sarahtrue I have travelled a lot as well and I meet more non Irish than Irish when I travel but we are a small country! I think it is recognised that as a % of total population more of us migrate.

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 21:02

FinallyFluid Where is your DH from and where did ye end up? That's another sector we seem to be brilliant at - IT.

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 21:04

Yes, for such a small little nation, we do manage to get around! We're the tarts of Europe lol.

That's it, for our population, it's quite unbelievable that you can't go anywhere without coming across someone Irish.
ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 21:08

The one thing that holds true though, there is no-one as Irish as the Irish abroad. You really do tend to be fiercely loyal to your country and heritage.

The other nationalities who seems vaguely similar to us (from Europe) would be the Italians and the Greek. Both have a history of emigration too (for different reasons to us maybe). They preserve their identities when abroad.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 03/04/2021 21:08

One thing is sure.

We are rapidly rapidly running out of thread!

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 21:10

Most people moving to the UK now would be doing so because of work. Not going to go work on minimum wage but because of the opportunity or salary. Well that's it really isn't it. Even though we're now relatively prosperous and no-one is forced into emigration out of starvation, we still seem to emigrate a lot.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/04/2021 21:11

We are indeed @IsFuzzyBeagMise do you want to start the next one? (I never feel comfortable starting one!)

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 21:12

Oh dear, don't let me lose you all when I've only just found you (unless you want to hide from me). I'd love to follow a new thread. It can be hard sometimes to feel 'at home' on some discussions, but I've felt like I can be me here.

I don't know how to do the link thingy, Life...
Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2021 21:22

Another thread. Oh my gosh what is this? No.7? Wow

IwishIwasontheN17 · 03/04/2021 21:22

It also makes for a big divide between those Irish who emigrated in the 50s/80s who may have not had the opportunities available to the more recent emigrants. More recent emigrants are less likely to access the traditional support structures such as Irish Centres.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/04/2021 21:33

Ok I hope this has worked new thread

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 03/04/2021 21:37

Could the last person on this thread turn off the immersion, please?!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/04/2021 21:43

Jesus don't leave the immersion on whatever you do!! Grin

LadyEloise · 04/04/2021 10:16

Please don't tell me those women who went to Dubai for boob jobs and refused to quarantine are getting free legal aid to fight their case ?
They don't want to quarantine ( or be jailed ) as their children need minding.
Who minded their children when they were away ?

Sarahtrue · 04/04/2021 11:03

The mandatory Quarantine is kind of ridiculous. Ireland haven't put any EU countries on the quarantine list, even thought France and Germany have some of the highest cases in the world.

Hmmmmm

geekaMaxima · 04/04/2021 12:37

Not true - Austria is on the list.

There is some quibbling about the feasibility of including France and Germany alright. Poland and Czechia are far worse per 100k though.

Sarahtrue · 04/04/2021 12:54

I correct what I said. They have put one country from the EU on the list.

My point is the same. They are letting people in from the countries with really high numbers, eg France, Germany and Spain, Italy and Poland. People coming from there do not have to do the mandatory quarantine in hotels. All of those countries have way more cases than Austria. How does it make sense? At all. It seems to me like they are scared to upset germany - who we get money from. And that the Irish government don't want to stop people coming from the countries that spend money in Ireland. I just think it is a shambles !

halfpasteleven · 04/04/2021 22:51

And that the Irish government don't want to stop people coming from the countries that spend money in Ireland. I just think it is a shambles!

It's definitely a political decision. I cannot see why they are standing over it.
