😅if I never hear the words 'durable relationship' again, it will be too soon.

There'll be another referendum around soon, fear not 😂

Carol Nolan said "While we await final confirmation that both referendum propositions have been defeated, I think it is safe to say that the people have sent a very clear message to Government; we no longer want any kind of relationship with you, durable or otherwise."

Sticking it to them! Love it!

Barbie Kardashian was moved from the women's prison months ago. Afaik, all male-born prisoners are now in male prisons.

I don't think that is the case. My understanding was that BK was moved because he presented a significant danger to staff. There was no broad policy change. I'm happy to be corrected if someone can point me to a policy document.

😂😂

Interesting (but not surprising) that nobody from the main parties are anywhere to be seen this morning - probably hiding behind the couch!

They're all too busy off on their taxpayer funded junkets for Paddys

By the way, my in laws had Mary Robinson and her husband over for dinner when they were all young in the 1970s. MIL has a PhD but was 'a mother in the home' at the time. Apparently she was completely looked down upon at the dinner table. Said to FIL afterwards 'we're never having them again!'

MR has gone on the record that women with degrees should be out working outside the home because she thinks that's the right thing to do. The arrogance. I lost a lot of respect for her during that particular interview.

miri1985 · 09/03/2024 14:17

Isn't it funny how when we give them the answer they want democracy is great and the electorate is smart and able to see through misinformation etc. but when we give them the answer they don't want we're all pig ignorant idiots who were swayed by Russian bots and the far right

Yes, there’d be no second guessing if it was Yes Yes.

No official policy change, it was definitely done due to his behaviour towards staff. But afaik, there are now no TW in women's prisons.

MIL had the PhD at the time - brilliant woman (maths genius as well as English PhD) but into craft, baking and loved being around small kids so I'd say it was not a good match.

I was out driving at 1.30 so I listened to radio 1 - I never listen to it anymore, but today I needed to hear the acts of contrition 😉.

  • Eoin O’Broin was talking and he was blaming the government and saying that he understands that it’s all to do with people wanting better disability rights 🙄. The highest No votes were in SF heartlands - I’d be worried if I was him, and be contrite, not doubling down on woke.
  • All of the No contributors were on about disability rights, and while that was no doubt important, I would argue the simple -‘ do not remove mothers from the constitution’, that we campaigned on, got a lot of traction too.

Thats why is such a pity no exit polling, I would be really interested to see how people voted along party lines.

I'm sure SF would spin it as people wanting them to run it again but with other wording

: “What we did have was conviction, and I think that was missing on the government side” - criticises the govt argument about some families going unrecognised in the Constitution as “emotional blackmail”

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 09/03/2024 14:25

From RTÉ

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said her party is "very much" in touch with the Irish public, despite tallies showing both referendums will be defeated.
Like the Government parties, Sinn Féin advocated for two Yes votes in the ballots on Family and Care.
"No, we're very, very much in touch with people, and you'll recall that I said from the get-go, that we were very much in favour of removing sexist language from the Constitution, very much in favour of an inclusive definition of families," Ms McDonald said.
"But we knew that the Government did come up short in terms of the caring wording. They disregarded the Citizens Assembly, they didn't consult with opposition or with other stakeholders. They didn't collaborate, and they failed to convince.
"I know, talking to lots of people, that people were left with an unbalanced decision to make and I think it's a great pity that the Government went on this kind of solo run, and they've had their answer," she added.

Hmm, more waffle from Mary Lou...

I am one of those mothers. I met Mary Robinson early on in my career, I never liked her. I grew up near her hometown and her family were very arrogant. They looked down on the rest of us.

That's so disappointing. I have a masters degree in a field I'm genuinely quite good at and feel quite passionate about. I'm also pretty talented athletically and love my sport very, very much. But raising my son has been the singular most rewarding and joyful experience of my life. Nothing I have ever done or am likely to ever do will be more important to me. I would never tell mothers who don't feel like I do that they are wrong. We're all different. But how fucking dare anyone judge me for prioritising being at home with my kid when he was young. Even now, that I have to rely on some childcare, I feel torn and have cut back on my hobbies rather than more of my time with him. It's only temporary anyway, before too long I'll be the last person he wants to spend his free time with.

Couldn't argue with him there after seeing McEntee the other night. As my polish friend used to say, she was 'like a baby in the fog' 😁

Ah, that makes sense. You'd love MIL - great woman.

As it happens Mary Robinson awarded me my PhD - she'll probably be disappointed to know that I worked part-time when DC were small. Each to their own.

Am thinking of getting into cross-stitch - saw a great template the other day 'Alexa, feed my kids' 😁

Barbie was eventually moved due to the threats he made against female officers and prisoners. I don't think the other male prisoners were moved.

It's awful isn't it! Women have been fighting forever to be able to make the choice for themselves, not to be told you're worthless if you're choosing to work at home. I got the ick about her when I heard about her Saudi friends, it didn't compute.

BonzoGates · 09/03/2024 14:35

She was seriously unimpressive on the Saudi issue.

Interesting. IIRC there were 3 at one stage (in Limerick). Were the other 2 released or moved to men's prisons? (Sorry about the interrogation!)

She forgot to add a bit to explain how a party in opposition decided to back the government campaign while disagreeing with it. What does that say about their integrity (as well as they political cop-on)?

DublinFemale · 09/03/2024 14:52

There is a legislative proposal written in union with the The Countess and Peadar Tobin to have prisons sex based.

The legal status is GRA trumps biological sex.

There was definitely a convicted sex offender incarcerated in Limerick prison with BK. Could be released by now, sexual offence sentencing are not exactly taken seriously by judges.

There was also a sex offender in Mountjoy prison, who had a prison officer assigned to them every time they left their single cell. Apparently this was to protect him from the scary female prisoners.

Currently also a trans woman can insist on a female prison guard to complete the strip search, officers cannot refuse.

Exactly, so she will tow the government line despite not agreeing - why?

Apparently she was heckled as she went in this morning.... I think none of the parties are very popular today. This doesn't bode well for a General Election.

DeanElderberry · 09/03/2024 14:55

M-L McDonald doesn't like the 'sexist language' in the constitution, which I suspect means the acknowledgement that there are sexes. She's a believer in gender.

Leo's extreme right wing outburst the other day does explain why he was so opposed to keeping and extending the right to a life in the home, and to proper care supports, but it's still surprising to me that almost all the other pols agreed with him.
