Would love to hear from others tackling this challenge.

I am...23,000 last year, but I managed to write every day of November, which was a major part of it for me.

MargaretThursday · 29/10/2023 12:22

I've done it the last few years, not sure if I'm doing it this year. I enjoy doing it, but have a lot on.

OctoblocksAssemble · 29/10/2023 21:35

I've never done it, but this year I do need to write 20,000 words in November for other reasons. I'm doing an advent story for my eldest, got 4 chapters so far, (aiming for approx 1000 per chapter) 20 to go. And guilt may propell me to do a simpler story for my youngest, even though she'll be much less fussed about it 😄

OctoblocksAssemble · 29/10/2023 21:40

I still don't think I could manage the full nanowrimo. Don't have the discipline

aletterfromseneca · 30/10/2023 10:32

I'm giving it a go. Never tried before. Not convince I'll succeed but I'm not fussed. I just want to get lots of raw material to edit or rewrite later as I work towards a book.

MargaretThursday · 30/10/2023 16:35

What I've found is getting ahead in the first few days, so writing 2-3k means that when you have low days later on you still finish it. if you start getting too behind it feels too much to catch up.

The other thing is don't delete anything, even if you realise in day 20 that something totally different happened in chapter 3; just rewrite chapter 3 as well and count both (you've written both so it isn't cheating)

But it does suit my style of writing which is to start writing and just see where it goes, and write approximately a chapter a day.

LaurieStrode · 30/10/2023 16:38

Thinking of it.

Luckydog7 · 30/10/2023 16:41

Oh meeee! I miss it every year so thanks for the reminder. I'm not sure about the word count as a fair amount will be rewriting/editing what I have already drafted. I have a few scene that I have in mind that are new though and I'm hoping to push ahead with brand new words and finish first draft of book one perhaps. I have no ending yet which is a problem...

CoodleMoodle · 30/10/2023 16:56

Me! I've done NaNo every year since 2011, plus the two Camp NaNo challenges in April & July. After the fifth or sixth one it gets a lot easier! I do my best to write 1667 every day, after the disastrous year when I had to write 8k in a day to catch up!

I much prefer to go in with a plan but this time I've got nothing... I was considering continuing my CNaNo from July, as I did leave it with a lot more story to write, but I don't really like doing that.

NanoTime · 31/10/2023 09:34

Good luck to all of us! Any tips from the seasoned pros? I’ve done very little prep but do have a rough outline in mind.

I'll give it a go, mainly because I'm stuck in a rut and want to feel there is something I've accomplished in 2023. I can't imagine it will ever see the light of day and I won't tell my family.

AdamRyan · 31/10/2023 14:16

I was planning to but I'm getting scared and have done no prep whatsoever!

MargaretThursday · 31/10/2023 18:12

@AdamRyan why don't you spend the first day or so writing your plan? It counts as words.

weefella · 31/10/2023 18:46

I'm going to give it a go.

I've done it a few times before but have only ever done the full 50k words when I haven't been working full-time.

If I make it to even 20k I'll be extremely happy.

SisterImpera · 31/10/2023 19:51

I'm planning to - although I'm not ready with respect to my plotting. And I'm in a really bad mood tonight so not a promising start. But I still want to.

Thank you! I did not know that!

FledglingFountainPen · 31/10/2023 21:45

I am! First timer. Very excited and nervous.

Thank you! I did not know that!

Anything can count.
You also don't have to put the actual writing in the site, you just tell them how many words, so you can decide what counts.
I normally go for anything connected to the story, so if I write a side bit about a character or similar then that counts, but a forum post doesn't.

I am! Just about to sign up now. And teen DD wants to join me, but she has a question: who will be able to read her novel, apart from her? We have tried googling and I think that the novel itself is private but your profile and anything you put in the forums is public...does anybody know if this is correct, please?

Nobody sees your novel apart from you! The website is just used to track your word count. You can fill in the biography, pick the genre of your novel, and so on, but it's all optional and you can make it all private.

All you need is a username and a title. it doesn't have to be the final title of course, I usually just write a keyword if I haven't got one yet.

LucyAnnTrent · 01/11/2023 11:54

Thank you @CoodleMoodle ! I've started writing it on Word. 392 words in so far, only another 1200 or so to do today!

NanoTime · 01/11/2023 12:17

I’ve written 882 words, almost the first half of today's target. Really I’d like to do at least 2000 words a day and end up with a first draft of a 20 chapter novel.

It’s so painful to write without editing as I go, cringing at every word. I can’t stop worrying about how much work it will be to rewrite later!

I've started this year after knowing I didn't have the time on previous years. Got a bit obsessed and I'm 4,000 words down, and planning to write a little tonight when my DP goes out. I have ADHD and my focus can be bad, so thinking if I lean into it on days when I'm motivated, it allows for those 'I can't write' days.

My planned story has already changed a fair bit as I've started writing, but I think that's okay

FledglingFountainPen · 01/11/2023 20:03

I managed 1800 words today! Pleased with that, but also aware I'm going to find it REALLY hard to write this weekend so I need to try and do even more tomorrow.

weefella · 01/11/2023 20:08

Well done everyone!

I made it to 1680 words but I have an event tomorrow evening that I can't miss so am likely to fall behind again.
