How is everyone?
I can't believe how busy our local posh bar is, it is lovely but expensive. Will people get terrified by bills between now and Christmas?
I overheard someone a few years ago in dunnes saying that you shouldn't pay full price for a top, it will be reduced in a few weeks, or you will forget about it. Which is good advice for the current situation!

LadyEloise1 · 22/10/2022 18:37

Another bit if good news. Another abuser, who sexually abused his own daughter has had his sentence increased because the original sentence was deemed too lenient.

Hi all! The weather turned very wintry all of a sudden, didn't it? We got a real battering of rain and flooding last weekend. The new relief road around my town is brilliant. Traffic is circulating much better. It was needed a long time ago, but better late than never! The new posh pub is good for the town too.

I saw that LadyEloïse1. Yes, that's a positive development.

LadyEloise1 · 23/10/2022 10:24

Lovely weather in Dublin yesterday. 17 degrees.
Not so nice today 🙁
I really dislike late autumn and winter. The damp Sad

eggandonion · 23/10/2022 13:48

Posh pub isnt doing coffee and scones on Saturday, and no brunch. Getting staff id difficult. And fancy restaurant with fabulous view is closed for the next while. I can't aspire to eating out all weekend... New Asian fusion place is opening soon for me to aspire to! Hospitality is finding times tough.
I had to go round the supermarket twice, because I wanted a bottle of wine and it was too early. I can't even drink it today, im on nasty antibiotics.
I wonder if the sun will stay!

honeyrider · 23/10/2022 17:59

Lovely day here today, very mild. I'm too unwell to go out and enjoy it. I'm on very strong antibiotics, steroids and nasal steroids and floored by the medication but at least I'm starting to improve.

DS1 and his new girlfriend stayed in a hotel last night and called out a short while ago for a cuppa and introduce her to me. No matter how floored I felt I tore round tidying the place making sure the sinks and bathroom were clean not that it was bad but I wanted to make a good impression. His girlfriend seems lovely but she's moving abroad in January.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 24/10/2022 09:59

Get well soon Egg and Honeyrider! ☕️

eggandonion · 24/10/2022 10:58

I have finished my antibiotics so should be feeling better soon. I did a mumsnet search for them, lots of people have suffered. They are for gums.
Its nice here today so im doing washing i should defrost the freezer but have moved it down the list.

Hi, Did anyone watch the prime time episode on O'Connell Street.

It needs to be cleaned up, its a disgrace.

I walk with DD in the morning by Trinity to the green luas line, she's 14 it just isn't safe for her to walk alone.

I rarely see any gardai, there is a lot of open drug use, urine, people sleeping in doorways.

halfpasteleven · 25/10/2022 21:56

I watched it on the player Sunday night.

It was grim.

I went to college in Dublin (quite a few years ago) and Fibber Magees (down at the very end) was a favourite haunt of ours..
Never had any problems/ saw anything bad getting home from it and we sometimes walked to rathmines from there
I don't think I'd spend very long on O'Connell street these days, even in daylight hours...
It's a shame as it has such potential..

eggandonion · 26/10/2022 08:46

It is a lovely street, my granny worked in Clerys about 100 yeats ago.
But the social issues need solved - I know that sounds wishy washy - and I have no idea how they do that.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 26/10/2022 11:15

Lovely clear blue skies in Dublin this morning although it is definitely thick tights and boots weather.

Agree on O Connell street. As teens we thought nothing of walking down that street at night but as an adult now I am hardpushed to walk in broad daylight.

Carriemac · 26/10/2022 12:04

when I first met DH, his fiends came over from wales on a rugby trip and stayed off OConnell street, the witnesses a stabbing in the first hour they were there ...

honeyrider · 26/10/2022 13:02

O'Connell Street has become an awful kip, even during the day there's open crime happening and a sense of menace yet nothing is being done to deal with it.

Last week when TD Paul Kehoe correctly stated the truth about O'Connell Street the likes of Lynn Ruane and her PC brigade were only concerned about his use of the word druggies saying it was insulting. She's more interested in looking PC than dealing with the problems.

eggandonion · 26/10/2022 14:08

There are multiple problems on the street. Addiction, homeless, begging, gurriers, lack of policing. Moving people with issues elsewhere doesn't solve the problems, it just causes more of the same in a different street.
Having said that, Cork can be fairly grim at night and Eyre Square has a bad reputation. Is it a city thing? How has it grown? Can it be solved?

EmeraldShamrock1 · 26/10/2022 15:00

I agree there are multiple problems that need to be solved.

It's embarrassing how derelict it has become.

It was always wild at night but the daytime was okay.

I think now it's been highlighted it will be improved, clamping down on open drug dealing will be a start.

LadyEloise1 · 26/10/2022 15:20

I had high hopes for the Garda Commissioner - " new broom" etc coming from a different jurisdiction.
Same old, same old......
Valuable resources - 2/3 gardai on speed checkpoint on a dual carriageway that has a ridiculous speed limit of 60kph ( narrow, twisty bad roads have speed limits of 100kph ffs ) at 2pm when commuter traffic is going the other way or garda speed checkpoint just coming up to the roundabout at the East Link mid afternoon.
Bonkers
Meanwhile O' Connell Street and its environs are falling apart.
I fear for visitors and am ashamed of what they have to endure.
I despair of our Justice Minister.
Every week she has some new law or regulation to be introduced yet the very basics of a safe society - visible police on the ground is ignored.
Reopen the shut Garda stations, tougher bail laws, tougher sentencing.
We, the ordinary, decent citizens, many of us tax payers, paying the wages of the Gardai and the politicians, deserve to feel safe in our environments.

eggandonion · 26/10/2022 15:47

It should be lovely to promenade along, but i don't think politicians promenade very much anywhere. I don't think they see much from nice chauffeur driven cars.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 26/10/2022 15:56

I very rarely go to Dublin, but I thought O'Connell Street looked rough years ago.
I also think that Cork city centre has become very dodgy. It was alright in the years when I was young, but I fear for my kid who goes out now.

I know you are right !

The other day a cavalcade of garda motorbikes drove through and stopped traffic on a main road. You'd think Joe Biden or the British Royals had arrived back there was such a commotion.
Probably escorting Mícheál or Leo back for their tea. 🙄

eggandonion · 26/10/2022 17:39

Every low flying helicopter over us, we say it is Simon Coveney back from a business trip. I don't think Michael McGrath has time to go into the city at night, but as his kids get older he can worry about the city hall disco!
It's not nice worrying about young people out and about in general, because of social issues being ignored.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 26/10/2022 20:39

It's shocking for tourism and businesses in the area.

This 100%.

The gardai are mostly a revenue collecting agency now.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 27/10/2022 09:33

I have to agree especially with the new driving rules from last night. ALL about collecting the money.
