So it really shows a divide between politics, media, the ngo sector and people. They will need to be much less incestuous and loosen up the old ties if they don't want this on the reg, as the kids say.

I don't love the NGO sector getting involved in referendums, especially the NWCI, they're supposed to represent all women in the country. I also am confident that they used government funding for their campaign, theres no way they couldn't have they only have a tiny bit of non government funding.

I think the FLAC letter was different because they didn't get involved with the campaign and just offered a legal opinion.

VoteNONO · 09/03/2024 10:32

@StephanieSuperpowers my older nephew & his friends voted for the first time. All between 18 & 20. All voted No No.

Funnily enough the National Women's Council have all the comments turned off on their twitter this morning! I wonder why 😁😁

Good start and hope the no's take it.

It wasn't my intention to derail the thread, I just expressed my opinion re Aontù. It's neither right nor wrong like any other opinion based on what I observe. Thanks for starting the thread @VoteNONO.

I'm feeling cautiously hopeful. I was quite nervous about it all because I really had no idea whether the people I'd heard and read here and elsewhere were unrepresentative. It looks as though they weren't.

Everyone I know IRL that I talked to about it was no/no (only knew one yes/no) so everytime an opinion poll came out massively in favour I was a bit baffled

festivefavorites · 09/03/2024 10:44

RTE saying early tallies NoNo

DeanElderberry · 09/03/2024 10:45

This from the Journal's livestream at 9.57 is very interesting

Some more observations from our reporter Jane Matthews in the RDS, she says a Sandymount box in Dublin Bay South, which had the highest Yes vote in the Marriage Equality referendum, also appears to be “swinging No” in the care referendum.

The government's message didn't sell to people who supported genuinely progressive social change.

DublinFemale · 09/03/2024 10:46

This is @DublinCailin, with let me use my user name had to re register. Annoying

Anyways

Too much of a gamble to have exit polls yesterday.

I don't think the government is confident they can get this across the line.

A run of yes voters in an exit poll could galvanise not interested no voters to stick it to the government.

Earliest we would seen an exit poll would have been after 10 when polling booths are closed

Iloveshihtzus · 09/03/2024 10:47

Yeah - just found you all. I’m thrilled. Watching RTE - polls were as bad as when Trump won. I worked in this area - it shows they have no capture of the social media platforms.

oh I just see they are saying it’s a bad day for democracy 🙄🙄🙄😱

Iloveshihtzus · 09/03/2024 10:49

Now I’m really angry - no one representing No and they are all saying it is due to misunderstanding

DeanElderberry · 09/03/2024 10:52

Surely it's outstandingly good for democracy if hundreds of thousands of people make a decision for themselves, in the face of overwhelming efforts to bamboozle them, and express it though their votes?

Slanabhaile · 09/03/2024 10:52

The only people who said to me they were considering a Yes were those that didn't know anything about the referendum, felt like an automatic response to previous refs - oh it must be a good thing.
Anyone who took time to understand (the ununderstandable!) were voting No.

In my view if you don't fully understand what you're voting for, always vote No.

One last thought... I hope the huge Yes vote (as it looks like) will be enough to prevent another "Vote again, and vote correctly this time" referendum on the subject in the future.

Misunderstanding?! Not far right misinformation or Russia 😁 I understood perfectly well which is why it was No. No.

Maybe if Roderic O Gorman had released the Attorney Generals advice it would have been even clearer for us plebs to understand!

Phew..now perhaps we can enjoy Mothers Day without feeling like total hypocrites.

What is " on the reg" @StephanieSuperpowers ?

If there is misunderstanding that is entirely placed at the feet of the government.

They simply did not do a good job, they couldn't/didn't sell it.

I do however believe a lot of no votes purely an antigovernment kick. Very little if anything to do with the changes.

But hey I'll take it.

DeanElderberry · 09/03/2024 11:03

If it was all about a protest against the government the results would be the same for both questions, and they aren't.

DublinFemale · 09/03/2024 11:04

ROG only signed off on government funding allocated to his department including NGO's 2 weeks ago, from budget last October

The only funding they got this year is the referendum ring fenced money. They were all held to ransom with this referendum.

I think it means regularly.... if it fits the context? But who knows with the teens in my house, I very often have to ask for a translation of smart they're saying!

miri1985 · 09/03/2024 11:06

Paul Murphy who campaigned for yes/yes is blaming the Government and the campaign and retweeting people who are claiming its the far right etc.

Ivana thinks she did a great job

"Down at the RDS Count Centre, Labour leader Ivana Bacik saying “ultimately the failure is the government’s fault”.
Bacik, who herself campaigned for a Yes Yes vote, said the apparent result is “very disappointing”.
“I spoke with many, many people, I don’t think anyone could fault the Labour Party for the campaign we ran, we were out canvassing, we were active and I was very actively engaged in debates on the media and off the media too."

Aontú were very impressive throughout.

You have got to be kidding. The only thing I didn't like about by NN vote was being aligned to lunatics like this.

I'm the same.

This is also annoying me. I don't know a single person who voted Yes Yes and all were very clear on why they were voting No.
