Thank you @JaneJeffer
9 threads later.. who would have thought it ..

mrsfeatherbottom · 19/12/2021 07:55

Was chatting to my mum the other day and we both agreed that we are so glad that we didn't know in March 2020 that it would go on so long. Our misplaced optimism was what got us through each lockdown!

LadyEloise1 · 19/12/2021 08:06

Can someone explain to me why, if the Omicron variant is mild, the Government is imposing such strict restrictions ?
People are reporting that it's like a cold. Surely you won't be hospitalised if it's just like a cold. You can just stay at home for a few days.
If hospitalisations don't occur then what's the problem ?

Or am I missing something Hmm

maisiedaisy64 · 19/12/2021 08:11

@LadyEloise1 nurse friend informed me it’s 70 times more infectious. So I’m assuming even if it’s not that bad, the fact that so many will get it means that there’ll be a good number of people needing hospitalisation. As like 10% of ten is 1 but 10% of 1000 is 100. That’s what I figure but am totally open to correction!!

Ah LadyEloise even a cursory glance at the media would clear this up for you.

It's apparently more highly transmissible, so more people will get it. While only a small proportion of the people who get it will require hospitalisation, that proportion becomes more and more significant, the higher the numbers testing positive.

In turn this really impacts the health service, both in terms of staffing (as positive numbers rise there) & resources for Covid cases and also the other conditions ICU & HDU are needed for.

The system is under massive pressure, and is now dealing with the fallout from delayed diagnoses since 2020.

Finally, it hasn't been determined it's mild. It's too soon to say that. In fact, the way it was identified in SA was because children & young people were much sicker than usual with other versions of Covid, and one doctor then decided to examine the sequencing.

Thread a naoi:!
I really hope by thead a deich we will be talking about anything but restr restrictions and lockdowns,...

eggandonion · 19/12/2021 09:25

It's looking a bit grim, alright.
Im scared of another lockdown, I think it might tip a lot of people into serious depression and physics health issues.

Ilikepalindromes · 19/12/2021 09:57

I'm unsure why the schools aren't closing Monday to Wednesday.

eggandonion · 19/12/2021 11:46

Possibly because a lot of parents are still working, and a lot of grandparents would provide emergency childcare? A lot of secondary school kids would hang out in supermarkets an fast food places?

thelegohooverer · 19/12/2021 11:58

Hi everyone. Haven’t been on these threads in a while. Hard to believe we’re up to thread a naoi!

My dd’s school sent home all the school books on Friday ar eagla na heagla. I hate this state of uncertainty where no one knows what will happen but don’t trust that the authorities won’t close schools unexpectedly over the weekend!

Spent two hours in the hard shoulder of the N7 this morning to get turned away for a booster. Ah well, it was worth a try. Hopefully I’ll get another chance during the week.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 19/12/2021 12:40

I hope you get yours soon, lego.
I got mine at City Hall, Cork, early this morning.
I queued for an hour, but the line moved quickly.

I would like to see classrooms equipped with HEPA filters before schools go back in January and all staff to have FFP2 masks, but there's little chance of that happening.

TheVeryThing · 19/12/2021 12:47

Agree re HEPA filters and ffp2 masks. I can’t bear to think of schools not reopening in January, but I don’t think anything can be ruled out.
Glad people are getting boosters & looking forward to getting mine on Wednesday. They have been very slow in rolling them out, though. I don’t think I know anyone who got a text from the HSE.

LadyEloise1 · 19/12/2021 13:04

@thelegohooverer
You spent two hours queueing for a booster yet Micheál M said we weren't turning up for our appointments. Angry
There is a glitch re notifications for appointments but nobody is admitting it.

Was it you who had hassle from the guards during lockdown when a priest insisted you attend a religious service for your dd ?

chartreue · 19/12/2021 14:07

I was on the HSE website this morning, only 2 centres in Dublin available for walk ins today, pharmacies all booked out, I've been checking since last week. Luckily for me I got a text from our GPs surgery an hour ago offering me an appointment on Wednesday.

We're spending €50 a week on antigen tests. If the government want them to be used regularly they really need to do something about the cost, especially at this time of year when we are all haemorrhaging money. I'm sure a lot of families just don't have the extra cash to spend on antigen tests.

eggandonion · 19/12/2021 15:08

Cork City's Hall apparently not too bad now in terms of waiting time. The staff are very nice and very efficient, but the appointments system didn't work for about 10 days

eggandonion · 19/12/2021 15:20

@halfpasteleven, enjoy dinner. I had coffee and a bun a couple of days ago, just because I could.

Joolsin · 19/12/2021 17:24

@chartreue - antigen tests were €2.50 each in Dunnes today, much better price than only a few weeks ago. I got some for the teens' stockings, they'll be amused (and will get use out of them too)

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 19/12/2021 17:32

Thank you so much for the new thread @JaneJeffer, I love the thread title! Now remember folks, 2 weeks to flatten the curve...

I hope you have a lovely meal out @halfpasteleven

My DH got a text this morning from HSE booster appointment for Tuesday hopefully mine will come soon too

eggandonion · 19/12/2021 18:00

If there is lockdown I will need to flatten my curves. I eat my way through.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 19/12/2021 19:27

Ha ha ha Grin

I know. I went on a curve-flattening exercise last June. I don't want to go through it again!

True.

I'm mid 50's and it was 6 months since my second jab last Tuesday but I haven't heard anything from the HSE. So, I went o the City Hall around lunchtime today and got my booster. Pretty busy but in and out in 40 minutes. Arm's a bit sore now.
