Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

A few weeks ago, I withdrew cash from the local Tesco ATM and walked away before the cash was dispensed as I was thinking about something else. Went back two minutes later, but someone had had a lucky day! I hope it made a nice difference.

My in-laws.

Mine too! My DH was helping FIL with something financial and FIL showed DH his current account and it had over £70000 in it - my DH told him that’s a stupid place to have that sort of money, FIL had no savings accounts or anything! DH has now helped FIL to put money in better places and he’s now making money from his money - I hate to think how much he missed out on over the years 🤦‍♀️

In their current account? Someone doesn't sound very money savvy which is odd if they have that amount of money. Must be nice not to have to consider these things.

I had 450k in my account after selling my house, kept it there deliberately as i went round to every single atm in the county, leaving the balance receipt in the machine.... man it felt soooooo gooooood!
😆

As long as someone wasn't standing right behind you, the ATM will have taken the money back in (it only sticks out for a few seconds to prevent just this happening). Check your balance and you might well find it's been paid right back in.

I did (I have previous for doing this) but on this occasion, I was too slow! I am fortunate that losing £50 isn't a catastrophe, but I do hope the person who found the money had a better weekend or free shopping.

To be fair, my grandad has almost that much in his account. His pension piles up quicker than he can spend it, plus other income streams, his ISA is maxed, he has various other investments, and can't be bothered moving money over. So he just leaves it. No biggie.

Oh, we'll be there or thereabouts in a week or two as well. I wince at the dreaded text from the Bank saying 'Your latest transaction has taken you into your agreed overdraft...'

Oh and the lovely 'we know you're already struggling so we're going to charge you every day for the privilege' message..... 🙄🙄

I think its weird that you don't just pick that you don't want a receipt

I think it’s weird that you think I have that option.

You know if you use a straw it makes it easier to suck every last ounce of humour out of things.

I’ll take your word for it.

Shoola · 15/05/2026 18:03

I like to keep that kind of money in my current account as a buffer in case I get carried away at the shops.

I literally put a laughing emoji in the post.

It was next to the comment about how you could do with the 80 grand though. Aaaanyway…

FloorLamp · 15/05/2026 18:21

I found a receipt in an atm once that had about £47k in it...strangely that was also just outside Glasgow and in a Morrisons! 😆

I said I could do with the £398 never mind the £80 grand. If you're going to try and be wide, at least get what I said right. 😄

We have about £300k in our business current account

One of the partners is old school and still likes to check the balance at the cash machine once a week as they think online banking is too risky. I can absolutely imagine them pressing the receipt button and walking off absentmindedly.

SurferRona · 15/05/2026 20:39

@LiquoriceAllsorts2 @ThisHeartyQuoter nah, I pay cleaners and trades (plumbers, gardeners, electrician, odd jobs, dog sitters/walkers, window cleaner) all by direct debit or bank transfer. If anyone required cash from me, I wouldn’t work with them as would suspect that perhaps all not all income was being declared for tax purposes. The window cleaner is £10 a pop, but still bank transfer.

She will only accept cash, I would much rather pay online as it’s a lot easier than going to a cash point. From a tax perspective then I have no idea what she is/isn’t doing - that’s her business.

I had to pay cash when I moved house for the removal people. I actually rarely use cash but there are times you have to

I also used to teach fitness classes and people paid me in cash. That's how most people work in the fitness industry industry particularly if they are teaching in the community and not in gyms - same when I personal trained people. I didn't insist on cash. Most people wanted to pay that way

ChronicProcrastinator · 15/05/2026 22:02

I've had this much and more in my current account. Up to £115k at one point. Not because of any particular event but built up over time by earning a decent amount and spending little.

As my username suggests, I was - and still am - a chronic procrastinator and therefore just put off doing anything with it. I know I should have put it into savings as investments and lost money by doing nothing. I feel bad about that. But have £40k in there now so clearly didn't learn my lesson. I'll use this as a prompt to sort it out again.

There's the psychological aspect too. I don't know how comfortable I'd feel if I could only see a couple of grand in there.

I never thought about that I could well be a business account. Wonder if hes been waiting on a payment coming in to pay wages out.
