Did you all see the study that said that Ireland has had the third strictest lockdown in the whole world?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 03/04/2021 20:25
Yes Grin

Mehole reminds me of a headmaster who could never control a school so he introduces ever harsher measures until finally a few 5th years try to burn the school down. Grin

No, but hopefully we will come out of it soon if people stop being eejits
ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 20:29

Any Irish I know in the UK are engineers, project managers (civil engineering usually), doctors or otherwise in very senior roles. A far cry from us being the stereotypical drunk (apart from me - I'm keeping that stereotype alive - it's a one woman struggle but I do my best).

Sarahtrue · 03/04/2021 20:29

@ismiseeire but you could say - they had to go to the UK to make the money. So the UK helped them along.

True! We've always made our fortunes abroad I suppose (still waiting for my turn). Our biggest export usually is our people. We educate them and off they go. Out of 3 in my family, 2 live abroad. Better opportunities recently with the Googles and Amazons setting up in Ireland. Irish people don't limit their field of vision to Ireland. We are a very exploratory and ambitious breed.

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 20:39

The British are far less likely to emigrate than the Irish. In the past, the Irish had no choice, but now, even though we don't have to, we seem to still have the grá for voyaging across the sea or ocean. Is it a mixture of the Celtic and Viking heritage? Go forth and multiply! We appear as a nation to be less risk averse than other nationalities when it comes to emigration. I suppose that it stands to reason, that we would earn a lot compared to others. A lot are highly educated.

It's like Tommy Tiernan saying that we tend to land somewhere with nothing but a phone number lol.

Sarahtrue · 03/04/2021 20:42

@ismiseeire you seem very set on nationality. I disagree with you. I don't think that we are from one country. I think that we are from the world.

Sarahtrue · 03/04/2021 20:43

Many people have parents from different countries, and we live all over the world. We are global citizens. I am from Ireland originally. I am in my thirties and I have lived in about ten different countries now.

Not sure what you mean by that? You're agreeing with me I think while disagreeing? As I said, we don't limit ourselves to just Ireland. Nowhere is safe from us! Grin

Well that's sort of my point lol. We do as a nation appear to travel!
ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 20:47

I think perhaps that all of us have people in our families who have emigrated, so it's not as daunting to us. It's something we've grown up with.

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 20:50

It was called 'the brain drain' when I was doing my Leaving. Exporting all our highly educated people.

Sarahtrue · 03/04/2021 20:52

@ismiseeire well I don't think that the Irish travel anymore than anyone else. Most recently I was in Mexico, for six months. I only met one other Irish woman in that time, I met many, many English, French, Norwegian and German people. You just seem to be saying that the Irish are a bit better than everyone else, which is silly. We are all global people. I wouldnt really see myself as "Irish". Yes, I have ties to the country, and I love the country, but I love the whole world. I think the idea of nationality is divisive. I met a French man in Mexico recently. and he said to me that he doesn't want to be known as "French " either.

I think that More and more people are seeing themselves as global citizens.

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 20:52

Ireland is small and I believe that when faced with limited opportunities, we don't think twice about going abroad. Other nationalies are far less likely to seek opportunity elsewhere. Just my observation. Open to debating it!

Oh God. For a minute there I thought I was on AIBU. This is craicnet. It's for Irish people. Of course I'm only discussing Irish people as that's the only thing that I have experience of being.

libertyonhertravels · 03/04/2021 20:54

The Irish Embassy in NZ has done a mapping exercise of Irish in NZ and one of the findings was that Irish people here earn significantly above the national average. That said, a fair few surveyed didn't state their income so it could be overstated.

this is the report

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 20:55

I am Irish and furiously proud of it.

Sarahtrue · 03/04/2021 20:57

I don't agree. I have travelled alot. And I have met more people from other countries traveling, than I have met people from Ireland. There are always loads of dutch, german, scandinavian people traveling.

Anyway it doesnt really matter.

The point I wanted to make is that we are all global citizens. I feel that the idea of "nationality" was used to divide us. We are not just from one country. We are from the world.

FinallyFluid · 03/04/2021 21:00
Well my DH is married to an Irish woman does that count ?? Grin

About twenty five years ago, I genuinely threatened to leave him if he didn't get out of his comfort zone and go where he was appreciated.

He did and he is on 25% more than the software consultants he left behind.

So not quite in tune with the article, but I will take it. Grin

ismiseeire · 03/04/2021 21:00

libertyonhertravels That's a long report and it's not coming up big enough on my screen. Interesting that we're also successful in NZ.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/04/2021 21:01

I couldn't agree less @Sarahtrue I think nationality is part of what makes people unique. There's nothing unique about being a world citizen that's just like saying I'm human - we're all human! I'm Irish through and through. I've lived in 2 other countries but returned home to have our children here. I think Irish people might not travel so much maybe but they certainly relocate (I mean to live rather than just travel)

CherryValanc · 03/04/2021 21:01
Most people moving to the UK now would be doing so because of work. Not going to go work on minimum wage but because of the opportunity or salary.

Not to put a downer on the glee!
