@Lisanoonan sadly this isn’t an Ireland only problem. I think it feels more prevalent in Ireland as it’s smaller and media is consumed from a national source as much as regional, so we all know what’s going on across the whole country, straight away.

Its not an ireland only problem I agree. But it is an ireland problem. And I think there is a particular version of misogyny in Ireland that has come from the catholic church, telling men that they are better than women.

There's a lot of bad men in Ireland. I've met some absolutely shocking men

I'm sorry... and yes, there really are 😳

Over40Overdating · 13/11/2024 20:53

@Lisanoonan Yup - the CC does a great line in misogyny!

I remember once reading that Ireland is quite rare in that it has a matriarchy as well as a patriarchy. The reverence of the Irish mammy means that the work of caring (children, elderly relatives etc) is viewed as more important than it is in other societies. This means that we apparently have a slightly smaller gender pay gap, slightly more of the unpaid labour is done by men, we have more women in leadership positions etc.

Well we don't have more women in government than other countries do. I think that we are actually behind a lot of other European countries on that .

I would like to go on holiday to a female only island for a month!

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 11:19

That is so awful if it's true. I thought the Gardai were better than that.

If they're that corrupt, it's truly shocking.

I don't think they are or could gey away with this sort of corruption now and that's partly why everything is comi g out. However, I certainly could imagine this level of corruption in the institution back in the 90s. Standards for acceptable behaviour are clearer and higher now, at least in theory.

RIP JoJo.

I see her sister said that jojos nails were really long. And the scar on the man's face is exactly like two nails digging into him. It's left an upside down triangle mark.

I thought the scar was clearly caused by a ring?

Well no one knows for sure do they. But I've seen it mentioned online that it could be a ring.

Then I also saw online that jojos sister said that jojo had really long nails, and that she thinks the scar was caused by her nails.

Well exactly. No one knows for sure.

Yes. It's just it is a very unusually shaped scar.

After I read this, below, and I looked at the scar again, the more I think that the scar looks like it was caused by two nails digging into his face. Like the scar is nail sized, not like a scratch, but like a mark left from two nails making a triangle.

Here is an article from online

In a separate interview, Mary Phelan (jojos sister) revealed that Jo Jo was training to become a beautician when she disappeared and always kept her fingernails long and painted, which raised the possibility she would have clawed her attacker’s face in a desperate effort to escape. Phelan also hired a private investigator to visit the suspect's farm under the ruse of being a lost tourist looking for directions, and he said that the suspect had a very prominent downward pointing scar on his face that looked like a recent wound caused by a fingernail.

Lisanoonan · 13/11/2024 21:41

Here is the scar. I got it from an Irish chat forum.

It's already out there, but I have cropped the photo much smaller and removed any other identifying details.

Doesn't it look like it was made by two nails digging into his face?

She just made an observation. I agree with her.

The irish mammy culture definitely ruins irish men.

The amount of mammies you see running round after adult men. This makes the men think that women are just servants.

I believe george hook said that he was used to his mammy waiting on him hand and foot, then when he got married he expected his wife to do that for him too. She refused.

So you’re agreeing with pp that it’s women’s fault that men abuse and murder, is that it so?

The poster that I agreed with, didn't say that it's women's fault that men abuse and murder at all.

So I'm not sure why you came out with that?

She said that the mammies who wait on their sons hand and foot, train these men to then expect their wives to also treat them like that.

Poor JoJo. This thread has strayed. There is a huge amount of speculation here too. The way Irish mammies, of which I am one, are being depicted here is not nice. JoJo had a mammy and her 3 sisters Mary (RIP) , Kathleen and Nora are Irish mammies too. So are some of their children. There is no indication or suggestion that the person who was questioned or his mother fitted any of the behaviour mentioned here.

Let us hope that the arrest of the man in question is the start of a process which will result in answers for JoJo's family and I hope they will finally be able to bring her back home to where she belongs. The whole of the establishment failed JoJo and her family. Thankfully Irish society is changing. As well as looking back we need to look forward.

Christ. No one anywhere said #allirishmammies did we.

We were talking about the particular irish mammies that spoil their adult sons, and wait on them hand and foot.

I'm not sure where you got that we were talking about all Irish mammies

This is exactly what was said

What mammies don’t seem to get is, this treatment breeds contempt and hatred in their little princes that manifests as misogyny at best, abuse and murder at worst.

That’s what I objected to. I don’t know why you think it wasn’t said?

I mean, not teaching sons to be good around the house isn’t a great idea, and they need to respect women and be treated equally etc …totally agree there… but if someone is claiming doting mammys actually breed murderers it needs some supporting evidence imho.

I’d have guessed that abuse featured heavily in violent mens backgrounds (sometimes anyway)?? I haven’t looked into it either though.

In the words of Fr Dougal . I stand corrected . She did write that.

Her full post was this

"yup the king babies, pampered by mammy to think women exist solely to meet their needs! And surprised women no longer give them any attention because they are so incapable of being an adult.
What mammies don’t seem to get is, this treatment breeds contempt and hatred in their little princes that manifests as misogyny at best, abuse and murder at worst."

I was agreeing with the first part.

But I skimmed through it and I didn't see the bit she wrote at the end.

So to clarify my opinion: I think hat irish mammies spoiling their sons makes them into spoiled men who expect to be waited on. I don't agree that it makes them rapists amd murderers. In my opinion.

Well as you asked I think it's I appropriate to post it on here. I'm more concerned with justice for JoJo and her family. They've had their hopes raised and dashed so many times in the past. Let's hope this latest move brings results.
