'Sad' Songs - inspiration please!

This is going to sound very weird.. but:

My band have been asked to play a gig at an underground festival.. basically, the set is to consist of 3 hours of songs that will (quote) 'make people cry, in an uplifting way. Songs that will get you in the gut (any genre)'

NOW - the examples they gave were things like

Bon Jovi - ill be there for you
Rod Stewart - Handbags and Gladrags
Oasis - Little by little
Robbie - Come Undone
My Chemical Romance - Black parade

There were more.. I cant remember now!

Anyway - I rand the lads and we're all quite up for it as its not really the sort of thing we do. We have 4 months to practise, and learn all the new songs.

SO - our 'homework' is to each come up with 30 suggestions, and then we'll choose 30 songs out of the 150 to do.

So - any help with my list would be HUGELY appreciated!

Flamesparrow · 06/04/2007 00:53

My Chemical Romance I Don't Love You Lyrics
When you go
Don't ever think I'll make you try to stay
And maybe when you get back
I'll be off to find another way

When after all this time that you still owe
You're still, the good-for-nothing I don't know
So take your gloves and get out
Better get out
While you can

When you go
Would you even turn to say
"I don't love you
Like I did
Yesterday"

Sometimes I cry so hard from pleading
So sick and tired of all the needless beating
But baby when they knock you
Down and out
It's where you oughta stay

And after all the blood that you still owe
Another dollar's just another blow

[ Lyrics found on www.metrolyrics.com ]

So fix your eyes and get up
Better get up
While you can
Whoa, whooa

When you go
Would you even turn to say
"I don't love you
Like I did
Yesterday"

Well come on, come on

When you go
Would you have the guts to say
"I don't love you
Like I loved you
Yesterday"

I don't love you
Like I loved you
Yesterday

I don't love you
Like I loved you
Yesterday

Briliant - Hoobastank is definitely the kind of thing I am looking for!

Its on my list!

We generally do 'older' stuff when we do covers (cash, the who, dylan, hendrix, joplin, waterboys, dolly p, elvis, etc) so this is going to be great fun for us!

evanescence is maybe a bit too 'emo', a bit too 'rock'..

We're more folky, punky, bluesy.. strange hybrid really!

will think tonight and come back in the morning.

odd as it sounds, hoobastank was our first dance song at our wedding

Flamesparrow · 06/04/2007 00:56

that one evanescence is a beautiful song though

BassMama · 06/04/2007 00:59

Everybody Hurts or Losing My Religion - REM
He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones (desperately sad song which won many awards by a country music icon)
Hit Me Baby One More Time (Britney Spears song, but listen to the version done by Travis)
Whiskey Lullaby - another heartwrenching country song done by Brad Paisley featuring Alison Krauss on vocals
True Colours by Cyndi Lauper
Don't Know Why by Norah Jones
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Constant Craving by KD Lang
I Still Havent Found What I'm Looking For - U2
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
Annie Lennox - Why or No More I Love Yous or Walking on Broken Glass
Crazy by Patsy Cline
Cold Cold Heart by Lucinda Williams
I Can't Help It if I'm Still in Love with you - Linda Ronstadt

The challenge of this is that so many of the songs are ballads. What style is your band?

Will get back to you later if I think of more...

aDad · 06/04/2007 14:29

Here Today Gone Tomorrow - The Ramones (in rare slow song moment!)
Hurt - prefer Johnny Cash version to NiN original
Jed the Humanoid - Grandaddy
I lied - a house

2 suns in the sunset - Pink Floyd
wish you were here - pink floyd

Not all so well known but definitely sad.

aDad · 06/04/2007 14:45
