Tnogu!

Did you see the BBC4 prog about the above? I used to LOVE ES but not as passionately now.
We need a thread to discuss painters we loved when we were little and grew out of!

How are you???

Long time no speak, hope you're well.

DS off school sick so I'm going to be coming and going today from the computer.

Little mystery guest is doing well! 13 weeks and counting! I'm very happy but full of trepidation of course.

Have you your ladies today? How are those students behaving? And how's your Muse? generous?

big hug

vxxxxxxx

No he isn't very artistic but he is creative, if that makes sense

He plays piano and enjoys reading and loves words the sounds they make.

He also enjoys driving me even more insane

I've aged 30 years in the last 2 days, but that's another story

Definitely do a class.

I teach part-time, adults who put things on the back-burnrer whilst rearing families or because they just never thought they could really paint - they are totally inspiring

Tis never, ever too late.

Tnog · 20/03/2008 09:39

< sorry for any typos - I'm useless at typing, computers befuddle me >

DeeRiguer · 20/03/2008 10:22

tnog
i completely agree with your sentiment of art making some sense of the madness..and music too sometimes its all that keeps me sane!
glad you had nice evening the setting sounded reflective peaceful...

maryann i so must get out more and do my own thing!..
..infact i am off tomorrow under guise of getting ds birthday gifts so will at least duck into gallery for short time as am not a born shopper...
woo ooo i wasnt allowed by my parents to study art at school (you wont get a job doing that) wtf he was a welder!
it was the one place at school where i felt relaxed
i went back and did it as senior in my free time and i applied to photography school and got in and even had some exhibitions when much younger..
oh and have spent working life being involved with pictures photographics graphics and design
gee thanks dad..

i would so die for studio or spare room to do things these days..
as it is, its the kitchen table..with a ds who has short attention span..but its still fun..

DeeRiguer · 20/03/2008 10:24

that is a good idea a class
evening class..i am gonna chekc it out too woo ooo...

tnog hope you okay..

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 20/03/2008 11:47

I guess it was inevitable that I'd end up doing art as my mum went to art school and my dad studied architecture - he now paints the illustrations of how a proposed building will look and does watercolours in his spare time. His mother was a good watercolourist and also went to art school. I just drifted into it I suppose ! Ds is quite creative but in a more design-y way..he likes to draw a lot.
I am lazy though and never draw or sketch unless it's work - I used to draw all the time, on trains, wherever I went I took a drawing book, but that zeal has left me. A really good thing is a life drawing class - I loved those..really teaches you to look.

DeeRiguer · 20/03/2008 13:41

you know i think i will maryann, a class, a life class would be good for the discipline and the looking..
it's quite zen in a way to look that hard and long and carefully and then look again
looking properly, yes, i've missed that

and zeal, singlemindedness, youre right its vital ingredient and i miss that too

i need more proper me time me thinks..

Tnog · 20/03/2008 20:05

That's very true about the life class and it's great that you're going to pursue your talent, Dee.

This thread has made me feel a little uplifted after being a bit down in the dumps for the past few days

I lost all focus about a year ago and found it really hard to get down to the discipline of painting and working on commissioned pieces, gradually it's coming back thanks in part to people on MN, which is amazing really.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 20/03/2008 20:28

hooray - that sounds encouraging Tnog - it always inspires me when other people share an interest especially if they seem passionate about the thing..

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 20/03/2008 20:28

and go for it Dee !

DeeRiguer · 20/03/2008 21:27

thanks guys
and i think i will it will also serve to get me focused a bit on things other than domestic affairs and oot of the hoose as they say..
really want to do t'ai chi class again too so am going really wild here and throwing caution to the dogs, hey i'll do both..

tnog
glad things are better for you, i imagine it would be occupational hazard in a way to stay focused and creative, it must take alot to do so..
(am of course presuming this, spent all my time with other's artwork, with reverence and ...)
but when passion is a job too it would be hard i think

ipanemagirl · 22/03/2008 17:52

Hello Tnog and MaryAnnsmothered and all!
Still haven't caught up with reading this link but looking forward to it. Have mother arriving for Easter tomorrow, hope she's ok on the train in this weather.
Happy Easter to all, I'm going to roast a chicken here but am wondering if a sponge cake is quite Eastery enough? With cream and jam!

ipanemagirl · 22/03/2008 17:53

Also Tnogu, I played 'chess' and draughts with my ds today and he did truly drive me insane. I'm so crazy about him but sometimes.............. only he knows how to push those buttons!

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 22/03/2008 17:55

mmm, sponge cake sounds yum - we're having roast chicken too !

ipanemagirl · 22/03/2008 18:03

sainsbury's was so vile today and I got there parked up got into the place, clutching my bags and all.....

NO PURSE!!!!!!!

