Tnogu!

Did you see the BBC4 prog about the above? I used to LOVE ES but not as passionately now.
We need a thread to discuss painters we loved when we were little and grew out of!

How are you???

Long time no speak, hope you're well.

DS off school sick so I'm going to be coming and going today from the computer.

Little mystery guest is doing well! 13 weeks and counting! I'm very happy but full of trepidation of course.

Have you your ladies today? How are those students behaving? And how's your Muse? generous?

big hug

vxxxxxxx

oh, poor you - poor ds !
That woman's work is very interesting - reminds me of quite a few people- can see the Blake-ness, also a bit Chagallish

Tnog · 18/03/2008 09:34

oh and Ipa that's a real shame that you're going to miss the exhibition

Bye.....

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2008 09:38

Thanks for sympathy and happy shopping Tnog! And thanks MaryAnn too!
I may still make it b4 the end.
Have a good day, I have to go and open home school for ds maybe will write later if I can think of any more great loves.
Maybe we should play desert island paintings?
I'm already thinking about my list.... What do we think is a good number, 5?

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2008 10:15

Oh good the more the merrier!
I'm still thinking! I'm going to give it a good few hours before I commit.
I know if I'm not careful I'm just going to be jealous of other people's choices and try to change my mind!

Good start!

I can't believe you love Ardizzone! I found the complete Tim books compiled in one book in a 2nd hand bookshop two years ago and was reading Tim in danger to ds in bed yesterday! I was telling ds about cross hatching and shading and how he doesn't need to do that when he uses colour etc etc how funny!

I haven't started my list yet but am working on it! Will come back to you. couldn't open one of your links will come back later and try again. maths at homeschool now!

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 11:18

that post was deleted because my link had dh's name on it and he might have objected !
I love Edward Ardizzone - I'd also love a real Quentin Blake and an Axel Scheffler and a Posy Simmonds...

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 11:22

I must add Margaret Knott www.newashgate.org.uk/pages/exhibitors/thumbnails/3056.html - she was at art school with my mum and is her very good friend - I have a couple of her etchings - I think she is fab

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 11:23

The Stanley Spencer beach at Southwold is where I've been often and it just makes me think of summer afternoon on the beach, stiff salty towels drying...

Tnog · 18/03/2008 12:30

I love the Margaret Knott etchings, MAS, especially, Yarmouth 11.

I'd probably add Otto Dix, Kirchner, Paul Nash, Alfred Wallis, Paul Henry and Jack B Yeats to my list.

< off to think of more >>

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 12:35

Alfred Wallis - yes,definitely !

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2008 12:40

I think we should submit one named painting from each artist as our desertisland choice do you think?

I still can't decide but am working on my final five.....

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 12:41

ok !

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 12:42

shall we do a new thread for it to open it up a bit ? what do you reckon ?

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2008 12:44

whatever you think is fine with me!

I've just looked at Alfred Wallis - gorgeous don't know his stuff at all.

We could do Top five desert island paintings thread in culture vultures couldn't we? Shall we do ours first though??? I want to enjoy yours and Tnog's first!

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 18/03/2008 12:44

go for it though! I'm going to take forever to decide!!!!!

Hello MaryAnn - and everyone, hijacking.

I Love that film of Picasso- we saw a long version of him painting live at MIMA last year, it was so inspiring..

Alfed wallis for sure, Mary Feddon? Ben Nicholson? Bonnard would in be my top 5, Matisse?

Egon is quite tortured and bruised and agonised.....and pre raphs someone said to me (our mutual friend Mary) that it was like eating a whole box of marzipan in one go...

(What a great thread, thanks for alerting me Mary....)

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 16:26

don't forget Winifred Nicholson !

northernrefugee39 · 18/03/2008 16:29

Oh there you are! Yes Winifred's stark and domestic I love it.
Is that smithfiels print Edward Bawden? I love him too.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 16:34

yes, it reminds me of stuff my mum did in the 50s - they all wanted to be him !

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 16:35

oh my goodness - just thought of Eric Ravillious !

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 18/03/2008 16:37
