Does anyone else want to join me?
Failing that, has anyone else done it and managed the 50 000 words?

Yay! There's no giving up now - we're into the final lap now...

Just 5 more days to get my heroine out of a fearsome predicament and fleeing to freedom...

SouthernandCross · 26/11/2011 14:17

49028 words and counting....

GrendelsMum · 27/11/2011 18:01

Congratulations! Nearly there...

SouthernandCross · 27/11/2011 19:19

Yes I hit 50K yesterday!!! Grin
Am up to 51 392 now. I figure I need to do 60K to finish my story.

Congratulations, Southern Cross! A worthy winner after all your solid hard work and dedication.

How are you going, Cassie?

I've just hit 50,000 myself today, after really struggling at the weekend (lovely sunny weather, wanted to be outside in the fresh air). So that's my third Nanowrimo won!

I'm going to do my best to 'finish' the story by 30th November, but in the knowledge that it'll mean skipping quite a chuck of plot that's supposed to be in the final chapters.

SouthernandCross · 28/11/2011 09:07

Well done Grendels! I'm going to plod on with my 2k a day up until 60K so should be finished a day into December.

I'm on about 44000, only managed to get about 1000 words done over the weekend as I was working and my DH passed out on friday night and he spent most of Friday night and saturday in hospital.
I fell asleep last night in the middle of writing, still had fingers on keys when I woke an hour later :o
I have the next 3 days off work though so hopefully I will hit 50,000.
Well done you two, are we the only three that's made it all the way through.

GrendelsMum · 28/11/2011 17:52

I think we're the only three on here still going!

My DH sends congratulations to you both - I'm sorry to say that he pointed out (directly after I had been smugging about reaching 50,000) you probably had it quite a lot tougher than I did, because we don't have kids.

Best of luck for the final push, Cassie - hope your DH recovers soon.

MysteriousHamster · 29/11/2011 21:53

Hi - forgot about this thread, sorry, it dropped off my ones I'm on! I'm at 48000k now and confident I can finish tomorrow.

I'm very very tired though - it's been a hard old month and I'll be glad when it's over. I do think NaNoWriMo is great for motivation but it doesn't actually produce my best writing. It's nice in normal life to be able to stop for a day or two if you need to - then again in normal life it's easy to fall off the wagon, too.

Good luck to whoever's left pushing on :)

CassiePalmer · 29/11/2011 22:45

I've got just over 700 to go and should be able to do that no problem tomorrow, will just have to stick kids in front of telly or something :O

GrendelsMum · 30/11/2011 08:36

Congratulations all!

A warning from our local co-ordinator - try to get your words verified as early as possible today, before the servers go crazy with everyone trying to upload and verify.

I see Nano as a way of getting a first draft down on paper, definitely not as a way of getting my best writing done! In fact, I'm now horribly aware that this is where the hard work really begins, now I'm onto the editing.

Aaaaargggggggh. Not looking forward to that at all. If anyone wants to join an editing thread for support and tips, I'd be veyr pleased.

FiveHoursSleep · 30/11/2011 10:50

YY to an editing thread. I haven't finished my story yet. I need one more chapter of about 6K words.

CassiePalmer · 30/11/2011 11:17

I'll join you in an editing thread, I hate doing editing.
I may need to do a second draft with this one first though as it changed direction a couple of times, so though the basis of the story is there, the beginning can be shortened (it drags and drags as I built my character as I went) and the middle lengthened, I also want to get it to around 70,000 words. But really my story isn't ready to end yet so I still have the ending to write.
I find editing takes longer to do than the first draft.
Anyway will get on with my 700+ shouldn't take long as I left it mid scene.

CassiePalmer · 30/11/2011 13:35

And I'm done, finally!

FiveHoursSleep · 30/11/2011 15:22

Well done CP. I have to admit I did feel pretty proud of myself when I got to the winners page, even if it was a bit cheesy.

GrendelsMum · 30/11/2011 19:09

Congratulations Cassie and FiveHoursSleep!

Right, when shall we start the editing? They say you should give it about 4 weeks before you start to go over it again, don't they?

FiveHoursSleep · 30/11/2011 19:12

well, I'm going to finish this last chapter, then put together a time line and character profile.

I have things happening all over the place that need to co ordinate, and a couple of my characters are just sitting there doing bugger all.

THEN, I'll start to edit.

CassiePalmer · 30/11/2011 19:31

I'm proud of myself too, prouder of myself than finishing last year as I really like my story and I'm already trying to sort it out into a 'proper' flowing story.

Shall we leave of editing till January? That gives us a few weeks break (and means I can finish this and my uni assignment and Xmas shopping :o ).

FiveHoursSleep · 30/11/2011 20:27

January is good for me. Oh sorry, have changed my name- was Southernandcross, just to complicate things. I do tend to do that every month or so!

GrendelsMum · 30/11/2011 21:00

Okay, we're on!

That makes three of us to start editing in January. I'm also planning to sign up to a writing class to get some external support.

Like you, I've actually started trying to make a list of what I'm going to tackle on a first re-write. I'm planning to look for consistency in plot and characterisation, and to make sure the narrative arc is right - I think that the chapters may be rather out of proportion in terms of how long si spent on what. I also need to look for consistency of tone - it's supposed to be a little dark and bleak, but the last chapter I picked up at random was weirdly cheery in tone. That might be a task to be done on the second edit, though, along with dialogue.

In Dec, I'm also going to get to grips with using Scrivener for writing, rather than have a billion word documents.

FiveHoursSleep · 30/11/2011 21:35

I'm using mywritingnook. It's nice and simple, which suits me down to the ground.
My story is divided between 2 girls ; one from 2001 and one from 1901, so the language used has to reflect that.
I think I need a writing class too...

dabbler · 01/12/2011 12:49

Hi, I finished last night. My novel is pretty bad but I feel it has potential. I finished it before 50,000 and so started writing some additional stuff which turned out to be the best bit. I am now considering using the last bit as the first bit and changing all the scenes around so it goes back and forth in time. It was linear time before which helped me to get the actually story down but it feels deadly dull and plodding.

I have a MC character who just disappeared mid novel too! (Got bored with her)

This is my first time writing a story since school. I would love to join your editing thread, if that's ok, but must say i am not very good at keeping up with threads on MN so may be mostly lurking

FiveHoursSleep · 01/12/2011 16:02

Well done dabbler. Mine jumps around between centuries, so isn't exactly linear either.

MysteriousHamster · 01/12/2011 21:05

Congrats all! I'm only about halfway through my outline for my book, so it'll be a long time before I'm editing. I'm actually going to edit another book I've completed first (I just didn't finish it in time before Nano) and then hopefully I'll look at the Nano one with fresh eyes. December for me is going to involve a lot of reading, watching TV and playing videogames though :)
