I was out driving at 1.30 so I listened to radio 1 - I never listen to it anymore, but today I needed to hear the acts of contrition 😉.

  • Eoin O’Broin was talking and he was blaming the government and saying that he understands that it’s all to do with people wanting better disability rights 🙄. The highest No votes were in SF heartlands - I’d be worried if I was him, and be contrite, not doubling down on woke.
  • All of the No contributors were on about disability rights, and while that was no doubt important, I would argue the simple -‘ do not remove mothers from the constitution’, that we campaigned on, got a lot of traction too.
Edited

I agree.

Whilst I am completely in support of disability rights I do think a lot of voters had reservations about removing the word mother from the Constitution.

My question is why as mothers we have no choice or only a correct choice about how we choose to care for our children?

I have a masters and a professional qualification. I would generally be seen as a bit of a failure for giving up work to look after my kids. My kids didn't settle in childcare ( turns out we have lots of neurodiversity ) and they couldn't cope with afterschool care etc.

Thankfully amongst close friends and family I would have support but I am seen by some as 'less' for not 'working'.

I really think we could be more creative when it comes to childcare. There are other options instead of privatising it all. The call for state funded childcare from left leaning parties ignores the reality of what is often best for children i.e. to be looked after by their mother or father, grandparent etc. when they are young. It was de Valera's experience of being sent away from his mother to be reared in Ireland ( as she couldn't afford to keep him with her and work) that prompted this clause in the Constitution in the first place. I would like to hear some reflection on this in the media but there doesn't seem to be any appetite for this discussion in the main political parties.

The government is shocked. No shit.

Dun Laoghaire said yes.

Ouch. I'm in Dun Laoghaire - Rathdown and everyone I know voted No. It seems we're the minority.

Iloveshihtzus · 09/03/2024 15:53

They still haven’t had a representative for people who wanted to retain the word mother in the constitution- it’s all about carers and disability.

Iloveshihtzus · 09/03/2024 15:54

Delighted that that lovely woman on RTE now is saying to Family Carers and NWCI - who do you represent?

Hang on, have the constituent lines changed? Looks like Dun Laoghaire and Dublin Rathdown are now separate - that must be new?

The government is shocked. No shit.

They'll be even more shocked after the next election.
They shouldn't be though as I've already emailed my local in Government TD and told-- them how many of the electorate feel 😂--
They'll have very expensive post election think tanks about what went wrong.
Build to rent out at extortionate rents by international landlords.
Hospital waiting lists that go on forever.
The most expensive unfinished children's hospital ever in the world that is situated in the wrong place,
ETC ETC
No accountability - RTE etc.

I think for one, not sure which, it was 183 votes. The other was similarly close.

She's giving me the rage - waffling on about people being uninformed... also saying that the constitution states that a woman's place is in the home - that's not what it says!
I wouldn't expect anything less than waffle from the National Women's Council - who think that men can be women.

wow this really shows how out of touch the government is with the people and how we have just had enough of the pushing of the so called progressive agenda
i would love to see a breakdown by men and women. I’d say a lot of working mothers thought ‘hey how about actually implementing the rights of mothers’ instead of getting rid of them’ The effin nightmare of being a working mother in Ireland with abysmal childcare and ridiculously long school holidays. And once that ends we are then caring for aging parents. I am all for equality but let’s see it happen in reality first BEFORE we change our constitution. The vast vast majority of all the caring is done by women.
The fallout from this is going be be delicious. Who me schadenfreude? Yes.

DanielGault · 09/03/2024 16:13

If people were uninformed, it was because the government did not inform them. a tiny leaflet at the 11th hour. And my estate was missed out mysteriously. People should be incredibly cautious when it comes to changing the constitution, it is literally the foundation on which the country is built. The government fucked up massively and assumed we were all idiots and they can take their medicine now

As far as I'm aware her organisation gets almost a million euros per year of taxpayer funding.

And is completely out of touch with the concerns of the majority of Irish women as evidenced by this result. .

Defund the NWCI.

Interesting. IIRC there were 3 at one stage (in Limerick). Were the other 2 released or moved to men's prisons? (Sorry about the interrogation!)

Released as far as I've been able to work out. It all seems to be being hidden as much as possible but I know someone who worked there and as far as she knows there are no males on the women's wing at present.
