Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

The One4All vouchers used to be good but are a pita to use now. Lots of companies no longer give them to staff because of the negative feedback.

Good plan re the vouchers. Actually this thread has given me an idea : books about Ireland in the 60s etc. Damien Corless wrote one about children's street games. Must be a few biographies like that.

There were box sets of reeilng in the years. Not sure if still available. Trying to think of books but nothing springs to mind.

They used to be so handy. Ffs. I'm currently that Grandpa Simpson 'old man yells at cloud' meme. I need to chill!

I notice everyone brushed over my posts about all the rape and victim blaming that goes on in Ireland.

That is the attitude in this country which I have to say I've seen a good bit.

Brush the bad stuff under the carpet. Act like it doesnt happen. Turn the head the other way.

People are ignoring your posts, @Mooshamoo, because you’re extremely psychologically fragile and apparently obsessed with haunting threads on Craicnet in order to repeat endlessly your detestation of Ireland, your miserable smalltown past and your obsession with how Irish people who are rich and/or play GAA have it easy, and are also bullies and bigots. It’s clear you are unhappy and unwell, and nothing anyone can say on here will help you.

If it is as impossible as you say for you to leave the area, if not the country, which is making you so unhappy, you would be far better off starting a thread on the Mental Health sub board.

And I for one don’t appreciate you making someone else’s sexual assault or racist incident fuel for your own psychological obsession. I am not brushing them under any carpet, I am just not interested in fuelling your monomania any more.

I think (but could be wrong!) shinty was the scottish version of hurling?

Thighdentitycrisis · 08/10/2023 19:17

Shinty is like hurling / hockey etc
Road bowling is like bowls / pétanque / boules I believe

I'm not sure about boules etc but they go quite a distance in bowling, a couple of miles or so anyway. It's still played. but I don't see it as much now.

Afaik (and not coming from a particulatly informed pov) shinty is like hurling, and boules is like bowling. So two v different animals tbf!

MaudGonneOutForAFag · 08/10/2023 22:02

Road bowling isn’t like boules, really — I mean, I think the usual distance is a couple of miles along a road, maybe more? The winner is whoever covers the distance in the fewest throws. Different throwing styles in Cork and Armagh, but I don’t know much more. I had a go once and threw the bowl about ten feet, weedily, into a ditch.

Abhannmor · 08/10/2023 22:24

Saw road bowling in Rainham Marshes , east London one Sunday , much to my surprise. Lots of Cork lads worked at Ford's back then. You say it to rhyme with ' fowl - ing ' in Cork btw.

Mooshamoo · 09/10/2023 19:19

Great weather today.
I love the country walks in Ireland.

Another thing I like is when you are driving, how good the garages are now that we stop at.

The garage near me has a petrol station, shop, cafe inside, coffee shop inside, and a nice seating area outside. It's great to drive on a lovely country road and then pit stop in a nice place.

Mooshamoo · 09/10/2023 20:00

My mother has a friend who is very funny. She loves talking about deaths.

I overheard their phone call today.

She said to my mam in one breath:

Hi Mary. Did you hear about the fella who fell off the roof of a garage and died last week. He fell to his death. Oh it's shocking. Then there was the young fella who threw himself into the canal. Ah he was only young. And then did you see the woman was murdered in tullamore last week. Oh tis shocking. Anyway how are you?

UnsungShero · 09/10/2023 21:05

Road bowling was big where I grew up.

Used to really annoy me because some men from up the parish would take over the road outside my house and then get very angry if we dared walk on the road.

That must have been really annoying!

I like this thread as it's very nostalgic.I love seeing all those 80's ads again.
I live overseas and it's so nice when I go back and complete strangers say Hello or give you a nod.Irish drivers are also very courteous on the roads-will gove you time to park or turn around.

There's 5 cities in the Republic of Ireland though Kilkenny go on about being a city too due to some king's charter.

My DS lives in Dublin in Rathmines and pays €620 approx for a double room in a modern 3 bed apartment and loves the location.

It is a city.

You'll have a lot of people from that neck of the woods after you for saying that they go on about it being a city 😆

LadyEloise1 · 10/10/2023 16:42

"....Irish drivers are also very courteous....."
@Tangoes my cousin actually got a nod and was graciously allowed out in traffic by someone who was dropping off two guys to rob a bank ( she found out later ).
You couldn't make it up. 😂

Sgtmajormummy · 10/10/2023 23:28

I lived in Rathmines when I was a student in the 80s.
While I was back in Dublin I went for a walk around the area and looked in an Estate Agent’s window. Two MILLION euros for an uninspiring townhouse on Rathmines Road. I know the Portobello area is desirable, but come ON…!

Tangoes · 11/10/2023 14:52

@LadyEloise1 that's gas.
2 million for Rathmines is crazy although some very nice red bricks over towards Ranelagh and Rathgar too.
