Worried about Drumcree

I feel like an interloper here and apologies if this isnt in the right place.

im really worried about the decision over Drumcree and I can’t see it ending well today either way.

I have no time for Jamie Bryson or Carla Lockhart and it seems that tensions have been stoked on both sides.

My parents (and one set of grandparents) were a mixed marriage - my mum and dad moved to England in the 1960s, and my granny and grandpa moved back in the late 70s/80s once they retired. Im aware I don’t have enough if a real understanding, but I have enough to be worried.

again, im sorry if this is the wrong place or offensive.

@AInightingalethe orangemen wouldn’t eat the sandwiches from the nationalists. My neighbour owns a small baking business her bother in law is a member of the orange lodge near us. They apparently bring baked goods and sandwiches etc on 12th for the marches. He refuses to buy his from her because she is a Catholic and the elders wouldn’t like it. So he supports the local Asher’s (homophobes) instead. It’s ridiculous but we just laugh at how pathetic it is.

😮!

Well I'll have you know that the Protestants down South have the biggest houses, the most cattle, the biggest farms and the latest cars. Well that applied down the country anyway as my DP from the wilds of the North West always mutters. His family were on poor boggy soil back in the day, but you knew who the Protestants were by their assets!

The only other person with a bigger house was the priest, either CofI or RC. Always thus while the peasants scratched a living and lived in their cottages.

I'm from the wilds of the North West too and yes the family of 'the Big House ' were noticeably well off and a couple of other families but most were as average to poor as us Catholics really. Now that I'm thinking of it though a lot of them seem to have stayed in farming more than Catholic families, off the top of my head. Now there's a topic of conversation next time I'm back!

I did not know that Michelle O'Neill was now identifying as male😁

I suspect she proudly leaves her toaster on the counter while Emma Little-Pengelly has hers back in the press before you get a chance to take the toast out of it. They would lose votes otherwise.

Sorry I got the titles wrong.
Obviously people from there will know all about the toaster issue.
I was picturing the Secretary of State being caught out...

@MILLYmo0seim from North Antrim. As kids Catholics were told we needed to work hard and get a better education because it was the only way out. We had to work harder and smarter than our Protestant peers. Most of my friends are now professionals and those that were farmers or had family as farmers have left. The story here is that the best performing pupils are Catholic females and the lowest performing pupils are Protestant males. Take from that what you will.

I heard someone say the other day that for every protestant up a pole, there's a Catholic with a degree.

Can totally see how that applies to Catholics in the North. No idea what the acedemic performance of the two groups was south of the border when I was growing up then or now tbh, I presume its not even tracked here tbh. It could kind of been tracked when I was growing up in that many Protestant teens would usually travel to ( or board in) one secondary school, in my county anyway but its a pretty mixed school now

AInightingale · 29/09/2026 11:03

Someone quipped on Twitter once that for many young men growing up on loyalist estates, GCSEs stood for Gutties, Coke, Sash, Es, which was a bit harsh but does have a ring of truth to it!

I don’t agree that the thread is depressing. Most people on it think like you do and the other one thinks dinosaurs were mentioned in the bible.

I just wish that unionists would learn better about their own history.

Eg the American War of Independence was basically won by "Scots Irish". Ulster Scots. Former Lowlanders fleeing Scotland courtesy of the Monarchy.

About the persecution of Presbyteriansim by Anglicism.

About Wolfe Tone & the protestants who joined with Catholics in the 1798 United Irishmen Rising.

Abhannmor · 29/09/2026 16:39

Well it has been heartening to see unionists both online and in person supporting the residents of Garvaghy Road. Not surprised Bryant has legged it. Probably angling for an cushier job.

AInightingale · 29/09/2026 18:14

That's interesting @Abhannmor. I haven't heard anything about that, though I know an OO chaplain spoke out. Who are the unionists?

favouriteflowers · 29/09/2026 18:39

So take tonight in Hillsborough hosted by sec of state between garvaghy residents and Portadown ddistrict lol. The sos has the power to outlaw this march. Why is he not doing it???? Have the loyalists threatened violence? Is that why That wee prick Bryson was there?

pelara · 29/09/2026 18:51

It certainly takes the emphasis off Donaldson. I also wonder if there is a divide and conquer policy going on behind the scenes. OK conspiracy alert! You know, get them at each others' throats and they won't have time to riot about immigrants et al. The Parade Commision decision was bizarre, so it got me thinking..... and that's dangerous 😊

AInightingale · 29/09/2026 19:08

I know @celticnations. And about 20 US Presidents had Ulster-Scots lineage. So why the f* unionists bang on about the Orange Order and some dynastic battle over 300 years (where the victor was backed by the Pope) ago is beyond me.

favouriteflowers · 29/09/2026 19:13

@pelarai know I fell down a rabbit hole last night reading conspiracies about this ranging from Andy Burnham telling the Parades commission to slow the match so his sos could step in and save the day - except that’s not happening we have to ask why? Probably because Jaime wee loyalists mates threatens to spit their dummies and riot.

Notinmyname2026 · 29/09/2026 22:23

TUV Ron Mcdowell post about all the loyalists that turned up in support this evening and its a fecking ai image 😂

Tracey Magee gave Michelle a right grilling on the news there. The DUP won't be happy until sinn fein are prosecuted for attending the protest.

Twats.

The Bel Tel states that an agreement could be on the cards. 'Residents ready to accept offer if OO agree'
I'm trying to think how they could possibly reach an agreement over this. It seems fairly black or white to me. It's not like there is an alternative route. No doubt the OO will say NO to everything anyway.

pelara · Yesterday 18:34

What if both sides march together in peace and harmony, and the Garvaghy Road residents say the Rosary on the way. The OO could play their pipes and drums and a hoolie could be had at the end with traybakes and ham sangers galore.

BeanNaGealai · Yesterday 19:07

Or a one and done option might be acceptable. After all, the poor oul' OO just want to go home. I don't know where they've been for the past 28 years but it was obviously in the wilderness somewhere.

On a separate note, I saw an OO post on facebook about how the "ladies were keeping them fed". Says it all really, back with the dinosaurs.

Sure they're the "Lost Tribe" dontcha know.🙄

BeanNaGealai · Yesterday 20:49

And one of the most bizarre things about all this is they only marched on the Garvaghy road about 10 times in total. They moved there after they were shifted off their previous route so it's not as if it's even this sacred route they have been following for generations.

BeanNaGealai · Yesterday 21:00

Just heard someone from the OO being interviewed on Irish radio. Apparently, they have applied for permission to march every single sunday for the past 28 years!!