Had to go back, through the horizontal rain, long walk to car drive home, 10 mins, get purse drive back etc etc etc

Irritating!!

What are you doing for pud? I remain uninspired. My mother is a massive Catholic so I want to do her a special meal. She's spent more time in church this week than at home!

Hope ur well Tnogu? Is the weather grim there too? It's just cold and crazy here, sun, hail, rain, wind vile. The kind of weather to just EAT CAKE in!

Just remembered I also love Patrick Heron
any one else like his work?
I saw a fab retrospective at Tate Britain and am still annoyed I didn't get the catalogue!

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 22/03/2008 18:34

yes, like Patrick Heron...
and no,I hadn't thought of pudding. Ipanema - has your mum been to Mass for all her Easter duties ? I used to spend Easter with my grandma and we had to go every day..am hideously lapsed now, though have given up chocolate for Lent !

ipanemagirl · 23/03/2008 08:41

MaryAnn, my mother was still at church at 1030 last night, she's been there most of the week doing Lenten things, she's a reader and in the choir. When I spoke to her last night after the Easter vigil she had just taken an old boy from the parish home from Mass in the car (who has no tranport) but en route found that he had no food in the house, so they found a petrol station and got him some supplies before she dropped him off.
So when I spoke to her she was eating chocolate for the first time since ash weds and getting ready to come to us by train tomorrow. It's snowing here so I hope she gets here ok.
I'm lapsed too but occasionally go with my mother, Xmas etc. And I wondered about going today but I'd have had to go to 8.30 and that ain't realistic given the meal I've got to go cook!!!!
I think I still have a lot of affection for the church, my mother was always one who 'did' rather than preached. But I just can't take the patriarchy. It is just medieval to me somehow. I can't bow myself down to it! My back won't bend! My gender have the vote now.
Happy Easter and hope your chocolate is plentiful!

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 23/03/2008 08:43

Respect to you for giving up chocolate!!! I wish I had, I'm using my 'condition' to justify all manner of gluttony at the moment it is not dignified or clever of me

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 23/03/2008 09:47

wow, your mother sounds great - doing her Easter duties and putting it to practical use too...it's all very well being devout, but doing good things is better - she deserves much chocolate...hope you have a lovely lunch too and that she gets to you safely.
I go to Mass very rarely, last time probably last Easter..my grandma would be very disappointed.
My mum has just phoned to say Happy EAaster - apparently my dad and brother are sailing today in a race - brrrr ! Have had brioche and nutella for breakfast which was very, very nice ! Are you preganant btw, referring to your 'condition' ?

ipanemagirl · 24/03/2008 23:28

Yes 15 weeks yesterday, had all but given up hope of it so it is very welcome but terrifying on account of my humungous decrepitudinous AGE!!!!

I went to a play place with a friend (we were in the same babycoffee group thing 7 years ago) and our two big ones were off into the unknown and we could just sit eat and chat. Hope I find the energy to do it all again! If I carry on eating the way I'm eating they're gonna have to take me to hospital by crane in a truck.

But what I really want to do is go to art galleries!

Sailing in this cold, ouch that must have been freezing! Brave outdoor types. Do you sail too? I don't but find the image very glam.

Bedtime, mother abandoning me tomorrow to pursue her selflessness elsewhere! Unkind of her!

Speak soon.

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/03/2008 09:58

so,ipanemagirl, how old is that ?! I'm sure to be older than you ! You have one other dc , yes ? I only have the one ds,born when I was 38 ( am a very late starter !)
Don't know whether brother and dad froze on the river or not -they are quite hardy - I wouldn't fancy it.I used to sail a bit when a child and have sailed since with my dad but only when it was warm and sunny !!

I am off to deliver my latest piece of work later this morning, then tomorrow my new bathroom is being started - I am terrified ! I hate any change and disruption, plus we don't have another bathroom/loo in the house...my kind friend says I can run up the road to use her loo whenever, which is a relief !

ipanemagirl · 25/03/2008 13:21

MaryA I'm half of 86!!! The Horror! But I guess it was somehow meant to be and I be able to hunker down in the ball pits again if this little one actually arrives. I'm finding it hard to believe that it will though! I had accepted we were going to be the three of us and it we did not expect it to happen now after so long of trying and no result. This week I'm just remembering how HARD it all is when they're tiny, such hard, repetitive, lonely work! And I had smelt my freedom with ds being 7, well, sort of smelt it! I'm sure it's natural to have the fear, or I hope it is.

how organised of you to have new bathroom underway, I need to organise that too but it feels me with horror too.
Good luck I hope it all goes well and you're having a good day.

Hello Tnog if you are around! Grey and cold here but my chicken soup smells very fine!

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 25/03/2008 13:22

It feels me with horror?
I think that kind of thing is the result of chocolate overdose.
