49

Those race and results threads are for today so there'll be new ones tomorrow. New thread for each day.

FelixFelix · 13/07/2016 21:52

Sorry been AWOL for a while. Has anyone seen the crazy wind up Ventoux today? I'll see if I can link the video.

FelixFelix · 13/07/2016 21:52

Does this work? twitter.com/richardjansen95/status/753279827273195521

maamalady · 13/07/2016 21:55

It was a brilliant finish, wasn't it? Really looking forward to Ventoux, and wondering if the new finish line shy of the top will make much difference. Quintana needs to really go for it tomorrow or he might as well go home.

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2016 22:12

Oh that was a brilliant stage! Really wasn't expecting fireworks, but that's what we got. It was so exciting.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 13/07/2016 22:57

Yes, husband went out saying "don't worry, it's just a boring flat stage I'll watch the sprint later". Ha.

Looking forward to Ventoux tomorrow, only wish that my children didn't need collecting from school.

FelixFelix · 13/07/2016 23:09

It's a shame they are having to cut it short though.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 13/07/2016 23:12

Yes I agree, although can't see there's much they can do about it, after watching that video of people going sideways on their bikes up there. Quintana has got to try something at some point, surely?

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2016 23:17

It is a shame, but it should still be a good stage. It might suit Dan Martin more that it would've done.

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 07:23

This Tour just gets weirder and weirder, doesn't it?

Endo - today just explain the natural priorities to the children. Then give them a map. Sorted.

ShutUpLegs · 14/07/2016 07:38

This is a cracking Tour - loving the risks that Froome is taking. Makes up for the daily grind of political nonsense.

My own team is looking a shocker. I allowed my heart to overrule my head. I am shamed by their performance.

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 07:46

ShutUp - I haven't looked at my so-called team for days. Suspect I'm firmly placed in the gruppetta, just in front of the wagon.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/07/2016 07:49

What is Cancellara up to? He only has 4 points.

Callmecordelia · 14/07/2016 08:36

I think Quintana really wanted to win Mont Ventoux - he said so in the rest day interview. The Sky tactics have surprised him, I think he just expected to be able to stay with Froome, but Movistar keep on being caught napping.

ShutUpLegs · 14/07/2016 14:58

Pan you are ahead of me.

maamalady · 14/07/2016 15:02

Yeah, you'd have thought that Movistar would have a few more ideas. Or more than "follow the yellow jersey" badly anyway.

I hope Ian Stannard is okay, that was a nasty impact. He deserves an apology from Gerrans!

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 16:25

WTAF???

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 16:30

You know how I said it just gets weider and weider?

The commissars can make a ruling but surely the riders can make their own decisions i.e. the teams agree to allow Froome and Porte and Mollemar a time allowance on the next mountain stage based on an estimation of what would have happened IF the crash didn't happen.

Or something like that.

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 16:33

and my spelling of weirder is getting fairly weird.

ThisPanCanCan · 14/07/2016 16:54

I have no idea what happened on the podium but it would be a really good idea if Yates accepted the cuddly toy and kisses, and took the yellow jersey in his hand and passed it on later to Froome.

but hey, that's the romantic in me again!Bike

Callmecordelia · 14/07/2016 16:58

Froome has just tweeted he's still in yellow.
