Who thought that would ever happen!!? Has there even been a sixth page before?

OP posts:

The weather's shocking alright. Whatever happened to the whole 'March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb' thing.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/03/2021 16:25

We seem to have time-traveled back to November.

Grin Iwish

FraterculaArctica · 28/03/2021 16:32

Thanks for the welcome. I've started a couple of threads previously but I more want people to chat to than advice - I realise no one knows what the situation will be! We have no friends or family in Ireland, moving for work. I would massively prefer to research areas (round Cork) but my job may just insist we relocate. Currently have places held for September for kids (7 and 4) in 2 schools, so we have some ideas. Agree that moving in summer would probably be better for general feel good factor as well as schools. Just such a wrench leaving all our friends here when it's so difficult to make new friends with all the restrictions.

FinallyFluid · 28/03/2021 16:34

Not looking good for the bould Michael Cullen.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/03/2021 16:39

Wishing you well, FraterCula. Moving countries is difficult and especially at the moment.
I agree with others that it would be easier in the summer. Winter is bleak. We're getting a reminder with the shite weather we have today Smile
Cork is a nice place to live (biased!)

LadyEloise · 28/03/2021 16:58

Not getting the weather comments.
I'm in Dublin, it's lovely and warm and it's windy. It's trying to rain - you know those pathetic little showers that last a few minutes but you're not actually wet if caught in them - sun showers.
Though the forecast is bad.

Anyone know anybody caught up in the Ulster bank tracker mortgage scandal ?
Just awful to think people lost their homes and the consequences of that when bank officials illegally put people out of their homes.
I'm sure families split, perhaps there were suicides. Heartbreaking Sad
Once again what consequences were there for the instigators in the bank ?
What sanctions ?
Probably none.

Iblinkedandiamold · 28/03/2021 17:00

@LadyEloise lucky you. It's very windy and rainy here like winter.

Taytocrisps · 28/03/2021 17:01

Welcome Fratercula. Are you moving to Cork city or elsewhere in the county? You don't have to be too specific. I think there are a few Corkonians on the thread. Cork is a big county and West Cork has really stunning scenery - lots of picturesque seaside towns. I agree that it's very hard to move to a new country when the restrictions make it so hard to get to know people. And it's even harder when you don't have family or friends here already to make the transition easier. I can't help with questions that are specifically about Cork but if you've any questions about life in Ireland generally, I'd be happy to answer them. You must have a million questions and it's easier to ask people who have direct knowledge.

eggandonion · 28/03/2021 17:02

I'm old and slow on the uptake...is the job likely to be Cork based as opposed to Cork being your preferred option?
We moved to Cork 25years ago, I think dh had spent 5 days in total here! It's very strange doing that. But if you can be a bit more specific about geography we will advise you on nice spas, cafes, and similar stuff.
The Beacon CEO owns a chunk of the hospital so he will be ok even if he steps down.

FraterculaArctica · 28/03/2021 17:25

Yes working in Cork city - starting almost straight away though working remotely in the first instance. When I accepted we agreed we'd relocate in summer but that was before this endless lockdown. Looking to live maybe somewhere to the south of the city near the airport, or possibly out towards Midleton, or maybe Douglas/Rochestown but that's more pricey. Can't work out if we'd like to live rurally or not!

ShteakandShpuds · 28/03/2021 17:26

We moved to West Cork in 2015 after selling up in the U.K. and booking a holiday cottage to see what happens... Didn’t know a soul but had enjoyed a few holidays.

We’re still here and loving it and very happy not to be stuck in our old house in the U.K. during Covid. That would have been dire!!!

The weather was so lovely and warm the other week. Confused

LadyEloise · 28/03/2021 17:29
Blush I spoke too soon. Raining heavily enough now.
FinallyFluid · 28/03/2021 17:30

Oh Michael Cullen will alway be ok.

eggandonion · 28/03/2021 17:45

Kinsale is handy for the airport, but very expensive and the population seems older?
Carrigaline is the next town to Douglas and Rochestown, and Al's very handy for the airport, it has some little satellites like Ballygarvan and Minane Bridge which are more rural. Passage West is beside Rochestown, and Monkstown which is where my daughter reckons is up and coming. It,and Crosshaven are both good for sailing.
What part of the uk are you in?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/03/2021 17:45

You have a few options as the road network around Cork is good. Traffic can be brutal at certain times of day. I'm south of Cork City. I'm happy to pm you if you like Smile
IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/03/2021 17:49

Good round-up there by Egg. Crosshaven is the furthest point from the city and would be at most forty minutes away, all going smoothly with traffic.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/03/2021 17:53

Or 30 minutes, even.

Apileofballyhoo · 28/03/2021 17:54

Regarding the weather - sunny south east my hole, today, anyway! I was going to say to Fratercula Cork is desperate for rain. West Cork is beautiful but the rain. Maybe east Cork gets better weather? Maybe I'm just a bit bleurgh today.

eggandonion · 28/03/2021 17:59

There's also all those places like Grange and the one above the roundabout, which I can't spell, lenaghmore? Or out west is Bishopstown and Ballincollig.
Its very wet today, but it was ok for a couple of weeks.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/03/2021 18:01

We do get a lot of rain.

Dunnesstores · 28/03/2021 18:24

Ugh the weather is atrocious this last few days, I'm so fed up now. It's worse this time of year as you expect it to start easing into spring.
At least during winter there's the distraction of Christmas and its it's a novelty snuggling down in front of the fire with lamps on. Then there's planning summer holidays after to keep us dreaming.
This evening it's still bright but miserable out so it just doesn't seem as cosy. It's all about the optics I suppose. Any holidays we look at are for next year although we're hoping we'll get a short city break late in the year still.

Lucent · 28/03/2021 18:40

It was raining so hard that our regular trip around both sets of parents — which usually involves us standing at the gates and them at their front doors— involved us parking and shouting across the road at my parents, after the damn umbrella blew away when we were talking to DH’s parents from the gate. And even then we had to chase their wheelie bin.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/03/2021 19:18

The Beacon CEO owns a chunk of the hospital so he will be ok even if he steps down. Financially yes.
Ye know "It's the shame" his name and legacy will be tarnished by cronyism like many before him.
He may or may not care what people think, the mud is slung.
@LadyEloise I agree the consequences of the tracker fiasco can't be measured.
A bit like the cervical cancer fiasco, dear Lord has the normal Joe soap any luck against powerful professionals.

LadyEloise · 28/03/2021 19:36

Trust me Emeraldshamrock they don't care.

FraterculaArctica · 28/03/2021 19:45

Weather is pretty awful here in the east of England too today. No rain but really cold. Funnily though, "desperate for rain" here is what we'd say when there's a drought, not too much of the stuff! I must learn that...

@IsFuzzyBeagMise would be lovely to hear from you by PM.

Don't think we want to live on the coast itself in the teeth of the gales. A bit inland I'm thinking. What's Innishannon like?
