Worried about Drumcree

I feel like an interloper here and apologies if this isnt in the right place.

im really worried about the decision over Drumcree and I can’t see it ending well today either way.

I have no time for Jamie Bryson or Carla Lockhart and it seems that tensions have been stoked on both sides.

My parents (and one set of grandparents) were a mixed marriage - my mum and dad moved to England in the 1960s, and my granny and grandpa moved back in the late 70s/80s once they retired. Im aware I don’t have enough if a real understanding, but I have enough to be worried.

again, im sorry if this is the wrong place or offensive.

Why would an anti catholic organisation kick up such a fuss to march down a road with predominantly catholics living there?

Given that poster is claiming they decided not to have a band, you are unlikely to get a straight answer. Their initial application included two bands but one of the conditions of the permission was no bands.

This is where the DUP could actually box clever and put proper effort into fixing the NHS with a particular focus on GPs and helping constituents access GP appointments. As it stands, I (and I assume many others) would be happy to pay €60 to actually see a GP (and I have done - private GPs here are booming and are popping up everywhere). Tackle real issues that matter to people, so that losing for example a free GP service that works actually feels like a loss.

Our GP system doesn't work in many places unfortunately, v difficult to find a GP that will take on new patients and long waits for appointments which then clusters up our A&Es

The nhs and gp system in the UK as a whole needs a complete overhaul, but NI in particular has longer waiting lists and fewer GP practices per patients than mainland uk. We also don't have the 111 service.

I believe this is true in a lot of places as my friends are scattered over the country and some find it very difficult but I somehow bagged the cream of the crop somehow and i can lift the phone any morning at 9am and be seen to that day. I actually worried for a while if I had a terminal illness they did not tell me about as they are so quick and thorough.

Anonanonanonagain · 28/09/2026 17:01

Sorry thought you were talking about Ireland itself not NI oops.

Yep anyone that feigns innocence on this are just as bad.

Tiny thing that makes me smile is you never hear 'Roman Catholic' down the end of the island I am on just catholic, usually you can tell who is Protestant by them saying 'Roman' first - well that and seeing where their toaster lives of course but that is a whole different thread ;)

So first minister what is your position on the toaster debate?
and watch him splutter. Um..i use the grill...?? Help

I've only just discovered about the great tray bake saga..
Apparently another indicator is the pronunciation of the letter H ?

Let's hope all these kind of things will be the most notable cultural differences going forward.

You are seeking logic where none exists.
There’s simply no end to the boneheaded cretination is there? They actually look even more pathetic with each failed attempt.

I did not know that Michelle O'Neill was now identifying as male😁

I suspect she proudly leaves her toaster on the counter while Emma Little-Pengelly has hers back in the press before you get a chance to take the toast out of it. They would lose votes otherwise.

Anonanonanonagain · 28/09/2026 17:41

Literally only waiting on them to stamp their feet and roll on the ground now in a tantrum. It is ridiculous.

The truly heartbreaking thing about all this is that these silly little humorous things [for the mystified: it's from a scene in Derry Girls where a gormless priest tries to bring Catholic and Protestan youth together by writing down all the ways they are similar - and they end up with a blackboard full of fundamental differences, like where toasters are stored, or who likes ABBASmile]
were the most talked-about cultural difference -

On the eve of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) conference, party leader Gavin Robinson asked members if there were any Derry Girls fans among them.
“You mean Londonderry Girls,” replied MP Sammy Wilson at the Friday night dinner.
Introducing the evening’s entertainment – an Abba tribute band – Robinson quoted a line from the “blackboard scene” of the sitcom, which addressed some apparent differences between Catholics and Protestants. Saying he wanted to dispel a myth, Robinson joked: “Not all Protestants hate Abba.”
Wilson proceeded to lead a conga line through the ballroom of La Mon Hotel in Belfast to Dancing Queen.

That's not a comedy skit on the telly, that was really the DUP leader, and it was on the 19th September 2026. Only two f*cking Saturday's ago - sorry I rarely swear but I'm so upset about how we could go from that to this, all because of some stupid parades commission decision.

