That poor little lad who was attacked by a dog Sad

Awful. Sad
Stupid irresponsible dog owners.
And I love dogs.
But I have a healthy respect for them and believe they should be on a lead in public.
Just last week a man a man who had been savagely attacked on a beach was on Liveline.

LizzieAnt · 29/11/2022 19:41

Is there any hope of banning these dangerous breeds in Ireland? And actually enforcing the ban?
There are restrictions already (dangerous breeds to be on a lead and muzzled in public), but it's obviously not working.
Don't know what to do, that poor child and his family...and it will happen again if nothing is done.

JaneJeffer · 29/11/2022 19:47

People are so stupid with dogs. You see them posting online with little babies beside them. I don't care how quiet you think your dog is any of them can snap all of a sudden. It said it was a pit bull on the news. I thought they were banned?

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 29/11/2022 19:50

Thing is it is not the dogs fault it is entirely the owners. A family member has 3 of this breed and they are lovely but he has them muzzled and on leads when out etc. It is the twats that go around thinking dogs are the same as humans that are the problem.

LizzieAnt · 29/11/2022 19:55

They're restricted, not banned afaik. Should be muzzled in public so in that sense in is the owner's fault. But there's a reason some breeds need to be muzzled and not others - they're inherently more dangerous. I see Senator Malcolm Byrne is calling for a ban on dangerous dogs now...

eggandonion · 29/11/2022 23:05

A man i know has a rottweiler and a dog whose breed I don't know, but is used by the German defence forces. The owner is strong, used to big dogs, but that one is fierce. I would be more wary of him than the rottweiler. But he isn't on a restricted list.
And I have no idea why anyone would have such a dog in a family home.

honeyrider · 30/11/2022 00:18

I accidentally saw a photo of the boy, jaysus his face has been ripped assunder and his brother was on the radio today and described the horrific injuries.

The dog owner has been arrested - a man in his 20's.

sillysmiles · 02/12/2022 08:37

There are restrictions already (dangerous breeds to be on a lead and muzzled in public), but it's obviously not working.

You are right, the restrictions are not working because they are not enforced. Creating new laws is only going to impact those owners who already follow the laws and would still do nothing to prevent incidents like this happening - as these types of owners still wouldn't abide by the laws.
Enforcement of the restrictions are required.
Personally I think there should be a registry of dog owners - but again that is a resources and enforcement issue.

eggandonion · 02/12/2022 09:15

There are dog licences and dog wardens. Our licence was checked by the warden recently.
Which doesn't stop anyone having a dangerous dog......

LizzieAnt · 02/12/2022 09:36

Yes, I absolutely agree that the current restrictions need to be enforced @sillysmiles . I would go one step further and ban the pit bull type breeds too and maybe a number of other niche breeds. The statistics on serious dog attacks by breed makes for very sobering reading. In lots of cases it's members of the owner's family who are attacked (often children), so the present rules to muzzle in public places won't prevent such attacks. In these cases, families of the victim are often surprised by the attack, saying the dog always appeared loving previously.

It's not the animals' fault, we bred them to be like this and it was a mistake imo. (Some of the breeds banned in the UK were bred to hunt animals like puma, others to hunt down escaped slaves!) If the ban were on a phased basis (ie no new pups) it would be fair to present responsible owners, though I think animals should be immediatedly removed from irresponsible owners. You are right that enforcement is crucial and it all probably comes down to money unfortunately. I think the horrific attack on the young boy in Wexford should be a wake-up call though, and I hope the government will act.

LadyEloise1 · 02/12/2022 10:25

Two sentences from your post @LizzieAnt
".....enforcement is crucial..."
".....I hope the government will act."

Two chances - none and f*ck all.
Sadly.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 02/12/2022 10:26

I can't bear to think about that poor boy, how he'll recover physically and emotionally God love him. And his family. Not to mention the other children who witnessed it. It's just horrific Sad

How is everyone doing with their Christmas prep? I've got most things sorted I usually do at this stage, I have a list and try to stick to it! I just ordered a load of shower steamers off a seller on Etsy who's based in Donegal, they will be put in with other things as fillers I'm looking forward to getting them as they get great reviews. I do most of my shopping online and get it delivered to my work address, so my office ends up like Santa's grotto by the middle of the month!! Never anything in the pile for me though Hmm I've told DH that this year I want (actually need) a new handbag and I'm happy to wait until after Christmas and call into Kildare Village on route to visiting relatives where I'll hopefully pick up a bit of a bargain Xmas Smile

JaneJeffer · 02/12/2022 10:38

Don't be leaving yourself out of the shopping @LifeInAHamsterWheel! Get something you want. There's actually a lot of sales already.

What's a shower steamer by the way?

That's what I'm afraid of too, but I live in hope.
I'll contact our local TD about it and make some noise at least. I just really want to try and stop it happening again, because it will unless we try to do something to stop it.

As usual I'm a disaster wheñ it comes to being organised for Christmas!🎄 Intrigued by the shower steamers too @LifeInAHamsterWheel.

LizzieAnt · 02/12/2022 12:00

Ah, just googled them. So more like a bath bomb than a cleaning device. Makes sense now 😁
I'd never come across them before, nice idea.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 02/12/2022 15:14

Oh no they're not for cleaning!! I don't like baths and if I had one I don't think I'd like a bath bomb (don't like the idea of all that scented stuff going places!!) but these are little pellets that you sit in the base of the shower and they dissolve and release essential oils and the shower smells amazing. That's my understanding anyway. I've never used one but I like the sound of them and now my pals are going to be treated to a couple in their gift bags Xmas Smile

JaneJeffer · 02/12/2022 18:24

They sound nice. I'm not a bath fan either.

Deliveries are very slow these days and An Post just as bad.

Any poster from Northern Ireland on here ?
Perhaps you could help me ?
It's only a trivial matter.
I'm watching a 3 part series on BBC1, Northern Ireland called Granite Harbour.
All 3 episodes have been shown on other BBC1 stations and there is a discussion thread about the programme on Mumsnet.
For some reason I can't see when Episodes 2 & 3 will be shown on BBC Northern Ireland and I don't have / can't get the BBCIplayer as I live in the Republic.
Would you check please to see when Episodes 2&3 will be shown on BBC 1 Northern Ireland for me.
Thanks in advance

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 04/12/2022 11:04

December 9th and 16th.

LadyEloise1 · 04/12/2022 12:56

@Igglepiggleslittletoe
Thank you.
I was inputting programmes to record on my tv ( I use Saturday's Irish Times magazine for the week ahead's tv listings ) and it's not on, "Would I Lie To You At Christmas" is on and B&B By the Sea at around 8/9 pm.
I also checked on the TV planner on the tv itself and again no mention of "Granite" however the Sunday Times magazine has it on at 8 pm on BBC Northern Ireland on Friday.
😩

eggandonion · 04/12/2022 17:25

I hate not having access to iplayer, and i hate going to watch something on bbc and having a bbcni programme instead. Im grumpy today, its cold!

JaneJeffer · 04/12/2022 17:35

eggandonion · 05/12/2022 12:34

Today is change the duvet cover day. I have tried endless systems, i still hate doing it. Wash it, dry it, iron it, i would pay someone else to put it on. Its as bad as putting shopping away. Xmas Sad
