Started this as we’ve veered off topic on the AG thread.

Just read about the Claudia Lawrence case as wasn’t aware of it. It has to have been the guy who goes into the alley on camera? He’s checking his crime scene surely?

Grandadwasthatyou · 23/01/2022 11:43

Timothy Mcoll, a Royal Navy sailor. He was 27 with 2 young children and another one on the way I believe. Ship was docked in Dubai in 2012, he went for a night out and was last seen getting in a taxi in the early hours of the morning to return to his ship. Never seen again.

Ben Needham, although I think the police eventually came up with a theory a few years ago.

OldTinHat · 23/01/2022 12:38

Damien Nettles is a very strange case. He went missing on the IOW about 25yrs ago. There was a BBC documentary about him which is worth a watch.

Tillymintpolo · 23/01/2022 12:38

Didn’t they think Ben had been accidentally killed by some workmen ?

BritishDesiGirl · 23/01/2022 12:45

Great thread!!

Asha Degree, 9yrs old went missing in the US in 2000. Never found. Very strange and disturbing

mollymcguire · 23/01/2022 12:52

So many in Ireland

Jo jo dollard
Fiona pender
Trevor deeley
And the one that always stood out to me as I was a child at the time Philip cairns, our Mam wouldn't let us out for weeks after it,

burnthur5t · 23/01/2022 13:02

@ToffeeNotCoffee

D. B. Cooper In America in the 1970's hijacked a plane and parachuted out of it with large sums of money in cash. Who was he ? What happened to him ? What about some of the money found on a river bank several years later ?
I've always found this case very interesting. I've read a lot about it and watched a few documentary's

I think he died out there in the forests and that his body has never been found, mostly eaten by animals. No money was ever spent

He jumped out of a plane wearing just a suit and into the cold and darkness with no idea really of where he was going to land

As for the small amount of money found, I think that got dropped/fell out of the bag when he landed amongst the trees. Overtime floods could have moved it/buried it

BorderlineHappy · 23/01/2022 13:04

@mollymcguire they think Fina Sender was a domestic.They just could never prove it.

BorderlineHappy · 23/01/2022 13:04

Fiona Pender that should say.

burnthur5t · 23/01/2022 13:10

The three men that escaped from Alcatraz has always fascinated me. I think they made it to land, a car was reported stolen in the area that night

A photo believed to be the Elgin brothers surfaced not so long ago.

Thatbliddywoman · 23/01/2022 13:14

@Roominmyhouse

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts and the cases which really stick in my mind are Amy Bradley, Asha Degree and Bryce Laspisa.

Bryce’s case was just so odd and he’s so distinctive looking it’s hard to imagine he’s still alive.

Must be so awful for the families just never knowing what happened and always having that glimmer of hope they could be found.

I dont know how to link to reddit but if you go to r/unresolvedmysteries and find this post... Not verified obviously but interesting.

I found the documentary interesting but ultimately frustrating. They didn't really uncover anything new, far less solve the case. However, it is good that it gave more publicity to the case and will have raised awareness. I hope the Nettles family find the truth some day.

Just recently locally a young woman - Alice Byrne went missing on New Year's Day. She left a house at 10 am and headed towards the prom which would have been busy with dog walkers and people having the traditional new years day swim but there has been absolutely no sightings, no one saw her after that house, like she just disappeared in to thin air. It's barely been reported outside of local Facebook as far as I'm aware. Locals set up search parties but police asked them to stop. There's also a young man missing from a similar area since the same day. Police have ruled out a link. Again coverage is low so much so that I scrolled for a significant time through our local news page to provide his name but could find nothing. It's strange how we hear so much nationally about some cases and next to nothing about others.

Likewise. I heard about it on a visit to Alcatraz in 2010 and have read up on it since.

blahblahx · 23/01/2022 14:40

Lars Mittank is another one that baffles me. Although I do think the knock to his head caused some mental issues.

HPLikecraft · 23/01/2022 14:42

Re: escape from Alcatraz, the Casefile podcast episode "Escape from Alcatraz" is excellent.

Roominmyhouse · 23/01/2022 14:56

@Thatbliddywoman that is interesting!

mollymcguire · 23/01/2022 15:00

@BorderlineHappy yes I did hear that over the years, I think yet man Larry Murphy I think is name is if deffo suspect in jo jo dollard and that other lass that went missing although the guards could never get him for it

AuntMasha · 23/01/2022 15:08

The Yuba County Five. One absolutely baffling disappearance case for which I wish there was closure for the families concerned. What happened to Gary Mathias who has never been found? How could this have happened in the first place and why? None of it makes sense.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuba_County_Five

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 23/01/2022 15:12

I know their remains were found and there are theories about what happened, but I don't think we'll ever truly know what happened to Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers in Panama. The photos just add to the mystery.

AuntMasha · 23/01/2022 15:24

The Panama case is just tragic, but as you say, those photos….

DrSophia · 23/01/2022 15:41

Elizabeth Chau (22.11.79) and Lola Shenkoya (7.10.72) have been missing from the Ealing area for a considerable amount of time.

A.Kunowski had been linked to the investigation into the disappearance of both Elizabeth Chau and Lola Shenkoya but he died of heart disease whilst in prison for other dreadful crimes.

I just don't understand how people can go missing in the centre of a large town, in the day time when there is CCTV covering the area?

SunshineOnKeith · 23/01/2022 15:47

@blippishutup

I'm not sure if this was mentioned before and apologies if it has but the missing Malaysian Flight still a very big mystery and I really look forward to the day they are found hopefully alive and well on some remote island where they created a new civilisation. Same goes to all the people mentioned on this thread.
@blippishutup The strange and unexplained podcast does a great episode on this. It was most likely pilot murder suicide Sad

The captains Wife had left him, he was struggling financially and they found a flight simulator in his home with the last known coordinates of the plane before it went off radar so it does seem he'd pre-planned a crash in the Indian Ocean and turned off the radar manually

Yes Alice's case is a real mystery Sad I think one of the things that has limited press coverage is the lack of updates. There have been no new appeals, no cctv images, no lines of enquiry announced, so it's tricky for the media to report on.

I wondered if the police are being so tight lipped because they know something?

@BorderlineHappy
Re the Phillip Cairns case. I heard fairly recently that his neighbour had also disappeared 10 years earlier. I'm not sure how true that is though.

I was out on the night Trevor Deely disappeared, socialising not too far from where he was socialising. It was a dreadful night in Dublin - lashing rain and wind.
It was the first time I had seen a Missing Person poster. They were everywhere. His family and friends gave 100% to the search for him.
The grief must be immeasurable for those whose loved ones are missing.
