It feels like we are dragging ourselves into the 21st century. If there is a yes vote at least cases like the X case will (hopefully) not happen again.

I feel a relieved that, at last, the wishes of the women involved will be taken into account.

I remember that case; it was dreadful. The father was in London when he was served by phone; if he had said “You are too late” nobody would have been any the wiser. The fact is that men and women and families come and go between both parts of Ireland by the plane- and boat- and car-load and nobody asks why.

The CTA will not be dropped, far too important politically.

I take heart from conversations with my Mum and her sisters (mid to late 60s). None of them like 'the idea' of abortion but all of them agreed that it wasn't their place to tell another woman what to do and they couldn't judge someone else's decision as to what would be right for them. All will vote for Repeal.

I haven't tackled my father yet but to my great surprise he voted yes to SSM, so perhaps there is hope there too (I know the two issues aren't equivalent but I was surprised he was so open minded on SSM).

I think the GFA will far surpass the CTA (which has little to do with trade within the EU). It's the economy, stupid. Which is a slight variation on what was actually said, but involved, health care, certainly at the hub of this referendum.

My mum, who is a Catholic, believes that a woman should decide what happens to her body, she birthed 8 children.

Damn I can't get the link to work.

Apologies.

One last thing. I think regarding SSM, most of it is anti DUP sentiment because they are incredibly unpleasant when it comes to this issue - this may have swung voters.

What got me was the enforced C section of a young immigrant who was raped in her own country but refused an abortion despite being clinically diagnosed as suicidal. Her baby was delivered at 24 weeks and then taken into care. Horrendous!

Elendon Re SSM: an Irish colleague told me that he thought the result was partly because of people taking the chance to give the Irish RC Church a good kicking after all the scandals. Do you think that came into it and might they do it again?

Elendon · 28/02/2018 09:07

Good point Andrew Certainly my 92 year old mum has her thoughts on the priests in Ireland and they are not pretty considering she is a practising Catholic. Two of her grandchildren, whom she adores, are gay as well.

Also never underestimate the power of social media in all of this as well.

Interesting times we live in.

mikeyssister · 28/02/2018 15:27

Andrew, everyone who I knew who voted yes felt the Roman Catholic church's position was irrelevant and there was no ulterior motive.

In relation to fatal foetal abnormalities surely a 12 week limit will be of no help ?
What choices do those women have ?

TheVeryThing · 10/03/2018 13:14

I don’t think the 12 week limit is going to apply in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.

eloisesparkle · 10/03/2018 18:16

So what will happen ?

TheVeryThing · 11/03/2018 10:54

The proposed legislation hasn’t been published but I think there won’t be a time limit on cases of fatal foetal abnormality or when the woman’s life/health is at risk.

eloisesparkle · 11/03/2018 16:22

Thank you TheVeryThing

MulhuddartDrive, are you still living in the area? (I only ask because we have a local pro-choice group and wondered if you'd like to get involved?)
