Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

In their current account? Someone doesn't sound very money savvy which is odd if they have that amount of money. Must be nice not to have to consider these things.

There are more people than you think who have a decent income but keep a chunk of it in cash on their current account. Definitely several in my family.

People can make a good salary in a field like, I don't know, pharmaceuticals, but lack any kind of basic financial education. They just know that savings account rates are low, so no point, and investments are risky, so no point.

I also imagine there's a good amount of old people with very low outgoings and low engagement with the more specialised banking system in this position.

Nobody, unless they are very rich or have some kind of issue.

HOWEVER, it could just be a case of moving money from one account to another. For instance because a fixed rate has ended and they are switching to a better rate.

These days one can only do this by first transferring the money to a ‘nominated account’. Hence the large balance.

I had 350,000 in my current account, proceeds from a house sale,so it can happen! Only there for 2 days though before shipped off into a high interest account

Freakyfriday777 · 16/05/2026 20:40

Our up the road neighbours bank statement was delivered by accident last week with my post. As have the same bank and I wasn’t paying attention to the names on the letters and opened it. Nearly fell over when I saw there was £38,000 odd in my account… thought I’d had some kind of windfall, then sadly reality came crashing in when I realised 🤣🤣🤣 I did shred it after as it’s really personal info and I’d have been embarrassed my neighbour knowing I’d seen their (very healthy) bank balance.

Borborygmus · 16/05/2026 21:02

Some 30+ years ago I kept a six figure sum in my current account. The reason being that the current account rather bizarrely paid a higher interest rate that any savings account at the time. It was actually rather convenient!

Who pissed on your cereal this morning?!

A chippy weegie

Moparr · 16/05/2026 21:09

You have no idea why they have that kind of money. It may be a life insurance payout, and they would much rather have the person. Not everything is black and white.

Ponderingwindow · 16/05/2026 21:10

Yes, because people want to risk parts of their account info, even the snippets on a receipt, getting out just to make someone envious.

What is the point of mentioning the 250 withdrawal? Stopping at the atm is one of those annoying life chores. If I’m doing it, I’m getting enough cash to last.

MrChesterDrawers · 16/05/2026 21:19

If you know who they are, ask them to get some financial advice. I've got £60k in an Trading 212 ISA, it pays £6 per day (£150 per month) interest.

Before anyone says, I'm also mortgage free with no debt.

My brother and his boy both worked in Rolls Royce in Glasgow as well paid engineers. Same name, same address, and same bank. My brother opened his son's statement by accident, and was shocked to see his 20 something son had £26,000 in the bank. His mum didn't even take dig money off him.
Nice...

Ffs, and what anyone has in their bank account is any of your business how exactly? You didn't have to read it you nosy cu*t. And I seriously doubt anyone with that much in a bank account is remotely bothered with trying to make you jealous. Get over yourself.

Are you annoyed that Reform won a seat near you or something...?

Did you get a good look at the person, or had they gone? Just wondering for a mugger friend?

😂😂😂🤣

Popsicalpop · 17/05/2026 00:01

Could be having an extension done on their house or something and it’s been moved into there from savings account to transfer

Needspaceforlego · 17/05/2026 01:38

So suggestions so far,
Money related to a house sale / purchase
Business account possibly just been paid for a contract etc.
Insurance payment.

Any other ideas?
Note nobody thinks its a normal amount to have in a Personal Current account

Someone who's just had a windfall or inheritance, etc. There are reasons.

Yes, we sold our house and lived in rented for a year before we bought another property. We had a good amount of money but it was for the deposit on the next property.

Well, I see it's still bothering you by the look of it....😄😂

Lol you’re the one that just HAS to get the last word. So think you’re the one still bothered by it love 😘

😄

I’m sitting here laughing at the two of you. I don’t live in the UK, and where I live and do my banking, there isn’t always an option to collect a receipt

I think you both need to get out a bit more and see more of the world, because going through life without venturing further than the ATM at your local mall is obviously pretty limiting.

Jellybelly80 · 17/05/2026 09:00

Sorry I forget to mention checking my balance -

@LoyalMember and @FitAt50 I don’t have to check my balance at the ATM. It’s delivered to my phone each time I use the ATM as well as just after midnight every night. To see it I just have to look at my watch if my phones not to hand.

Its a big world out there.

Can I ask what bank your with that sends you the texts when you use an ATM? My TSB account is useless with this sort of thing!

@FloorLamp hi there. Sorry but I’m not in the UK.

Who keeps £80k in their current account? Confused

Outside of investment accounts etc. my account had the maximum that was protected in it (£85k before the raise) as the rainy day fund. I earn interest but it is there to be spent on day to day bills and unexpected expenses. All other monies are invested.

I don't get that with our TSB account. I do get a text every Friday at about 10am to tell me our balance. It's not always that accurate, though. I've seen it up to nearly £200 higher than what we actually have. I'd rate it at 5 or 6 out of 10 in all honesty because it's just not all that precise.

Sorry, just a bit more about the facility. Within seconds of withdrawing from an ATM or doing an online transaction I receive a message on my phone as well as an email saying there’s been a transaction on the account. So even if I didn’t then receive a daily update just after midnight I’d still know to within a few seconds what my balance was.

hcee19 · 17/05/2026 18:16

Surprise, surprise, but people can have whatever they like in their bank account. That could be to put towards a property they want to buy, what business is it of yours. Many people walk away from an atm not taking their receipt. You are very odd, to even post this....
