Started this as we’ve veered off topic on the AG thread.

@Missingindevon

Glynn Rennie went missing from Plymouth in 2014 after occupy Plymouth fell apart, he never liked me but it haunts me not knowing.

Every now and again I think of him, there has been basically no appeals beyond the original I don't know if he died or he just didn't want to be found? What happens if your not actually missing you just don't want to be in contact with your family and want to start a new?

I left home without telling anyone (clearly not missing, ransacked room, taken belongings) and was reported to police.

Police will try calling, visit the house and determine if it looks like suspicious circumstances.

Because the thing is, not every report is actually a missing person as we think of it. People get reported missing all the time.

If you speak to the police they will accept your explanation, or possibly pursues a case if they think your under compulsion.

(This was very rambly, ha)

My parents always used to talk about April Fabb, who disappeared in North Norfolk in 1969. Was never found.

blippishutup · 22/01/2022 23:44

I'm not sure if this was mentioned before and apologies if it has but the missing Malaysian Flight still a very big mystery and I really look forward to the day they are found hopefully alive and well on some remote island where they created a new civilisation. Same goes to all the people mentioned on this thread.

NoRaceInThisHorse · 22/01/2022 23:45

Sarah Benford, who disappeared from Kettering in April 2000, aged 14.
Her case never made the news as far as I remember, but they recently (November) were searching an area of land.

Jerome Thomas, went missing 21 years ago aged 15. There were reported sightings of him hitchhiking at a roundabout. One strange detail is that the clothes he was wearing were found in the wash basket the next day. His case was featured on a programme with Lorraine Kelly a few years ago.

Alex Sloley, went missing from Enfield. I think they looked for a possible connection between him and AG.

EllaMinnowPee · 22/01/2022 23:49

A few you may or may not be familiar with ...

Trevaline Evans

Ben McDaniel

Raylene Helsley

Steven Clark, missing from saltburn

There's explanations for all really - Trevaline they have a suspect, Raylene it was clearly her father and I believe arrests were made the other year re Steven.

Ben is a real rabbit hole so do have a read of that if you're interested

So many people 💔

Reading this thread is so sad.
So many families just waiting for an answer. Sending thoughts to anyone who has been affected by a loved one being missing.

Missingindevon · 22/01/2022 23:57

@lenorofavenor thanks 😊 good to know. Glad your not missing!

LaMagdalena · 22/01/2022 23:57

From what I have read about Claudia Lawrence, the police know what happened and who did it, but they can’t prove it as they don't have proof/her body, so they have to wait for 'loyalties to change'.

The Annecy murders were in the news recently, that's a case I've never forgotten.

LastChristmasIGaveYouMyHeart · 22/01/2022 23:59

Billie Jo Jenkins. Her adoptive father was found guilty but then cleared.

ButlerAndButler · 23/01/2022 00:30

What happens if someone who has intentionally gone missing is found by the police but doesn't want anyone to know? Will the police still tell their family even if requested not to?

EditButtonEdith · 23/01/2022 00:31

I remember a similar thread on here a while ago and a poster came on to say they were officially a missing person who had deliberately vanished to leave their family behind. So some cases it may be they don't want to be found. A man who worked for John Wayne gacy went missing and turned up about 30 years later admitting he just wanted to escape his life.

Tullig · 23/01/2022 00:37

JoJo Dollard.

ENoeuf · 23/01/2022 02:22

^^ that’s so sad to go missing and leave families not knowing. I can get wanting to leave and maybe in abusive situations it’s all you can can do but for wider family and friends it’s sad.

Not if they're a capacious adult.

Billie-Jo Jenkins, as a pp has said. Haunting.
This thread got me down a rabbit hole and although not unresolved, I find it so sad what happened to Sarah Paynes father. He couldn't cope. Awful for her mother to lose the support of her husband, and for their other children obviously.

Me too !

However, I understand one way of getting answers is to keep trying.

I remember the story of a British girl Lindsay Ann Hawker , who was murdered in Japan. Her Dad never stopped looking for her murderer. He spent lots of money going over there. Learned to ask the question, 'Have you seen this man ?' in Japanese and he didn't care if he looked like a crank.

He kept on. And on. For nearly three years.

The suspect was found. When the plastic surgeon he paid to alter his appearance heard about what happened.

The case went to trial and her Dad was glad he would never have to say, 'have you seen this man ?' in Japanese ever again.

Some cold cases are solved after many decades because people either can't or don't or won't forget.

I don't know.

Maybe the Police ask, 'can we just say that you are safe and well ?' or Can we just confirm to them that you have been located and do not wish to be contacted ?

Adults who disappear of their own volition do it for all sorts of reasons. The police will only take an interest if that person is vulnerable somehow i.e. their health, their mental state etc.

With no vulnerabilities an adult is free to live their lives how they choose

ToffeeNotCoffee · 23/01/2022 10:00

Steven Clark, missing from saltburn

I believe arrests were made the other year re Steven.

There was a documentary on t.v. about this last year. Very interesting.

I suspect the father knows more than he's letting on. He said, 'that's our story' his wife corrected him and said, 'that's the truth.'

His father was arrested but the Police had to back down because of lack of evidence.

Scottishnewbie2022 · 23/01/2022 10:18

Cheryl Grimmer - went missing from a beach after her brother took his eye off her for a second. She was 3 years old. This happened in 1969/1970 and they still don’t know what happened to her.

There’s a podcast about it on BBC Sounds called Fairy Meadow.

JollyAndBright · 23/01/2022 10:43

1000%

People that knew her have a good idea what happened to her, even the people she worked with know a lot more than was publicised.

The police know exactly who killed her, they just don’t have enough evidence to get a conviction.

ENoeuf · 23/01/2022 10:56

Claudia Lawrence is such a sad case. It sounds like there were groups of friends , maybe boyfriends and some jealousy? Two pubs involved and some reluctance to talk.

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts and the cases which really stick in my mind are Amy Bradley, Asha Degree and Bryce Laspisa.

Bryce’s case was just so odd and he’s so distinctive looking it’s hard to imagine he’s still alive.

Must be so awful for the families just never knowing what happened and always having that glimmer of hope they could be found.
