new to this thread but after the Supreme Court ruling I’ve just been reading up on the Irish stance on all this and I’m so shocked. It’s so lax . I didn’t realise anyone can just apply and get their birth certificate changed ? Wtf like

Welcome to the TERFhood.
The ability to completely change your birth certificate and passport, the impact of women in sports but most importantly, the impact on basic safeguarding are the issues that peaked me.

RTÉ's refusal to talk about any of the issues annoys me. They pushed the Lydia Foy viewpoint over the counter arguments way back when and they've stuck to that ever since. John Charles McQuaid would have admire their obedient and conformist manner.

Puckeen · 20/04/2025 09:42

The UK hasn’t removed any trans rights, it has simply clarified the law. Where’s the clarity for the safeguarding of women and children in Ireland Norma?

That's a scary thought. What about safeguarding women?

Randomer27 · 21/04/2025 14:03

That article is a complete disgrace. It’s all “it’s OK lads we can get the women back in their box, the uppity bitches.”

Joolsin · 21/04/2025 19:50

Those links aren't working for me, @VaddaABeetch (but thanks for sharing the article, good to see something/anything in our media). This might work for anyone who can't get your links to function:

We should have known it was imperialism all along!

I hadn't known about the EU case, they are really veering into activism with their latest few trans cases. I wonder how they will square the privacy rights of women and the privacy rights of transwomen when they are eventually asked to rule on a case equivalent to Sandie Peggie and have to define what sex means in the charter of fundamental rights

The Gist: Trans rights are Data rights

A UK court has made a decision defining genders which has put it at odds with a less noticed, more important, decision from the CJEU. This is the Gist.

Good piece by Michael Mc Dowell in the IT opinions page. Behind a pay wall unfortunately.

Yes, a good piece (unlike that Gist article, which manages many, many words without ever mentioning women's rights). Here's the McDowell column archived:

"McDonald also said that conversations about trans rights need to be had in “the right atmosphere”, unlike what she described as the “toxic” and hostile environment in the UK and elsewhere.
“We need to reassure each other that we’re starting from a position of respect,” she said."

How can it start from a position of respect when one side refuses to accept the fact that biological sex exists and its not the same as feelings

I hate having to agree wit Michael McDowell

I made reference in an earlier post about Ireland being the useful idiot in promoting gender identity and Self ID.
Regina was the poster girl for useful idiots.
On the plus side, it's obvious Fine Gael are back peddling. They must have sought legal advice following the UK SC judgement.

Why is Regina referring to trans people as having a medical condition? Is that not transphobic of her?

It is indeed. She comes across as not really having a clue, while she was quite happy to go to Scotland and give speeches on how fantastic things were in Ireland.
"You don't need to address women's issues by politicising people who have a medical condition who are exceptionally vulnerable"
The problem is that she never addressed the women's issues and had no intention of doing so. She was far more interested in basking in the glow of Ireland's progressiveness.

A couple of straightforward letters from women in the indo today in response to the dismissal of women’s rights by the adolescent male platformed in yesterday’s paper. Is the misogyny of this not the biggest elephant in the room?

These are great, thanks for posting Puckeen.

There was an article in the Irish Times yesterday by Una Mullally, about Irish Feminism not needing a British Court to tell us what to think - isn't it funny how Wrap the Green Flag Round Me Boys comes out when the UK SC says women a biological women??
To tell you the truth, I didn't have the strength to read it, the headline was enough - I can only deal with so much genderwoo🙄But I hope stronger women than me have written in to respond to her.

Letter-writing/emailing our TDs would be a good idea, to leverage the publicity from the UK SC ruling. It was such clear and common-sense ruling, that it makes anyone who disagrees with it look like a bit of an eejit.

On a more cerebral note, the ruling make the point that interpreting the word 'woman' in any way other than the understanding it had at the time the legislation was passed results in making the law 'incoherent'
[that's my paraphrasing].

If that is true, then the retrospective replacing of the word 'sex' with the ill-defined word 'gender' has resulted in great incoherence in our equality laws - and the removal of legal protection from women meaning biological women.

The UK SC ruling obviously has no legal force here, but I can't help wondering if the Irish judiciary and legal profession are looking over beyond and thinking hmmmmm... their lordships have a pointSmile

Abhannmor · 29/04/2025 14:43

Ah yes let's blame the awful Brits. Mind you liberal Ireland was conspicuous by its absence when Brits were actually interfering in our civil rights - to put it as diplomatically as possible. They told us the Peace Process was a sham and John Hume 😇 was a dupe for talking to Sinn Féin. Now they go all Chucky? Pullease....

Randomer27 · 29/04/2025 17:55

Well Michael McDowell certainly knows that the whole thing is a dogs dinner.

PillowQuilt · 29/04/2025 19:35

That Una Mullally piece was absolute dogshit. She has been wanging on about this for years and STILL her only arguments are 'only meanies think like that' and 'let's not be like the Brits now'. I actually cannot believe she has been getting away with it so long.

As though AI was asked to produce an UM article. Rubbish in, rubbish out

Puckeen · 02/05/2025 07:44

A good letter in The Irish Times on 29.04. re. Una Mullally. That’s just one letter published in response to a particularly irrational ideologically worded article. I wonder did the Irish Times really only receive one letter about this piece?
