VaddaABeetch · 03/04/2023 13:07

I’m watching RTE news. They mentioned the Garda representatives organisation are concerned about Gender Identity in the workplace. It’s been brought in without consultation & without training.

the Garda Commissioner has said that Garda may be disciplined for misgendering.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think one question in a referendum can be about two things at once.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 04/08/2023 13:35

2015 Constitutional referendum question:

The amendment inserted a new section 4 to Article 41 of the Constitution. The English text reads:

4. Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.

The Irish text reads:

4. Féadfaidh beirt, gan beann ar a ngnéas, conradh pósta a dhéanamh de réir dlí.

The text in Irish and English is intended to have the same meaning; in the event of a conflict, the Irish version takes precedence.

No reference to abolishing sex and replacing it with gender - that was all down to the politicians, not in any way authorised by the public vote. I suspect K Zappone may have been pushing for gender.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 04/08/2023 13:43

Also of course the Lydia Foy case. A classic example of hard cases making bad law imo. Apart from anything else, waiting a few week for the marriage referendum would have left L F with everything L F wanted in terms of rights.

There should be uproar about it. But I think the main reason there hadn't been is that the majority of people just don't actually know!

I honestly thought a question had been snuck in somehow even though I didn't remember it. I was so shocked when I read about it (the G.R. Act) being in place that I couldn't get my head around how it could have happened without any public discussion. We need to be angry about this.

The CEO of the Electoral Commission (Art O'Leary) has reservations regarding the short lead in time for these referenda. Watch this space.

Gender equality referendum date thrown into doubt by time needed for information campaign – The Irish Times

"The Irish Times asked Mr O’Leary if, in the absence of the wording being finalised before the return of the Dáil in September, the November referendum date is unlikely.
He replied: “It is difficult to see how we could do a proper information campaign if we had less than the 14 to 16 weeks required.”

The way Bacik describes removing women's rights as 'deleting the sexist language' from the constitution! I very much doubt they're planning to extend the rights to men.

StephanieSuperpowers · 04/08/2023 22:01

Very disappointed in Bacik. She did know what a woman was and what it means to be female back in the mists of time. Mind you, that was decades ago. Times change and the pole is slippery.

Believerinbiology · 04/08/2023 22:26

100% it was not a question...the two questions were about same sex marriage and lowering the presidential candidacy age. Think you are falling for the a sort of Mandela effect whereby the media in other countries have said we voted on it so much that you start to believe it. It was brought in the same year via a bill that the public never voted on and any media coverage was very limited. Most the coverage there was occurred during early stages of the bill when it wasn't self id and medical approval/input was a requirement.

Farmageddon · 04/08/2023 22:35

Self ID wasn't in the referendum, it's was brought into legislation in the same year as the gay marriage referendum so it's easy to get the two confused I guess. It was (I believe) supposed to be brought in as a 'medical model' and that what was was discussed, but at the last minute was switched to Self ID.

But there was no public vote, I suppose because our constitution doesn't explicitly define man or woman - as Helen Joyce said the founding fathers of Ireland never expected that men would claim to be women or visa versa, so it wasn't codified in the constitution.

Yes I think that's exactly what's happened, my apologies, I didn't remember any question about it on the ballot paper but believed there must have been!

It's hard to know where this is all going to end. Hopefully there won't be a referendum without enough time to fairly debate all the issues.

Just heard that Let Women Speak is coming to Dublin on the 16th of September. Details on the Standing for Women website, most likely.

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/08/2023 20:39

Hope lots of women have the ovaries to go. I'm sure many more would sincerely wish to be there, even if they feel unable.

I wonder if Ranty Hiss will send out the battle cry to harm women at it.

VaddaABeetch · 08/08/2023 09:09

Prissy pants will be all over Let Women Speak. A group of TRAs screaming & swearing madly at mostly middle aged women will peak even more people. Bring it on .

elgreco · 08/08/2023 18:06

I'll go.

Grandomens · 08/08/2023 18:22

Don't like the prissy pants/randy hiss name calling here. Absolutely hate the stage name but why can't we simply say Rory O'Neill instead? No need to stoop to that level is there?

Villagetoraiseachild · 08/08/2023 20:48

I guess a way forward is not to centre it around a man, but to focus on the brave women who will gather and speak. If there are people protesting loudly, be sure to have earplugs or headphones or stand close to the speakers in support. You can listen to it all on Youtube afterwards so you won't miss a word. It's our hard won democratic right to be at these events. Have only been to one but it was very inspiring. Courage calls to courage. Women's and girls' rights to safe spaces and care are being eroded.

3timeslucky · 08/08/2023 21:37

That's useful advice @Villagetoraiseachild

Grandomens · 08/08/2023 21:51

Yes, sounds good @Villagetoraiseachild

3timeslucky · 09/08/2023 08:14

We need a secret signal to find each other there :-)

VaddaABeetch · 15/08/2023 16:11

Anyone here going to Let Women Speak on 19th Sept Dublin City Crntre?

I was sorely tempted until I looked at hotel prices....
