VaddaABeetch · 03/04/2023 13:07

I’m watching RTE news. They mentioned the Garda representatives organisation are concerned about Gender Identity in the workplace. It’s been brought in without consultation & without training.

the Garda Commissioner has said that Garda may be disciplined for misgendering.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

At the RDS on the same day as Let Women Speak, Helen Joyce will be among the speakers at "Ireland Uncensored," regarding the Irish government's bill stifling of freedom of speech under the guise of combatting so-called "hate speech." She may be at the LWS event beforehand.

Edited

Thanks for that, I will try and attend if I can.

It goes against every fibre of my body to agree with Ronan Mullen but I agree with him on this issue.

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/08/2023 16:12

Yeah. One thing this experience has taught me is that dismissing people out of hand because I may disagree with them about other things is a childish and silly way to behave. Very few people are evil, very few are acting out of pure malice. You may not agree with everything someone says, but you might find you agree with something - and sometimes you can respect people's reasons for thinking as they do, even if you've reached different conclusions.

100% agree.

Aha, the LWS time change was to give people time to get to the other event. I hope Helen Joyce speaks at both.... she's brilliant and very clear.

That poster is funny, the triumvirate of male speakers with a couple of women on the wings to fill the space up....

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/08/2023 09:31

I hope the RDS gets a great turn out.

Annasgirl · 26/08/2023 17:15

Count me in for the RDS - I might not make both, Saturday is mad here with DCs sport!!!

We should try to find a way to find each other.

VaddaABeetch · 26/08/2023 21:36

I’m at LWS, I’m not going to try to race to RDS, let’s try to see each other

Pity really, quite apart from the gender issue I'd love to see that shower of cold-hearted gobshites explain how they are meeting women's right to a life in the home when so many people don't have a home.

https://mobileapp.irishtimes.com/politics/2023/08/28/doubts-grow-over-women-in-the-home-referendum/

I think the word on the street is finally getting back to politicians - there is a silent majority opposed to the gender agenda

It bugs me so much that they are trying to run and hide away from these issues.

'Could lead to divisive debates' - why isn't that a good thing? A true democracy requires debate over important issues, why are they so afraid?

As for the source in the article saying they have no good answers to these questions - why the hell not?

They are trying to make laws they don't really understand the impact of.

Farmageddon · 28/08/2023 15:04

Also from the article:
Last week, a number of NGOs and lobby groups came together to urge the Government to publish a wording for the proposed constitutional change and name a date for the referendum.

I'd be interested to know what 'lobby groups' are pushing for this to go ahead.

Abhannmor · 28/08/2023 15:45

Fair enough. But we don't need far right nut jobs calling librarians ' paedos' on our side of the argument.

I think we will win without their input

This letter was published in last Thursday's Irish Independent.
Note the signatories

"Where is the proposed wording of constitutional amendment on gender? In March, the Government announced a historic referendum to amend the Constitution in line with the recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly on Gender Equality.
It was recommended that limits on the role of women be removed; to value and recognise care in the home and the wider community; and to protect all families equally.
We believe this referendum represents a unique opportunity to ensure the Constitution respects and reflects the diversity of the people and families of Ireland today.
In the referendum timeline published by the Government, the wording was expected by mid-May. This deadline has passed.
Without knowing the exact wording, it will be increasingly difficult to build a civil society response.
This is unfair to the families and communities directly affected and to the Irish people who need time to discuss these core issues.
We hope the delay does not signal a Government backtrack from the recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly and the Joint Oireachtas Committee - specifically, removing the outmoded reference to "women in the home”; the recognition of the importance of care; and a more inclusive definition of family that protects all families.
We are seeking urgent clarification on when the referendum wording will be published. It is critical that the Irish public have sufficient time to have a national conversation on these important issues for society.
We have an opportunity now more than ever to make Ireland a more inclusive and caring place to live.
Orla O'Connor, National Women's Council of Ireland; Damien Peelo, Treoir; Catherine Cox, Family Carers Ireland; Karen Kiernan, One Family; Ethel Buckley, Siptu"

StephanieSuperpowers · 29/08/2023 20:20

Two two letters in the irish times today about this topic. How do we feel about the referendum not going ahead? I, for one, am a bit disappointed. I was looking forward to people having to engage with the topic.

3timeslucky · 30/08/2023 07:39

Great letters!

At one level I'm disappointed. But another I was worried about how the NGOs would mobilise with the govt to get their version of reality over the line.

In other news ... 12-2 in the Merrion Sq area on the 16th for LWS. The TRAs have now changed their Dail march thing to 11am. I'm vaguely terrified but determined to be there.

elgreco · 30/08/2023 09:21

I am bringing my husband, its ridiculous that I wouldn't feel safe otherwise. Really angry about all of this now.

VaddaABeetch · 10/09/2023 09:43

A reminder of Let Women Speak this Saturday in Merrion Square at 12.

It's probably impossible to say, but on the off-chance, is there any indication of how many people might attend?

Abhannmor · 10/09/2023 10:13

Well....it looks like it will be rainy and only 12c . Hopefully that might deter some of the Black Pampers.

VaddaABeetch · 10/09/2023 12:38

I’ve heard 200 but I don’t know what that’s based on.

You can "book" on the Standing for Women website.
Of course there is no need to book, but it helps plan the stewarding etc
But that's where the estimate possibly came from.

Fubbs · 11/09/2023 17:18

Signed, thank you.

I worked up the courage last week to inform my youngest's secondary school that I do not give permission for them to teach my child gender woo. I used the letter from The Countess so I could tell them why I am allowed to do this but toned it down a bit.

My son wasn't sure he wanted to be kept out of the class and it's only one class so I've asked that even though he's present, he is not asked to participate. Year head was very reasonable, was worried I was putting his AND my heads above the parapet! My child is a contrary sod so would possibly go to class just to spite me anyway so at least this way, I'm minimising his participation.
