Gender Critical in Ireland Part 3

VaddaABeetch · 03/04/2023 13:07

I’m watching RTE news. They mentioned the Garda representatives organisation are concerned about Gender Identity in the workplace. It’s been brought in without consultation & without training.

the Garda Commissioner has said that Garda may be disciplined for misgendering.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

To be honest, I wouldn't get too excited about that on LinkedIn. A few years ago, LinkedIn was promoting users to include pronouns. I know loads of people with them who are definitely not TRAs. They just went with the flow at the time.

I would look on this as an indicator that I need more information about his position rather than proof of his position.

Abhannmor · 06/04/2024 13:55

Aontaím leat @OchonAgusOchonOh . Besides all the clever consultants and researchers must be poring over the implications of the Referendum double whammy ? Already you have old hands like Ring and Flanagan saying ' why don't we build more houses?' And other such heresies.

Prompting users to include pronouns, not promoting users to include pronouns.

If only there was a function that could interpret what I meant rather than what I typed.

I don't know, he is described as being leader of FG, so it has been updated fairly recently but he opted to continue with his pronouns included. Not a good indicator IMO.

Yes, he could have removed them but to do so he would have had to thought to go in to those specific settings. I suspect someone was told to update to leader of FG rather than a review of all the settings. Also, removing them is a much stronger statement and would draw more attention than leaving them so it would be easier just to go with the status quo.

I'm not saying he's not a TRA. I'm just saying that's not enough evidence for me to say that he is.

3timeslucky · 06/04/2024 17:12

I have a real problem with the non-thinking usage of pronouns. So either he hasn't thought about how they fit into this ideological push - in which case he's going to be less than useless in challenging it; or he has thought about it and has decided to use them - in which case he's going to be an active proponent. Neither is good. His attitude towards Sarah Holmes is another red flag. He'll need to do something overt and significant for me to trust me on this issue.

I agree that non-thinking use of pronouns is concerning but a lot of people on LinkedIn just did it when prompted and thought no more of it.

I suspect he is not a biological realist, given the party's performance to date but maybe he will see sense...

MaeveofConnaught · 06/04/2024 18:57

I doubt it was simply an oversight to continue with his pronouns in his bio. He isn't known as the TikTok Taoiseach for nothing. He is considered to be very savvy in his use of social media. For someone who wants to get back to basics after the disaster of the recent Referendum this doesn't inspire confidence that he really intends to do that.

SH will be gone before the end of the year. I’d bet my (modest) house on it

Is anyone else going to the Countess event later this month at the RDS? I believe KJK will be a speaker 😀

I think I will. The Countess have been doggedly working away at this since forever and I want to support them. A big crowd in the RDS would be fantastic.

VaddaABeetch · 07/04/2024 14:23

I’ll be there.

Poor old TicTok Taoiseach. What a fate to get the big job when all the ideas your handlers got from social media are becoming old hat.

Thank you so much for the archive link to that brilliant article @miri1985 He is spot on - I love this line "the protections based on being a woman are emptied of any force when the word “woman” is emptied of any meaning"

Genesis1v27 · 08/04/2024 14:52

Former IHREC chief and current European candidate for the Social Democrats Sinéad Gibney said this yesterday, possibly in response to the Eoin O'Malley piece above:

"Trans rights are human rights. Listen to trans people, prioritise their needs."

https://twitter.com/sineadgibney/status/1776972124810350973

That party will never get my vote.

I can't see whether there are many replies? Has she got any pushback?

I wish someone would ask her - what human rights does she think they don't already have? Why is it considered a human right to be legally counted as something you are not?

Interesting that BK is being referred to as a transgender woman, rather than simply woman, and that a photo is included. No pronouns used in the story either.

Big change from 2022 when they use "she" pronouns and didn't carry a photo https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/courts/barbie-kardashian-found-guilty-of-threatening-to-kill-mother/41630988.html.

Unfortunately, the same Article in the times (https://www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/courts/2024/04/08/barbie-kardashian-appears-in-court-on-charges-of-threatening-to-kill-two-women/) uses the pronoun "she" and has no photo. The Limerick post is also the same, as is RTE.

Ah well, one newspaper appearing to see sense is at least a tiny bit of progress.

Barbie Kardashian appears in court on charges of threatening to kill two women

Transgender woman facing charges of making threats on four occasions last year

Yes, thank you for putting the archive link for that article @miri1985. It's a great article and so clear about the issues. I don't think I have seen something like that in an Irish newspaper. The indo has a big readership too

So prioritise their needs over the needs of women? That is not equality.

It's really unfortunate that the Social Democrats are so captured as they would be natural party for my vote otherwise. Realistically, I'm only left with independents as I really don't think I can vote for Aunt.
