Tnogu!

Did you see the BBC4 prog about the above? I used to LOVE ES but not as passionately now.
We need a thread to discuss painters we loved when we were little and grew out of!

How are you???

Long time no speak, hope you're well.

DS off school sick so I'm going to be coming and going today from the computer.

Little mystery guest is doing well! 13 weeks and counting! I'm very happy but full of trepidation of course.

Have you your ladies today? How are those students behaving? And how's your Muse? generous?

big hug

vxxxxxxx

Tnog! It's only because I'm so culturally dormant -it's always different if it's your work isn't it?
I think my artistic hunger is raging at the prospect of seeing the Russians this week.

I love L Freud too, they are so stark and uncompromising.

Don't know Maggi H will have to rectify that.

but if I could have one painting to keep in the whole world today I would choose this one!

that's lovely

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 12:14

I used to love Breughel (sp) - because my mum and dad had a big print - the snowy peasants one..
and how could I forget the fabulous Stanley Spencer

Tnog · 17/03/2008 12:14

That is lovely

Tis Vermeer isn't it?

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 12:15

and Velasquez

Tnog · 17/03/2008 12:19

I feel all uplifted now

Must go and hang out washing with images of Chargall and Aitchison in my mind - lovely

marina · 17/03/2008 12:19

I like JSS too and he is derided for being too society-portrait oriented, tut, what a sin a painter earning a decent living.
But my teen guilty pleasure was Tissot - those fabrics.
It's interesting how you do tend to outgrow the Pre-Raphs - a bit like not wearing Anais Anais any more . But still enthralled by the craftsmanship as opposed to the canvases (live down road from The Red House).
Current artists of choice for us at home are John Piper, Samuel Palmer and Stanley Spencer.
Also like Paula Rego and indeed Egon Schiele, as others have said

marina · 17/03/2008 12:20

Stanley, sigh. That Resurrection painting eh MaryAnn

Tnog · 17/03/2008 12:20

< sorry about the rogue 'r' in Chagall >

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 12:36

WowOoo · 17/03/2008 12:51

Have not seen Ant Gormley's Field sadly, no. Oh God - Stanley Spencer! Only have a few postacrds of his but love them.
Am glad if it rains today as my son and I are going to paint and print this p.m. Bugger the mess it will make! Ta for inspiring me and reminding me, you knowledgeable arty types!

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 16:06

How could I forget him Mary Ann??

for you maryann

I loved this Spencer so much when I was a teenager just adored it

Tnogu. love the image of you putting the washing out in your rural idyll! is it as pretty as this?

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 16:07

oh all 3 of those are lovely - thank you - I hadn't seen the lily one before - beautiful light

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 16:15

maryanne, did you see the Andrew Graham Dixon about Spain on BBC4? Tnogu you can see them on the computer within a week now on Iplayer I think.

It was so wondeful, particularly on Picasso. So was the Simon Schama on the power of Art.

But all these beautifully shot art progs with velvet voiced (and in Andrew G-D's case slightly sexy) presenters with their hypnotic music and sumptuous images just put me to sleep like some kind of drug! Even when I'm really trying to stay awake and am really interested in the subject! It's too hard! Then I wake up in the credit sequence thinking - b**r!

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 16:17

no, I'm hopeless - I miss everything good !

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 16:22

well I slept through most of them!! Unintentionally!

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 16:24

if I did get to see them I probably would too - I am always half asleep through Torchwood and Ashes to Ashes - anything after 9pm really !!

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 16:29

oh I've missed loads of Ashes to Ashes. Has that off the shoulder madam kopped off with the boss yet?????!!!!!

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 16:31

not that I saw, but could have been asleep at a crucial bit !

ipanemagirl · 17/03/2008 16:35

Is it last episode on Thursday, think it is.

They have to get it together don't they? Surely!

OP posts:
MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 16:51

must do !

Tnog · 17/03/2008 19:12

Oh I've just thought of another artist I was/am very inspired by.

Peter Blake.

I recently bought a Cd [Right Time, Wrong Speed 1977-1987] with a portrait of John Peel, done by Blake, on the cover.

A wonderful piece of art to prop on my desk whilst I listen to The Slits and The Undertones.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 22:32

yes, loved Peter Blake too - once sold him a picture frame (I worked in a framers for a v short time in Chiswick)
And the Slits - they were fab - saw them a few times

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2008 09:21

Love Peter Blake too!

Poor ds off again today and poor mater can't go see the Russians today! So sorry for myself! A bit sorry for him too!

I stumbled on an exhibition of Anna Maria Pacheco once and loved her work. She was artist in res at the NG in London for a year. She reminds me of William Blake for some reason. Oh, there's another one!

OP posts:
Tnog · 18/03/2008 09:32

That's really funny because Talcy has a photo on her profile from a Pacheco exhibition

I like art to be slightly disturbing, slightly dark and surreal.

Hope your ds gets better soon Ipa.

Tis the Easter hols here and ds is in his element doing absolutely nothing, just pottering and chilling out.

Hi to MAS too

The Slits are on the CD I bought, the John Peel one with The Peter Blake cover - tis very good.

< rambling on >

I have to go into town now and stock up on supplies, hope you a lovely day and I'll hopefully get to chat with you later
