Tnogu!

Did you see the BBC4 prog about the above? I used to LOVE ES but not as passionately now.
We need a thread to discuss painters we loved when we were little and grew out of!

How are you???

Long time no speak, hope you're well.

DS off school sick so I'm going to be coming and going today from the computer.

Little mystery guest is doing well! 13 weeks and counting! I'm very happy but full of trepidation of course.

Have you your ladies today? How are those students behaving? And how's your Muse? generous?

big hug

I loved Egon Schiele when I was at art school, and Klimt and Hundertwasser...kind of grew out of it, along with Pre Raphaelites (had that Lady of Shallot on my bedroom wall)- I loved the Schiele nudesbecause of the confidence of the lines, really bold and strong - it used to influence my life drawing at art school.
Also loved the picture of girl with watering can by Renoir, which was above my bed as a little girl.
I was very into pop artists too.

Tnog · 17/03/2008 11:39

Hello, Ipa

I didn't see the programme unfortunately.

Don't have BBC4

I have had a passion for Picasso from about the age of 14.

Good to hear that all's well with you.

The students are all behaving very well, apart from dissolving into giggles when I use the word, 'breasts'.

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 11:42

MaryAnn,

I had the parapluies (sp?) on my wall and a massive collage of Impressionist postcards. Along with a huge Starsky and Hutch poster and David Soul poster to oh my shame.

I loved those expressionists when younger too. Schiele still looks shockingly modern to me now. Really modern. Is that so do you think? I love his drawings as well, full of anguish and strangely twisted. I still think Death and the Maiden is stunning. Did you see the bbc4 prog? All the different interpretations of that painting were fascinating - none had ever crossed my mind! The WW1 stuff etc. Also the original had her rear exposed and he gave in to a friend who said 'you can't do that!'.

I don't know what I love now really, I love Anthony Gormley and Frida Kahlo and am starting to look back at the Renaissance painters and my mother's beloved Rembrandt. I never knew where to start with Rembrandt and now I think I'm just old enough to start!

Love Gormley.

I really want to see his sculptures on the beach in Liverpool

< is it Liverpool? >

I also really like Anita Klein and hanker after one of her paintings.

love the colours and the subject matter.

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 11:45

Hell Tnogu!

Ahh Picasso! I still love him too.

for you, tnogu

Schiele scared me

his nudes are terrifying

(disclaimer: I was 16)

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 11:47

no,ipanemagirl - I missed it - maybe it'll be repeated ?
Agree with it all looking very modern - I think that about Bauhaus stuff and Charles Rennie Mackintosh interiors/designs.. I used to love Matisse too..now I'm not sure, yes to Frida Kahlo and Anthony Gormly ...love Eizabeth Frink sculptures, Henry Moore...love Singer Sargeant ...

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 11:47

Hello,
Butting in here. Think Gormley's men are in Southport.
Just yersterday was looking at art gallery website fantasising about affording something by some lovely new artists. Would have loved to see that that prog on BBC$. Must watch it on PC. I still love ES, but def went through a phase of forgetting all about him. So many gallery trips Would love to do on next trip to London, but I have to BABYSIT four terrors instead!!

tinylady · 17/03/2008 11:51

I was a bit obssessed with Goys as a youngster, I have cooled to him now ( still admire him, just not so intensely)
I like Georgia O'Keefe and Paul Klee now.

WowOoo · 17/03/2008 11:53

Saw fab Beryl Cook exhib not so long ago. They just make me smile so much and remind me to try to enjoy life!!
GO to see the Russians, it will be fab if you can.

WowOoo · 17/03/2008 11:55

Love Georgia o'Keefe and Klee too. Though am just a bit bored of Klee really. Who is Goys?? Did you mean Goya?!

Tnog · 17/03/2008 11:56

Oh thanks WowOo - I'm in Ireland and really want to visit Liverpool this year, it being the culture capital at the moment

I also used to like Raoul Duffy and Arthur Boyd

Well, I still do but at college I was very inspired by their use of colour

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 11:56

Sorry, Paula Rego!

Tnogu, no I didn't see your response! I'll try to find it. I was fed up with that dry poster and probably didn't go back online for ages. I'm so glad you empathised. I can't understand people who are so doggedly sort of rational at any cost. I just can't imagine life without mystery! It seems so sneering to look back at history and sneer at so many people as 'misguided'. It's just so improbable to me! So arrogant to think we've superceded all previous wisdom!

MaryAnn, I love Frink and Moore too and Craigie Aitchison is more challenging but I love that one of Turner going to heaven, I think that's CA isn't it? So much humour! I've always loved JSSarg too but always notice that he's snooted at by critics isn't he?

Also, chagall and Vermeer.

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 11:59

love the colour of this chagall so happy

OP posts:
tinylady · 17/03/2008 12:00

Wowwoo- just read that back- yes I did mean Goya

Tnog · 17/03/2008 12:00

I was very inspired by your posts, I truly was

Some things can't be explained.

I love Paula Rego's simple but sinister style - disturbing

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 12:01

is he,JSS I mean ? I love Carnation,Lily,Lily,Rose still,even now.
Is that Craigie's dog going up to heaven ? He taught fine art at my art school when I was there (I did graphic design) and was often seen with his bedlingtons
I also quite like Maggi Hambling

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 12:02

love this Chagall too

Wowoo did you see Anthony Gormley's Field?

I'd have LOVED to see the real thing.

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 12:03

thanks so much tnogu!

I have to go do spelling test with ds to reproduce school for him!

back later

OP posts:
Tnog · 17/03/2008 12:07

Hope he feels better soon, Ipa.

You're always so wonderfully enthusiastic about art, I feel rather jaded by comparison.

One last absolute love of mine is Lucian Freud.

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 12:07

Wowoo, Carnation,Lily,Lily,Rose was my favourite too - what a stunning painting. I think he isn't considered first rate by critics don't know why, not at all an expert just read a few sneering things about him over the years.

Can't find the painting of CA's Turner being taken to heaven
(bought the pcard at the RA in about 86!) but it's so funny, an angel is literally carrying him up into the sky. Maybe it isn't CA will have to check!