The Fleadh in Belfast was remarkable for the very fact that it existed - 'Gaelic' culture taking over the capital of NI, in a bright colourful youthful musical and apparently acceptably non-threatening way, with lots of input from the Unionist side as well. Everybody seemed to have a great time. People said it was a vision of a future of mutual respect and even shared fun.

Nobody was denying that there were divisions and problems, but there were glimpses of better times.

It has been alleged that protestants put theirs in the press/cupboard and catholics leave theirs on the counter top but I don't know if this is truth or fable lol

I'm catholic and have mine on the counter (like any sane person)... but both of my sisters keep theirs in the cupboard.

Anonanonanonagain · 28/09/2026 19:07

I would be afraid it would set the house on fire if you had just used it and put it away. Absolutely irrational I know but thats why I wouldn't. I was raised catholic though too.

JaneJeffer · 28/09/2026 19:22

Nobody ever cleans the toaster trays except me so I dread to think of the crumb situation if it was going in and out of the press on a regular basis Angry

pelara · 28/09/2026 19:24

Well I'll have you know that the Protestants down South have the biggest houses, the most cattle, the biggest farms and the latest cars. Well that applied down the country anyway as my DP from the wilds of the North West always mutters. His family were on poor boggy soil back in the day, but you knew who the Protestants were by their assets!

The only other person with a bigger house was the priest, either CofI or RC. Always thus while the peasants scratched a living and lived in their cottages.

We call it a "press". 😊I'm still trying to figure out the origin of that word and why it's used instead of cupboard. Anyone know?

And my mother used to "go for the messages" not to the shop, oh no.

I’m the same. I’m very upset. GFA child. Had genuine hope that we were making meaningful progress to reconciliation. Now worrying my children will see the scenes I saw growing up. Knowing in ‘98 my parents were glad that the violence would come to end. This debacle has shown it’s all a veneer. The only grown ups appear to be SDLP and Alliance to a degree. MON has shown strong leadership and done as expected she made efforts to show a willingness to make unionists feel welcome. Struggling with the same thoughts for the unionist parties. I doubt this SOS knows what he is dealing with and I’m sure the PM has other priorities. To me I can only see joint rule and agreed criteria for a border poll with agreement both sides to start planning for a UI the only way forward. I would normally partake in jokes about toasters and 15s but we are not quite there yet I feel. All this said as a maintain the status quo and stay in the UK person.

Anonanonanonagain · 28/09/2026 19:43

My granny would say she was 'going on a message' and it meant she was having a hot toddy. We grew up with more languages than English and Irish around here 😂

I just saw a post with a picture of the OO eejits saying 'Enoch-ing'. Constantly turning up where you are not wanted 😆

I get the messages still. But I’m in my 60’s.

AInightingale · 28/09/2026 20:01

These Orangemen who are 'holding out' at Drumcree, are they the same lot from yesterday? Or are they working shifts? Is the church building open to let them use toilets, wash and get food etc?
It must be particularly galling for them to watch the local people pass round coffee and sandwiches and buns and know they certainly won't be offered any. 🤣

ColadhSamh · 28/09/2026 21:23

Loyalists now gathering at bottom of Garvaghy Road. The police and Parades Commission have caused this with their nothing will happen here.

favouriteflowers · 28/09/2026 21:34

@AInightingalethe orangemen wouldn’t eat the sandwiches from the nationalists. My neighbour owns a small baking business her bother in law is a member of the orange lodge near us. They apparently bring baked goods and sandwiches etc on 12th for the marches. He refuses to buy his from her because she is a Catholic and the elders wouldn’t like it. So he supports the local Asher’s (homophobes) instead. It’s ridiculous but we just laugh at how pathetic it is.

Piggywaspushed · 28/09/2026 21:41

Press in Scotland is a bigger cupboard in a bedroom or living room. Kitchen ones are cupboards or cabinets. We also do messages. Not sure about toasters. What does it make you if you toast on the gas grill??

Piggywaspushed · 28/09/2026 21:42

It's from linen press BTW.

Anonanonanonagain · 28/09/2026 21:48

They are making an actual holy show of themselves at this point. Idiots. Go back to the stone age and take your orange bibs with you you absolute prehistoric animals.
