Thank you both. I will get the workbook and work through some of it with him. We have to self isolate for the next 10 days so if I can get quick delivery we'll have plenty of time to start it.

Summernamechange2021 · 05/08/2021 07:15

Would anyone actually know what should happen here?
Me and the kids were close contacts at the weekend and all have to self isolate for 10 days. Im WFH and now have no childcare for the kids. Am I allowed to take time off work for this?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 05/08/2021 10:31

I don't know @Summernamechange2021, sorry, but just to say if you've been vaccinated you don't have to isolate at all only if you yourself have symptoms. That's no help to you re. childcare though. How old are your children? Could you explain the situation to work and try do as much as possible with them at home or are they so little they need direct supervision? It's a nightmare to deal with I'm sure.

Summernamechange2021 · 05/08/2021 14:49

Thanks @LifeInAHamsterWheel
I only had one vaccine so far so I do have to isolate aswell Sad. I was due to get the second vaccine yesterday but had to cancel and get tested instead. I have a sore throat and cough but the kids seem to be fine.

DC are 7 (with asd) and 2.
2yo is fairly independent and we have open plan rooms so I can work while he plays in the same room, but cant guarantee he'll be quiet for my work calls.

I just spoke to my boss and explained the situation. Hes getting others to help with my workload and said not to worry about background noise in calls so I'll continue to work like that and see how it goes. Its our busiest time of year at work too and were down staff members who are sick so its terrible timing.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 06/08/2021 14:22

With a sore throat and cough maybe you should be on sick leave? Both are covid symptoms, eek! I hope you're feeling better soon Flowers

Iblinkedandiamold · 06/08/2021 18:34

Oh indoor dining, I missed you. Was only a tea and a scone but still, it was inside.
Also got my money sorted. Getting paid next week. Thank God that's sorted.

trappistkepler · 06/08/2021 23:39

Anyone wondering what age groups the 1000+ cases a day are coming from? They used to announce this diligently months ago but now for weeks no information. You would think it would serve the vaccine drive better if they said x% of positives come from under 30's just as an example. So the lack of detail suggests something else perhaps?

Iblinkedandiamold · 07/08/2021 11:10

The lack of detail is very suspicious. Why don't they tell us how many of the cases were full vaccinated, partly vaccinated or not vaccinated at all. Although it's hospital cases I'm more concerned about as people want to travel, more people are getting tested and the cases will go up I suppose. Asymptomatic people are probably testing positive driving the numbers up.

Summernamechange2021 · 07/08/2021 11:17

Our tests came back negative @LifeInAHamsterWheel so we are ok for now thank god.

@trappistkepler about 2 weeks ago I heard on the news on the radio that a third of cases are under 18s.
My bil is double vaccinated and got a positive this week, but the person who rang him from the hse said this is really rare based on the positives she is seeing, most are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.
Although a colleagues wife also double vaccinated got it two weeks ago and had zero symptoms.
Neither seemed to pass it on to anyone though. All their close contacts came back negative.

Glad you got sorted @Iblinkedandiamold

LadyEloise1 · 08/08/2021 08:22

Delighted for Kellie Harrington, her family and friends though I dislike boxing.

Iblinkedandiamold · 08/08/2021 10:01

She's amazing. I missed the all of the Olympics this year. I have no live TV. I love
Watching gymnastics, diving and running.

CliffsofMohair · 08/08/2021 10:27

It’s on the player @Iblinkedandiamold (for next time)

Iblinkedandiamold · 08/08/2021 10:30

Oh the player, the bain of my life. I tried to watch Aoife O'Rourke's fight life. Never again. The buffering and I have great WiFi. Virgin media never gives me trouble at all.

Iblinkedandiamold · 08/08/2021 21:02

I am addicted to life below deck. I get really tired and headachey the first two days of my period so wasn't up to doing much the last few days except watch TV. The weather was absolutely awful yesterday anyway so nothing much to do. I am now starting season 3 of it.

@Summernamechange2021

Does anyone know what books they use in primary school for Irish these days? My DS is going into second class and I'd like to get a book to go through a bit with him at home but they dont use books in his school so I'm clueless. Hes struggling a little in it and I dont want him to end up falling behind and hating it.
I'm late seeing this but yeah, Bua na Cainte is widely used. This link for free downloads was working before (this is from the official Edco site, not a torrent). downloads.edco.ie/bua Be aware that these programmes are entirely in Irish as that's the recommended approach.

I wouldn't get the 2nd class book personally, I'd do 1st. That way, if the school use Bua you're revising things he might have done before l and the 2nd class work will be fresh for him. Of course if they're on Abair Liom or whatever, crack on.

I'd also do things to build up his vocab. Label things in one room of the house, use lots of informal Irish with him (real basics like "ba mhaith liom _", "cen aois thu" - jellies or stickers could be a good reward for practice). Go over colours, days of the week etc or any theme like food, body parts etc. The vocab makes a big difference.

And sure look, I say this a week after your post so if you have the 2nd class book no worries. Personally I'd spend more time focusing on the "cen aois thu" "cad is ainm duit" sort of questions and general vocab than getting through the book and online lessons. The books aren't bad but sometimes they're a bit...filler-y.

And watch out for bloody Samar in the online lessons. I refuse to play anything he appears in...it's so obviously an Irish person putting on a terrible racial parody of an accent, it's very uncomfortable to listen to. I sometimes think I should set woke Twitter on Bua for it. Grin

Iblinkedandiamold · 14/08/2021 20:33

Delighted for Mayo. That was a battle and a half. Football

HonMayo · 14/08/2021 20:54

I nearly had a heart attack.

Iblinkedandiamold · 14/08/2021 20:58

Me too.

Iblinkedandiamold · 14/08/2021 21:37

Thank God the Goalie got to take the kick again. Grin

eggandonion · 15/08/2021 23:07

Most of the population supports Mayo now!

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/08/2021 18:49

Fed up of this weather now. Might as well be back at work. Can't understand why it has to be so hot you can't move or raining in Ireland.
I want nice weather where you can wear your shorts and t-shirt and be comfortable going for a walk.
Shouldn't be surprised it's the same every year.

Summernamechange2021 · 16/08/2021 20:53

Will you be back to work in another week.or two @Iblinkedandiamold?

My DS is back to school next week! I can hardly believe it. It came around so fast. And my god the cost of sending a kid back to school is so high Shock

Was at the doctor today and have a virus with lots of symptoms of covid - but its not covid! Have had 2 negative tests and the doctor still kept asking 'are you sure its not covid?'. I was a close contact 2 weeks ago, but had my 2 tests 10 days apart which both came back negative, the latest on Friday.
